What can I do for free today?

I'm on my own today and tomorrow, everything around here costs money. Even going for a walk somewhere nice costs money because all the parks and coastline has pay and display machines. I need to save money but I also need to get out so what can I possibly do?

Where do you live?

Do some amateur nature photography? Go to the library with a flask of coffee, find a good book and read it in a cosy corner? Set yourself a challenge to walk X miles (take some water and a mini picnic from home).

If you can drive, just go a few miles and park for free in a village. Try and find a circular walk with woods. Look for free events like talks and leaf walks.

Why not find street parking a bit further away and park there and just lengthen your walk?

Library, free art gallery or try googling in your local area for events happening at churches, community centres etc - often there will be stuff on for free.

Ragwort · 26/10/2024 10:07

Obviously it depends where you live but I am going to a free concert today, I could go for a walk (from home - no parking costs) visit a free gallery or exhibition. Visit a church etc. I often volunteer on Saturdays as it's meeting people, having fun etc but without spending money ... agree you can't just rock up somewhere and volunteer today but something to plan for the future?

Check your local paper/Face Book for activities.

I should have said, but actually it's more of a general moan that even free stuff costs money now

Thank you for your suggestions, I'm frantically googling as I type

What is the point in posting this if you aren't going to tell us where you are ?

frozendaisy · 26/10/2024 12:17

If you want something truly free just go out close the door walk and see where it takes you.
Go around the local houses and check out Halloween decorations, local church tomorrow, there might be drop in coffee in a public building.

Got any friends near? Can you visit them or suggest you go somewhere and share parking costs?

After a local walk do you have any books in? You can read to escape anywhere then.

Because it's a general rant that "free" things really are anything but

Driving your car isn't free but you can usually park for free if your legs work well

ByMerryKoala · 26/10/2024 12:40

Well there are lots of things around me that I can do for free, a free museum, library, beach (park further out than the paid for parking), ditto parks, forest/ moors, use Tesco vouchers for English Heritage/ national trust. Things like that?

Ragwort · 26/10/2024 16:32

I'm just back from the free concert, it was reallly lovely and free lunch, tea and coffee as well! There was an option to manage a donation but it really wasn't necessary. And it's going on until early evening ... I may go back.

I honestly can't emphasise how many 'free community events' there are ... but for whatever reason people seem to assume you have to "pay" for entertainment for it to be any good. This event wasn't even well supported which I find really sad .. we live in a fairly small market town but there's things like this going on (maybe not the free lunch!) all the time. Keep an eye out on community notice adds, local press, social media etc.

Try geocaching in your local area.
