Credit advice

We are in the uk. Moving house we reported our final meter reading for gas. It was higher than expected and so we asked the gas company to check it. The call agent agreed it looked incorrect and that they would investigate. We cancelled our direct debit and waited to hear. Then we started getting chased for payment a week or so later. We called the gas company and they hadn’t checked the problem - it turned out to be an algorithm issue (they pushed our direct debit down incorrectly) but we did owe the money as we had used the gas. We were a bit annoyed as it was their algorithm but we agreed to pay and the call handler set up a monthly arrangement for us. This turned out to be a massive mistake it got reported on our credit file as two late payments and an ar - tanking my husbands score. We phoned immediately to question this and paid in full straight away. Gas company are now unwilling to fix the credit report. Anything we can do?

Two other bits of info: BG sent us an emailed letter about our case which was addressed to another person (name and address on letter). Is this a Gdpr breach? When we paid in full (immediately on finding out about the credit issue) BG arranged for the payment to be returned (despite us agreeing it with their customer services) we had to pay again to actually close the AR and wait for a week for the incorrectly returned payment to reach our account.
