'hearing voices'

15yo DD says she hears voices. She has a diagnosis of adhd (privately) and I am just wondering is this is part of the condition or I should take this further, to the gp I guess? she says that it's difficult for her to focus in lessons and get homework done. I am not sure how much I should worry about this and I don't want to alarm her if this is part of her condition, but also don't want to miss a more serious mental health issue. Just wondering if your teens have ever reported similar and what you've done about it.

Get her to a doctor and let them speak with her. Is it her own internal monologue she's hearing or is it different voices like they're coming from another room? ADHD goes hand in hand with anxiety which causes racing thoughts and it may be that that's become louder, is she sitting her exams this year?

Definitely not part of the condition. I would ask for help from GP as soon as possible as this could be a sign of something more complicated. I would write a diary of what and when with this too and take to GP.

Have you asked her for more information? Are the voices part of her expressing her fears, things she's worried she needs to do or are they external? Is she bothered by them? The fact she's told you suggests she is and she needs support to deal with them.

Here's a MH charity page explaining hearing voices.

Is she on any meds for ADHD? I have read of these causing auditory hallucinations so might need tweaking.

What are the voices saying? If it's anything dangerous then straight to A and E, if not then get an urgent GP appointment. It might be absolutely nothing, might be due to stress or medication but if it's something more serious then the earlier it's caught the better. People with ADHD are at higher risk of psychosis and schizophrenia so definitely worth getting checked out.

It's fantastic that she felt she could talk to you about this, as that is not a conversation I could have when i struggled with MH as a teen - so well done to her and to you.
