Navalny

I'm reading Alexei Navalny's posthumously published memoir, 'Patriot'. Apologies if this is being discussed elsewhere here, I couldn't find anything and thought that others here might like to discuss.

The memoir is brilliant; by turns funny, insightful and full of wisdom. It's led to me watching the Oscar-winning documentary 'Navalny' again and seeing him there in the flesh, joking and laughing and being so fucking smart, alongside the memoir, is breaking my heart.

He was genuinely brilliant and should have been a Russian Mandela, released at the end of this shitty, murderous regime and bringing his people to democracy and freedom in the country he loved so much.

Fuck Putin for everything that he's done, not least the murder of Alexei Navalny.

RIP Lyosha, gone far too soon.

I watched that documentary earlier this year and think about Navalny often. An amazing person.

Thank you for replying @ilovetomatoes. I often think of him too. When I read that he had died earlier this year I had that awful feeling of your stomach dropping, which seemed mad for someone I'd never met, but I was gutted. He should have lived to be an old man, he should have led Russia into democracy, he should have lived to see his children become parents. It's all such a waste.

Putin will win.

For the simple reason that the majority of the west are quite happy to sit on their couches, waiting for food to drop into their mouths while searching the internet.

I am very sorry this is going to happen but we are in boiling frog syndrome.

Nobody wants to wake up and smell the coffee. The UK is a bunch of soft, wilting, snowflake shits. From Starmer down to your average - and very mediocre - UK citizen.

TheSongOfNorway · 25/10/2024 21:51

Oh - and don't say not everyone is like that. It doesn't wash because sadly most people are. 90% or more I believe.

MagicFox · 25/10/2024 21:52

I think of him often too, it's wholly depressing

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 25/10/2024 21:54

I couldn’t believe they actually had the nerve to murder him. It’s like the dark ages in Russia, and yes, no one is doing anything except tutting.

RIP courageous man.

notgettinganyyounger · 25/10/2024 21:54

Amazing man. Have watched it 3 times. So incredibly brave to return home knowing the likely outcome.

suburberphobe · 25/10/2024 21:55

His wife is amazing.

Putin is disgusting.

I hope she becomes President eventually. we can but dream

RedWinePoliticsAndHair · 25/10/2024 22:03

She's steely @suburberphobe - I do have faith that she might eventually succeed. We are miles from that yet though, I can't see an end to Putin's regime other than his death. And then what kind of chaos will follow?

@TheSongOfNorway perhaps you're right. I certainly wouldn't have the courage that Navalny had or even a millionth of it. The man was something else and most people don't have that courage or even the courage to fight the status quo. But terrifying dictators and evil regimes have been beaten before.

You may have heard this already, from the Marsh family who did a lot of songs during Covid.

This made me cry. What a beautiful song.
