So you think @Zonder is lying that she has friends that are farmers who don't share your views??

Well quite. Clearly I can't really know any farmers if they don't agree with Derxa 🤣

I really haven't any more energy to unpick the bollocks Farage spouts, amplified by the Torygraph

Can anyone wiser explain what the reality is here. Because I can't quite bring myself to believe a word Farage says - if he told me his name was Nigel Farage I'd have to confirm it.

I suspect there is a dictionary in Telegraph Towers that wrongly states "reveals" is a synonym for "claims".

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/11/01/reform-banned-discussing-southport-attacker-parliament/

The sub judice rule prevents MPs or Lords from referring to a current or impending court case. Although the House is entitled under parliamentary privilege to discuss any subject, sub judice applies to avoid the House from debating a subject and possibly influencing the legal outcome of a case.Detailed information is set out in the Appendix of the Standing Orders of the

www.parliament.uk/site-information/glossary/sub-judice/#:~:text=The%20sub%20judice%20rule%20prevents,legal%20outcome%20of%20a%20case.

Notonthestairs · 01/11/2024 18:12

@SerendipityJane
I mean obviously Reform must have heard of sub judice.
Otherwise they'd be pretty shit MPs.

I guess they are just hoping their supporters haven't heard of it.

Sorry but can't be bothered to read the DT link either

Lindsey Hoyle was quite clear at PMQs on Wednesday that the new information about Southport attacker terrorism charges could not be discussed under parliamentary privilege

So of course Richard Tice asked Starmer a question

And Starmer delivered a short lawyerly put-down referencing the case being sub judice as per the Speakers advice

Richard Tice just made himself look silly - and attention-seeking too

I’ve always been interested in politics & have said on these various incarnations of threads going back to Westminenders I’m very grateful for posters much more informed than I am, reading articles etc that I may never have come across evaluating views of others that I probably wouldn’t discuss in RL I’m probably much more naturally left leaning than many contributors buts that’s fine we have learnt to get along & the support for other aspects of our lives is very heartening.

itsgettingweird · 01/11/2024 20:40

That's what I love most about these threads - the mutual respect for differing opinions and the discussions around them.

This. I learn so much on these threads that I would have missed otherwise.

I am absolutely flabbergasted by those cat slurs popping up in the other thread. How very dare they!
As people have said we’ve got a few lurkers.I must confess, I was a lurker myself for a spell before I threw my hat in the ring, so let’s hope we see some fresh (friendly) faces around here soon.
But enough about that—today marks the grand occasion when we discover who will be leading the Tories for the next 18 months. Exciting times ahead!

Really? So you don't think that his stating that he bought the farm just to avoid IHT might be part of what has brought this on farmers? That has really annoyed some of the farmers around here.

And I'm sure you know that Labour have still made allowances for farmers in all of this.

Paul Johnson IFS put the farm IHT into perspective, the allowance is very generous, the rate is 20% & a 10year repayment period but most importantly, until 1992, farms didn't even have any exemptions and the dire warnings we are all hearing now never happen.

Plus farmers have 18months to mitigate, through exemption transfer or insurance.

However, i'd like to see the allowance go to £5m and then taper back to 2m over the next 10 years or so.

Same with the NI changes, needs some fine tuning in regard to Care and GP sectors.

No shame in listening to peoples concerns.

It seems Cleverly is lining himself up for the next Tory leadership election since he has distanced himself now from the current pair.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/james-cleverly-kemi-badenoch-financial-times-b2639940.html

A sensible decision to disassociate himself from the upcoming shenanigans.

PickAChew · 02/11/2024 08:16

They're not going to have a very big pool to select a shadow cabinet from.

newnamethanks · 02/11/2024 08:41

Minnows in the shallows. Watching Sunak at PMQs last week I felt something approaching nostalgia as the last remnants of the old Tory party dribble away. What is left behind is deeply unimpressive.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/11/2024 08:49

Anyone any thoughts on the recent poll (heard it mentioned last night on the radio) that the Torys show very slightly ahead. Considering the current state of the Tory party I find this astonishing.

I say 4 - 5 years is a very very long time in politics.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/11/2024 08:55

True - and clearly people have very short memories.

Psychology - get the hard stuff out of the way first.

Llttledrummergirl · 02/11/2024 09:41

It's gbeebies. I don't think anything of it.

prettybird · 02/11/2024 09:52

I am definitely part of the Cat Elite Wink

However, even though I am avowedly left wing, I've not voted Labour (or indeed LibDem) for over 30 years.

Fortunately, where I live, I have an alternate left wing party I can vote for, which aligns with my political principles Grin

I do, however, look forward to a time in the unfortunately too distant future where those political objectives have been achieved, when I can vote for a newly created left wing party - one with the principles that Labour used to have Shock

Agree with this @Alexandra2001

Notonthestairs · 02/11/2024 10:18

Cleverly keeping his hands clean for the next leadership contest makes sense.
Let the sound & fury gobs run out of gas - step in to unify the party.

(As much as the Conservatives can be unified at this point.)

What strikes me about the cat slur posts is the hypocrisy - time and time again those of us who are left leaning get accused of being the nastiest, most unpleasant of people online. Honestly, some people really have a beam the size of a railway sleeper in their eye.

And if 'your cats are average' is the worst thing you can say about these threads and the people who post on them, I'd say we were doing pretty well.

"Clean" hands ?

He is still part of the 2010-2024 Tory party that fucked the UK. "Washed hands" at a stretch. The best he can be is a stabilising influence until a real pair of clean hands - someone who wasn't in government 2010-2024 can bubble up.

Worth remembering that in 2010, Cameron (and even he didn't really win) had that distance from 1992-1997, which was the last time the Tories went postal.

Notonthestairs · 02/11/2024 10:23

It's all relative @SerendipityJane
And I'd say it's about to get a lot muckier.

SerendipityJane · 02/11/2024 10:23

So apart from "Forcing marriages" it seems this budget is bad for everyone.

Using the BBC rule, that suggests it's evenly balanced overall ...
