Obviously I hope for cures for incurable diseases, access to food, clean water and sanitation for all, world peace etc, but aside from that I would love to see:

  1. Discovery of extraterrestrial life (bonus if it's sentient)

  2. Drugs/treatments to increase cat life expectancy to at least 60 years (most important)

End to global warming

End to Western countries using developing countries as sweat shops for cheap tat at premium prices

An end to people smuggling

End to relations with countries committing atrocities ie leadership with a backbone

Xyz1234567 · 26/10/2024 19:31

Assisted dying.

MyStylish40s · 26/10/2024 19:32

A cure for cancer

Berga · 26/10/2024 19:34

Agree with @Xyz1234567 , assisted dying.

I would also like to see universal basic income and a four day working week.

Access to education for all including degree, without extortionate loans.

Cure for dementia.

Swimsetandpearls · 26/10/2024 20:23

World peace blah blah…

• Roll out of self driving vehicles for those who need them (elderly, infirm, people studying/working etc)
• rain and friction activated energy capture to massively reduce energy costs.

Echobelly · 26/10/2024 20:30

Cure for various forms of dementia - one of my parents having dementia is one of my biggest fears

A technology that could reverse global warming and maintain healthy global temperatures - right now I think it's our only hope of the world not being in an appaling mess of water shortage, mass desertification and flooding all the issues that will bring

Like @Swimsetandpearls - self driving vehicles, esp for elderly and disabled people, it could be a real game changer for them. The technology is basically there - the issue is legislation for it and what to do when you have to have both human and automated driving on the same roads

Also agree with Universal Basic Income @Berga - will never happen though as it's entirely against the demands of Late Stage Capitalism which wants people desperate and accepting of the worst pay and work conditions to make more money for the richest.

Cure for Alzheimer’s

Self driving cars

Completely self sufficient farming to end all famine and make food (well vegetarian food anyway) essentially free

LaPalmaLlama · 26/10/2024 20:36

I do believe we will solve climate change in that I think technologies will advance to beyond net zero so we’ll actually be able to reduce carbon in the atmosphere by the end of this century. I know that’s an outlier position but I think the last 5 years has seen a step change in attitudes.

id actually be slightly contrarian to the OP re whether we want to increase life expectancy further by curing the big killers. If it comes with an increase in productive life, then sure, but the last thing humanity needs is people stopping work at 70 and living to be 120. That would cause more misery than the status quo. I think 85 is fine if I’m honest. Efforts should focus on QOL before that.

@LaPalmaLlama I agree and was being somewhat tongue-in-cheek in my OP! It would be lovely if we could all make it to the present average life expectancy in reasonably good health, though. And in a world without childhood cancers or similarly debilitating diseases.

yes, agreed- the dream is 85 years of great health and then die in your sleep. We need to get the boffins on it!! 🤣

Self-making beds.
Personal mini drones for selfies and videos.
The cyst/spot on my chin to finally disappear for good after many many years of repeated appearances.

The 2nd one is less of a hope and an expectation. Can't be far off it at all.
