Front door not opening! What to do next?

Dropped DD off to school, came home and front door is not opening!
I can hear the mechanism is moving when I move the handle upwards into the lock position and turn the key, but when I try to pull handle down and turn key it’s not working. Key to back door is inside. No windows open. Husband not answering phone yet. Lovely neighbours have given tea and to use their living room while I figure this out. crazy start to the day!

Call a locksmith. They will be able to get the door open. Of course then you might find you can’t lock it again!

Get wd40 from shop or neighbour or some spray oil first.

DH has come, he can’t get in either.

My worst nightmare. Always carry a key to the back!

CardboardTube · 24/10/2024 10:32

Have you tried graphite powder?

Applestrudel71 · 24/10/2024 10:33

On the phone to house insurance, policy says only covered if house is not secure… but this isn’t the problem-it’s too secure!
maybe we’ll have to break in somehow to make it unsecured. Wow this morning is not going as planned! Quite funny really. So pleased that I didn’t go out and leave oven on, or have pets in the house or other situation that would make this much worse.

Yes may come to that but want to know if the house insurance may cover it, they may want to use certain provider?

We've had three door mechanisms go over the years. Just call a locksmith.

Worth knowing though if you can't exit your property, you may be covered if you have emergency repairs on your insurance - at least that's what our insurance told us

I have hidden a back door key under a stone in the garden. This has proved useful a few times. Also the ILs do this, which means we can get into their house if they're out (with their permission!).

I lived my self out a couple of times. And also locked myself out of the car at the same time. (Don't ask!) phone was in the car. Managed to co tact my dad via my Apple Watch and he gave me the phone number for my insurance company who arranged a locksmith.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/10/2024 11:38

I now keep a spare key at work, where I can get it 24/7

Applestrudel71 · 24/10/2024 12:58

Sorted! he was in within 30secs, locking mechanism broken and now replaced. Will definitely consider spare back door keys 🤦🏻‍♀️

My goodness, that sounds crazy! Thank heavens for the Apple Watch coming to the rescue! Locked out of home and car with no phone must have been awful!

Glad you got in again! What a morning!

Just be careful not to phone one of those cowboy locksmiths.
