Does anyone have some earplugs they can spare? The whining on MN is excrutiating. I expect the UK to fall apart by next Monday.

There is a Telegraph article about a couple with 60 buy to let properties whining about the loss of WFA

The amount of moaning from people who will have £500k (if single)/£1m (if a couple), then 60% of anything above that to pass on to their kids is really unedifying.

DuncinToffee · 31/10/2024 13:57

Different issue but definitely one that needs addressing, and not just Mr Athwal,

Yes, I saw that.

It is, isn’t it? So spoilt and entitled.

Willowkins · 31/10/2024 15:06

I did the Sky calculator and this budget will have a negligible affect on me (maybe 50p unless I give up wine completely).
However, my road tax goes up by £190 as a result of a decision by the previous government.
Am I whining? No. (A) Because I'm a grown up and (B) because I'm glad the money is finally going to be spent where it's needed.

SerendipityJane · 31/10/2024 15:10

seems fair enough ...

The budget is going to affect me by £0. I’m not sure that is going to be true because I need to see what happens with bus fares but it seems reasonable.

I think the title at the top is supposed to say MNers reacting to the budget.

InMySpareTime · 31/10/2024 15:23

When did people stop saving for their old age and start expecting to leave millions behind, untaxed, on their deaths?
I've been encouraging my PILs to spend all their money on making their lives easier, nicer, and more enjoyable. They saved for their old age and are now in their 80s. Time for them to reap the benefits of that scrimping.

Not til next Monday?!!!

My fave comment so far today has been it's ok because when the Tory's get back in they'll abolish IHT. I mean they didn't do it the 14 years they were last in but .......

Yes we've just persuaded by 74yo widowed dad to buy a new car and a decent one.

He's got a 2023 Hyundai Tucson hybrid. He's also 6"3 so needs a big car anyway 😂

The money he has is mostly inheritance from his parents (his dad died when my dad was young in the 70's and he got half of the house via will so when his mum went into care home and then died his half of the house wasn't counted).

I can see why they've put a stop to this tbh as most of my inheritance will come down from this and there is an issue of people can Rey on inherited wrath as it doesn't encourage personal responsibility. Something the Tory's apparently value 🤔

Or to be closer to the truth, Torybots that use MN ...

The PS VAT constituencies faith in Human Rights to the Rescue seems slightly at odds with the possibility that the reimagined Tory party they are wishing for look set to pull the UK out of the ECHR at the first blush.

Know this is off piste on todays conversations I have received my PiP renewal letter this morning, finally found the courage to open it they have continued to award me standard rate on both elements which is fine grateful I’m not unwell enough to qualify for the higher rate, but confused about this bit does this mean they won’t make me reapply every year or so like they have been doing for the last few years? Just a bit thrown.

@dontcallmelen no, that's an ongoing award. They don't expect your care needs to materially change and will contact you in 10 years to check.

It means that you are on a 10 year "light touch" review. My DH had a similar award. My DWP friend says it means that you won't have to undergo a full reassessment and that when it does come up for the ten year review, it will very likely just be moved on again for another ten years.

That must be such a weight off your mind.

dontcallmelen · 31/10/2024 16:24

Thank you so much Pandora must admit I’m very relieved & the thought of not having to fill in that bloody complicated & humiliating form is a big weight lifted.

Yes. It’s not quite true that I’m not affected by the budget. I will at some point inherit from both of my divorced parents, including whatever is left of my dad’s pension pot which will now be taxed. Which seems right to me. I can’t be bothered trying to be pissed off on paying tax on that money.

pointythings · 31/10/2024 16:40

I'm so pleased you're on 10 year light touch, @dontcallmelen . My DS got this as well, he's on higher rate for both and none of his conditions are going to get materially better - only worse. It's nice to see they get it right sometimes.
