Is there something that you just cannot get to grips with, while others find it easy.

For me, I have no sense of direction and cannot read a map or compass.

My family joke that I can get lost in my own house. When I go to a hotel, a toilet in a shopping centre or the like I have to verbalise the route. I say it over and over turn right, turn left etc. if DH is with me I sometimes forget and he watches with amusement as I try to figure out which way to go. SATNAV was the best invention ever for me.

I could never find my way back to a. Terminal or bus station in an unfamiliar place.

Crochet. Yet I can knit anything. Why can't I crochet

I'm the same! Can knit even complicated things like Aran or colour work, but no matter how hard I've tried I just can't get crochet!

My dd2 spent an afternoon making a crochet carrier bag a few years back. She'd taught herself to crochet in the morning!

adorablecat · 27/10/2024 17:31

I have never managed to fold a letter in such a way that the address shows fully in the window of a window envelope.

The temperature.

I just don’t understand what’s classed as hot. I watch the weather forecast but don’t know what the numbers mean at all. I have to ask DH if it’s going to be summer dress with no jacket weather.

I read an aide memoire once that helped me.
2 , 15, 31, winter spring and summer sun .

violentovulation · 27/10/2024 17:34

This is me. I can't read a map or understand/give directions. I have dyscalculia. I didn't realise it was a thing until I was in college.

changedusernameforthis1 · 27/10/2024 17:34

Give directions. I cringe inwardly when someone stops me to ask where such and such is.
I know where it is, I can see it in my head but as soon as I start talking I get it all wrong and stumble over my words. I probably come across as a lost tourist 😂

Pumpkinsandchutney · 27/10/2024 17:39

Front crawl
Crochet
My left and right - daren't teach DS to drive as I have to point where he needs to go as I get flustered and forget which is which! 🫣 Tbf I blame it on being ambidextrous

StrongandNorthern · 27/10/2024 17:42

Knitting.

Arraminta · 27/10/2024 17:44

DH is the only man I know who can get lost following the very latest Sat Nab. He honestly just cannot follow it and gets highly stressed in the process. It's odd because he has excellent spatial awareness and is exceptionally good at maths. But on any new journey we go on we are guaranteed to get lost at least twice.

notmoredirtywashing · 27/10/2024 17:48

Left and right & mental maths for me too.

I really struggle with making a home. On the outside I'm clean and well dressed and people are surprised when they see my house ( I don't encourage visitors) but it's a complete mystery to me how people do it.

I don't live in squalor, but I haven't decorated in 10 years and still have temporary flooring. But the steps ( cleaning, decluttering, painting and finishing a room) are too many steps for me so I don't try.

It really gets me down because I feel like I missed a major part of growing up! ( I'm 64).

violentovulation · 27/10/2024 17:48

Part of the reason I don't drive is because I would end up in a car wreck trying to navigate stuff.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/10/2024 17:55

I can't get to grips with a couple of games. Chess is one and Poker is the other.

I also struggle with wrapping presents , the sellotape sticks to itself and people who can do the twirly ribbon stuff are just amazing !
I watched a friend whizz through that thin ribbon to make lovely bows and tops to their presents
I know mine would look like a dog's dinner if I tried any of that

Yes me to. I once volunteered at a charity wrapping presents then saw the organises putting them to one side. The look of relief when I asked her if she would like me to help in the kitchen was quite comical.

Driving. Just can’t get the hang of it.
Knitting. Shame as I love newborns in hand knitted cardigans and would have loved to knit ones for my DC.
Playing musical instrument of any kind. Really wish I could play guitar.
Curling/waving my hair using tongs or straighteners.., hairdresser has shown me, I’ve watched YouTube tutorials but still looks a mess when I try!
Cartwheels! This used to upset me a lot when I was only 8!

I’m also another one who can’t work lighters.

I’m convinced people who can curl their hair with straighteners are using some form of witchcraft. I try occasionally and know that the trick is to turn away from the face but I get confused about what way that actually is…

I’m pretty sure my quality of life would improve with a Dyson airwrap (as I constantly have frizzy baby hairs which I can’t smooth down because I also can’t blow dry my hair) but I can’t justify the price tag.

Ha ha yes I can relate. I remember DD crying when she was about 6 cos I couldn’t curl her hair with my GHDs. Could never do any good hairstyles on her either.

Which way to unscrew something.

I remember by saying to myself, lefty loosely, righty tightly. But then I need to remember my left and right!

Oceangreyscale · 27/10/2024 18:04

Wine. I've been to a bunch of corporate wine tastings but can't remember a thing. Not a massive life problem admittedly.

Also can't deal with clocks going forward and back and with time zone but hey my smartphone does it for me.

the80sweregreat · 27/10/2024 18:06

My hair only looks ok after I've parted with a lot of money for a pro to style it
Straighteners are definitely witch craft !
Some people just have the knack.

RaspberryWhip · 27/10/2024 18:08

Wind direction. My family all sail and I’ve spent fruitless hours with pizza pictures but I just don’t get it.

Tacking and jibing are a foreign language to me.

I am sure I have read on here and elsewhere that the lack of direction / spatial awareness can be linked to dyspraxia .
I have a hopeless sense of direction . Can be in a shopping centre and walk out of a shop and go back the way I have already been . Don't notice until I see a shop I have already been in Blush.

I can sort of follow Google maps in the car , but get very confused with e.g five lane roundabouts . I quite often have my phone re- routing when I have gone the wrong way . I do frequently swear at it , especially when it proclaims loudly - proceed to the route !!

Can't parallel park even if my life depended on it . Really struggle with reversing and driving any distance . I live in fear of being on narrow roads and not having the right of way and having to reverse back over any distance .
I could take a million driving lessons - but just don't think my brain is wired that way .
Really struggle with Google maps whilst walking - never know which way I should be facing . I only realise that I have gone the wrong way when the travel time increases rather than decreases ....

I use the Strava app, I start it when I start walking. It doesn't help too much with finding a place, but means I can always get back to my car afterwards.

Clicking my fingers. Whistling. Making an omelette.

redtrain123 · 27/10/2024 18:41

Clicking fingers - adds to list.

Also, naturally being well groomed.

Thank you so much for that! That’ll really help 💐

I can't watch someone do something physical and emulate them. Figuring out where my own limbs are in space is completely baffling. I'll think I've got it but then realise I'm doing something completely different.
This made sports a real struggle as a child and means I spend much of my yoga classes laughing at my own ineptitude.

Sortumn · 27/10/2024 19:06

Faceblindness. Change your hair or be somewhere out of context to me and I won't recognise you.
