Help! I’ve bought the world’s smallest chicken

RosieMilkJug · 27/10/2024 09:47

It is labelled as a medium size but is tiny. I have 4 adults to feed tonight.

i need to bulk it out with something so I’m thinking about putting it in a roasting tray with a can of tomatoes, garlic and white beans the roasting the whole lot together. Would the sauce be too greasy?

What else can I do with a chicken to make it go further?

tia

Going to the shops for Yorkshire pudding?! I assume you mean going to the shops for the ingredients to MAKE them!!!

Sidebeforeself · 27/10/2024 13:27

Sorry ..it took me forever to press send on my last message !!!

purplebeansprouts · 27/10/2024 13:28

Already in the oven, nice and hot, oh damn, guess what I forgot ... Yorkshire pudding!

@RosieMilkJug Nigella has a delicious one pot chicken and orzo. I'd go for that.

This is a great recipe- I usually add 500g pasta and then it doesn’t matter if there’s not much chicken.

CurlewKate · 27/10/2024 13:55

@Supermand I'm not a massive Nigella fan-but I love that one. And her "praised chicken is great as well.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 27/10/2024 13:58

Ahhhh I'm in the mood for a roast now too! It's a rare Sunday where we're not having one! 😭

I've got chicken on the menu for next Sunday but it's Diana Henry's stuffed Greek chicken with Feta and orzo. Never tried it before but have been meaning to make it for probably a year by now; better be good after all the anticipation!

Never heard of Aunt Bessie's 🙄

coxesorangepippin · 27/10/2024 14:01

Go. Out. Now.

No more MN for you.

Cardinal sin? Not buying a Chicken to last 17 meals.

Important question : will you be making stock???

Peak MN

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 27/10/2024 14:05

Eh it's not quite peak - it's just a one pot meal.

I'm not even sure I'll like it because I don't usually like cooked feta but for some reason it's really appealed to me right from the time I first read the recipe.

Hartleyhare1206 · 27/10/2024 14:06

I reckon that chickens big enough to feed four people every day for a week….just serve it with massive salads 😁😜😜😜😁

Mindymomo · 27/10/2024 14:12

I often get chicken delivered that is small, fortunately I’m not fussed on chicken, so go without, don’t forget there is chicken on the underside as well as the legs, that can be picked out. Come clean with your guests that the chicken isn’t the largest, and make extra potatoes and veg.

Lorrymum · 27/10/2024 14:28

No suggestions but reminds me of the time I bought the World's biggest chicken mistakenly thinking it was a turkey.
My first time cooking Christmas dinner and it was tough as old boots.

Sidebeforeself · 27/10/2024 14:31

@x2boys Never heard of a joke 🙄

Breadcat24 · 27/10/2024 14:47

scaled back yorkshire recipe -always works though I do not serve with chicken
300ml milk, 200g plain flour, 3 eggs - season cook in muffin trays with a small amount of hot oil

I would not do the bean thing but I would do a lot of mixed roasted veg dependant on what you have in- potatoes, carrots, parsnips, beetroot, red onion
do a hefty side dish like cauliflower cheese and some green veg

I am sure you will have enough

Thank you! Yea, I do have some orzo.

And it’s 1.3kg.

I think it'll be just fine!

As you have the part baked bread definitely do those too. That way you don't have to stress. Hope you enjoy it!

I don’t have feta but I’ve got some halloumi….?

OP posts:
AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 27/10/2024 14:54

I don't think halloumi would work. Nigella's sounds nice so I'd go with that.

RosieMilkJug · 27/10/2024 17:03

Nigella’s chicken with orzo is in the oven. I have lots of sugar snap peas and I’ve found some garlic bread in the freezer. And I’m now making the world’s strongest cocktails (side car) so hopefully everyone will be too sloshed to care! Yes it’s half term. Yea we have the day off tomorrow.

Thanks for your suggestions and I’ll trawl back and thank the PP who suggested this recipe.

RosieMilkJug · 27/10/2024 20:59

Well, that was a great success. Next time I might take off the skin half way through the cooking and try and scoop out some of the fat so that it isn’t quite so rich. But we had plenty to go round and it was very filling. And minimal washing up. Result!
