I have a real craving. Tbh I have probably tried most of them but posting just in case. Which one is your favourite? Can shop at either Sainsbury’s or M&S

I was hesitant to say Co-op in case I was revealed as a culinary heathen but I've been emboldened by other posters. So yes, Co-op.

This thread has made me add a tin of chickpeas to my shopping list so that I can make some.

Sorry, this wasn't helpful Grin

Sabra or Yarden.

Those who say homemade hummus is quick, I disagree. I’ve had people’s quick blitzed hummus using tinned chickpeas and I find it bitter and grainy. Using dried or good quality jarred makes a big difference, so does shelling the cooked chickpeas. It takes forever, but the hummus is so much better.

Plus the washing up, I cant stand getting the food processor out for things, I dont like putting the blades in the dishwasher and am a bit frightened of them in my hands

Can you recommend a tahini brand @peekaboopumpkin

We don't have any ethinc grocery shops round here unfortunately.

Al Arz is the one Ottolenghi uses, but there are other similar ones on amazon. Any of the brands that look similar are good, in a big plastic tub. The small jars of tahini tend to be coarse and not as pourable, you want it creamy and smooth with no bitterness.

RampantIvy · 26/10/2024 08:39

I agree about the washing up, but I am going to try the Ottolenghi recipe. It does sound like a faf, but my curiosity has been piqued and I want to see how much better it is.

I'm waiting for the recommendations and arguments about good and bad tahini as my last jar has just run out so now I need to know which brand MN thinks is best.

@peekaboopumpkin has made a recoomendation.

Iam looking at Ottolenghi's online shop and I think my bank account might regret it.

Ramonas hummus is a UPF, it has some weird ingredients.

If you make your own hummus it can taste bitter depending on the tahini you use. Some are way better than others. The ones in small jars from supermarkets are usually crap and a strange texture.

You need to make sure your tahini is soft and fresh.

BeretInParis · 26/10/2024 09:05

IrisApfel · 25/10/2024 09:47

Sabra for smooth
Ramona's for textured

I've tried making my own so many times and it never tastes as good as bought.

This for Sabra and Ramona.
I'm also very happy to support Israeli producers. In fact, I might buy a bit more Sabra from now on.

I've never actually bought it myself, my bosses do and I eat it at work, but yes I'm going to continue to eat it.

Thats fine, I’m not criticising. Some posters might want to know though.

I found that helpful. Hadn’t realised. Thanks for posting.

Came on to recomend Ranona's. And to tell you for the love of god never to make Ottolenghi's. It will make all other hummous taste like something from the back of a service station chiller cabinet for ever and ever.

I couldn't agree more, now travel to a Turkish supermarket to get Meze brand as that bloody recipe has spoiled my taste buds forever!

Ok, will have to try that now. Have a couple of jars of Spanish chick peas in the cupboard. They’re 2 for 1 at Lidl atm if anyone’s interested. Always find jars much better than canned or dried.

Thank you for the heads up. I'm near one today.

Reporting back on Ottolenghi's recipe.

Very smooth
Not enough garlic and lemon
Too much tahini

Would I make it again? No.

Which recipe though, I have Falastin and there are 2 in there alone

DD said it was excellent. I prefer to add EV oilive oil to hummus and less tahini TBH.

I think I would make it again without bothering to get rid of the chickpea skins, add more garlic and lemon juice, less tahini and add EV olive oil.

I think the key is to use jarred chickpeas and to heat them.

I tell a lie, there is one recipe in Falastin, and its slightly different to the one in your post, there is almost double the tahini for a start

The 2 different ones are in Comfort, again slightly different quantities of tahini but the biggest differences are the additions by way of either cumin or fennel depending on the version

He doesnt seem to use oil in most of his versions whereas I like a really oily humous, EVOO only, Greek not Italian

I wonder how many total versions of houmous he does?

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/10/2024 20:49

I have explored this quite methodically and Tesco is the best. I am lucky in that I can shop at Sainsbs, M&S, Morrisons, Lidl, Aldi, Asda and Waitrose all in easy striking distance. I don't really go to Tesco unless I need bog standard hummus.

Agapornis · 26/10/2024 20:52

Meze.
Ramona.

Though I'm happy that Ramona has started selling smaller pots, because I once gave myself food poisoning eating leftover Ramona after having been away, and its effects were decidedly unpleasant. So don't try eating Ramona 3 weeks or so after opening 😅

Not my fave but Sabra and Yarden are exactly the same thing. Sabra has that fake Arab-ish font. Yarden tends to be in the kosher fridge section (if you supermarket has one). Sometimes one will be cheaper. They're really trying to milk it from all sides there...

This is THE best - available at most supermarkets. Gorgeous texture and has pine nuts on top and whole chickpeas in the bottom, it has such a great flavour.

Edited

Awful texture reminds me of my child's nappies when they were ill when younger.

Thank you for homemade suggestions but I asked for shop bought recommendations

When not making my own, I like Tesco's own. I prefer a slightly gritty humous. I have pretty much tried them all.
The Romana is nice too but yes the pot is large.

purplebeansprouts · 05/01/2025 08:41

I bought some for the first time this week and can say that it is the best shop bought one I have ever tried.

I made a baked hummus dish (Leon recipe) with it and it was amazing.

Yes it's the one that most tastes like homemade
