Is there something that you just cannot get to grips with, while others find it easy.

For me, I have no sense of direction and cannot read a map or compass.

My family joke that I can get lost in my own house. When I go to a hotel, a toilet in a shopping centre or the like I have to verbalise the route. I say it over and over turn right, turn left etc. if DH is with me I sometimes forget and he watches with amusement as I try to figure out which way to go. SATNAV was the best invention ever for me.

I could never find my way back to a. Terminal or bus station in an unfamiliar place.

Crochet. Yet I can knit anything. Why can't I crochet

Also this. I console myself by saying that I don’t like the drape of crochet fabric for garments, which is a bit true. But then I look at toys, those little amigurumi things, and it makes me sad that I can’t make them

the80sweregreat · 27/10/2024 16:52

I said about clingfilm once on mumsnet and was advised to buy a cling film cutter !
I still haven't bought one , but I agree it's a pain to cut and use. Foil is much more user friendly and doesn't go weird when you try to use it.

Freemanhardyandwillis · 27/10/2024 16:52

@Kneidlach I know! I hate it when people say "you know that thing when you drive home on automatic pilot and your brain doesn't even register what you're doing"? No, I don't. There is so much I have to be aware of that I'm hyper alert. I've been driving for 30 years and I hate it as much as the first day. I quite often get migraines after driving from concentrating so hard.

jellybe · 27/10/2024 16:55

Making flapjacks. I'm a relatively good home baker, nothing fancy but can make a good sponge, puff pastry etc. but flapjacks just do not work for me. No idea what I do wrong as follow the same recipe DD uses and hers are always yummy but when I make it they are just wrong.

Howdotheydothis · 27/10/2024 16:56

People. I struggle with people. I would love to understand how people hop from relationship to relationship too.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 27/10/2024 16:58

Driving. I now have a diagnosis of dyspraxia (very late in life) which makes me feel better, though not much. I've always lived in areas where everything is close by but for the past few years I've been looking after my DM in the depths of the country so not being able to drive really matters.

Echobelly · 27/10/2024 16:58

Riding a bike - I did actually learn in my late 20s but then (now) DH was really busy with a project for several months and I had no one to practise with, then we moved in together somewhere with only space for one bike (and as he actually used his, that took priority). I have proved one can forget how to ride a bike because I'm in my late 40s and haven't been able to do it again.

LunaNorth · 27/10/2024 17:02

Left and right. All that business with ‘my left or your left?’ just irritates me. Pick a side, ffs.

Remember details. I can read a history book about a certain event, be fascinated for the duration of the book, close it, and not be able to remember a single damn thing about it.

Understand directions or descriptions of locations in books.

Lace boots or shoes in the way that isn’t criss-crossed.

Parallel park.

Poach eggs.

icebearforpresident · 27/10/2024 17:05

It’s not an issue day to day but I can’t look at a pair of shoes and know which one is left and which one is right. Shoes with buckles, logos etc are fine because they always go in the outside but if I had a pair of plain trainers I can’t do it. I have to put them down on the floor beside each other then switch them over to see which way round has the smallest gap between the toes before I put them on. I hate going I buy trainers in person because if you try them on the assistant hand you a shoe to pit on while they lace the other and I need both shoes to tell what foot it goes on, which at the age of 39 is pretty embarrassing.

I can't work lighters.

Fine with matches or those long pointy sticks for lighting candles but actual lighters?

Nope. My brain does not compute!

Me too. I was handed a lighter to light some candles on a birthday cake at work once and managed to burn my thumbnail. There was a terrible smell of burning keratin which ruined the vibe.

Lytlethings · 27/10/2024 17:07

Definitely the driving, parking and reversing. People who drive with ease I really envy. For me unless I am going in a straight line there is no correlation between the steering wheel and the wheels. Don’t start me on front wheels and back wheels

I can’t tie a bow! Well, I mean, I tie it. But not a proper one. I watch videos, read instructions, and nope. Always turns out weird.

My adult DD can’t tie a bow except by making 2 loops. Parenting fail!

LunaNorth · 27/10/2024 17:08

I can’t whistle with my fingers in my mouth, either.

AwkwardPaws27 · 27/10/2024 17:09

Driving. I passed my test on the first attempt & then didn't drive for about 8 years as I found it so terrifying.
I'm slowly making progress over the last 6 months or so - had a few refresher lessons, comfortable with short local journeys & have driven a few 25 mile journeys via A roads too now - but I wonder how it seems to come naturally to so many other people!

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 27/10/2024 17:10

crochet. I do loads of other crafts but I just cannot master crochet. At all.

Slicing bread - can either cut a 2-inch wodge or else I cut it at crazy angles. I don’t know why it’s beyond me, it can’t be that hard!

Are you left handed? Knives with serrated blades ( like bread knives) are only ground on one side and don't work properly when used in the left hand. It is possible to buy a left handed bread knife!

the80sweregreat · 27/10/2024 17:11

How I remember left and right hands is that my wedding ring is on my left hand !
.. Before I was married ( ages ago ) I did struggle with left and right.
I have to put my shoes the right way round first before I put them on too.
Walking around shoe shops with one shoe on is a strange thing that we've all probably done whilst trying to look as if we have both on! lol
( Michael McIntyre did a funny sketch about it once )

StaunchMomma · 27/10/2024 17:13

My Mum is the same with sense of direction. She once had a meltdown in the car because she insisted that as we had driven North to get somewhere, we needed to continue North to get home 😂 She is in no way an unintelligent woman but honestly, it's like she has a mental block on the issue.

I'm terrible with anything to do with decorating. I watch my friends painting and wallpapering and tiling etc and I would love to do it but I'm just so intimidated by it all. It's seems like magic!

YfenniChristie · 27/10/2024 17:14

I can't use a tin opener. I have tried and tried and it reduces me to tears of frustration every time. I either buy tins with ring pulls or use an electric tin opener. It makes me feel so stupid.

Another thing I can't do which doesn't bother me at all is whistling. Just can't do it.

the80sweregreat · 27/10/2024 17:18

Any kind of tins / packets are hard to open these days I think and bottle tops on milk too!
Maybe it's a strength thing as you age?

CheeseLizard21Blue · 27/10/2024 17:18

Which way to unscrew something.

Again, are you left handed. They work very counter-intuitively for left handers. I have to use traditional types with my hands crossed over but find this type easier.

I also struggle with wrapping presents , the sellotape sticks to itself and people who can do the twirly ribbon stuff are just amazing !
I watched a friend whizz through that thin ribbon to make lovely bows and tops to their presents
I know mine would look like a dog's dinner if I tried any of that

blackpear · 27/10/2024 17:25

Driving automatic cars. Am absolutely fine with manual. Driving a left hand drive. Hate it.
