What wouldn’t you buy from a charity shop? Why? What do you buy? What’s the best bargain you’ve picked up? Genuinely curious, I’ve always picked up kids toys, books ect I think it’s a great way to re use / save money. never any kitchen bits but I know people pick up some good bargains..

I expect Catherine feels the same when she wears Diana's or the late Queen's cast-offs...

😍👌👑

I was my sister's bridesmaid a couple of years ago. I bought my dress and shoes from the chazza.

I was universally deemed magnificent.

Can everyone shut up about the underwear you can't actually buy in charity shops already?

We'll shut up about it when you admit that you don't know what every single charity shop in the UK (and other countries that MN users may reside in) sells or does not sell.

Several people have told you that theirs sell bras / swimwear / shapewear / slips and these all class as either underwear and/or are crotch adjacent.

Teachymummy · 24/10/2024 16:17

My wedding dress was from a charity shop and it was stunning. Didn't see the point in spending £1000 (it was quite a few years ago) on something I'd wear for one day.

Southlondonbynature · 24/10/2024 16:46

The charity I volunteer for has a deal with IKEA, in that when the display units are finished with, they are donated to the charity and they get sold on their eBay site

Maddy70 · 24/10/2024 16:46

Shoes...i just get the ick

KnottedTwine · 24/10/2024 17:02

None of the big chains sell second hand knickers and bras that I have seen, and I’ve been in a lot of charity shops! The two large chains I have volunteered in will only sell nightwear and swimwear BNWT or in the case of swimwear, without tags but with hygiene sticker attached. Other smaller or independent charity shops may do differently.

earrings are easily cleaned/sterilised. Some people are just funny In general about hygiene and germs and second hand.

pimplebum · 24/10/2024 17:08

I am an avid charity shopper ( and charity shop worker) and have never seen knickers for sale unless they were clearly brand new in their packet

VimtoVimto · 24/10/2024 17:29

I have seen bras for sale in charity shops but it’s obvious from looking at them they have been hardly worn.

Buying books from a charity shop is just the same as borrowing them from the library.

Kinneddar · 24/10/2024 17:31

Books. Second hand (& library) books give me the boak. Can't stand the smell

ZippyDoodle · 24/10/2024 17:32

Jeans / trousers / shorts (I’ve learned a shocking amount of people don’t wear underwear…ty MNers who proudly declare they don’t).

I wouldn't assume new clothes are safe then either!

Needmorelego · 24/10/2024 17:38

@Kinneddar but even when you buy a book new it will have been touched by dozens and dozens of people before you decided to buy it.

FeetLikeFlippers · 24/10/2024 17:47

I wouldn’t buy used shoes but other than that I buy loads from charity shops and have picked up some absolute bargains over the years. My best finds have been antique and vintage bric a brac but these are getting harder to find these days.

But when you buy it new it has a nice new smell about it.

Needmorelego · 24/10/2024 18:26

@Kinneddar I buy a lot of new release paperbacks from charity shops that are clearly bought by someone, read once and then donated straight away. I often see books I want new in Waterstones or wherever. Often literally released that day.
I then frequently find a copy in a charity shop often barely a week later. You wouldn't know they are secondhand.

laraitopbanana · 24/10/2024 18:27

Nowadays I find it very much the same price than new at Tesco so 🤷🏼‍♀️

Otherwise I found my wedding shoes in a charity shop. 5£. still have them. Still love them! And sooooo comfy even though they really don’t look comfy ah!

That I don't mind but it's the small. I cant stomach the smell of library books and most second hand books

tommyhoundmum · 24/10/2024 18:49

I got Annello and Davide shoes and a Harrods full length cashmere coat

MoonWoman69 · 24/10/2024 18:50

I am blessed with decent charity shops around me, none of which "smell musty" or sell second hand knickers. The clothes are clean too, but I will wash them before wearing. There's a little market town about 5 miles away that is wall to wall charity shops! I have a monthly trip there too!
But who donates things with holes in or food down the front?! Anything I clear out for our local charity, the PDSA, is totally fit to wear and washed first. Anything past its use goes in the bin! Especially underwear!
I personally wouldn't buy shoes, only because I've never seen a pair I like and never a pair that looks in decent condition. They're always squashed or mucky looking!
Anything else is fair play and with clothes, so long it's in good repair and a material that doesn't hold smells!
My best buy was a pair of floor to ceiling curtains, heavy, lined and in dark plum, which matched my painted feature wall perfectly! £8! The cheapest I'd priced them at was £120 new! Saved myself a fortune!

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 24/10/2024 19:00

I used to be a C.S snob.

There was a time I didn't buy anything at all, until I realised, I give away a lot of good, clean, decent quality stuff and someone out there buys it.
Otherwise it would go to waste. So there are other normal people out there I'd be happy to use their used but washed/dry cleaned stuff.

Wouldn't buy from a dirty charity shop though as if the stuff isn't clean, it's hard to shake off the image, no matter how much you wash it.

Tooty78 · 24/10/2024 19:13

My best charity shop bargain was an Autograph butter soft, black leather jacket for £6. This was about 10 years ago though before prices went mad.
I still wear the jacket!

Vynalbob · 24/10/2024 19:37

Not a lot I wouldn't maybe old hats or cutlery.
Find it hard to not buy puppets (will seek help).
Most interesting buy was a 50p 78 record that I sold on to a museum in Canada.

Underwear is the only thing I think 🤔

MrsScarecrow · 24/10/2024 21:04

BestZebbie · 23/10/2024 09:20

Presumably you do, though? So it wouldn’t actually be quite the same as second-hand knickers?

NO

MrsScarecrow · 24/10/2024 21:08

Does that make it any Better? Maybe they died in that jumper? Least said about dying in the underwear 🤑🤮🤢
