What wouldn’t you buy from a charity shop? Why? What do you buy? What’s the best bargain you’ve picked up? Genuinely curious, I’ve always picked up kids toys, books ect I think it’s a great way to re use / save money. never any kitchen bits but I know people pick up some good bargains..

I don't buy anything electrical now. Not after my most recent experience. Saw and tested a milk frother and I was mighty chuffed. Got home and tried it out with water in and it worked fine. Next time using milk, it tripped the entire house. So that put me off somewhat.

Sorry to bring up underwear again 😂 but our local does in fact sell underwear, but only for children. There is a seperate plastic bin with them in, but I have side eyed some men's boxers in there before. It is the only spot in the shop where I don't stick my hand in and do a rummage.

I recently bought a towelling bath robe, so don't know if that counts as ick to some. It got a 90 wash and I love it getting out the bath.

I just replaced my very old Corningware, my dog broke my old well used one (Labrador, don't ask).... There was a whole bunch of Corningware and I was tempted to take the lot, but my dish drawer wouldn't have thanked me. Took some elbow grease to get someone else's dinner off, but we are all good now 😂

I do end up buying very random stuff. Brought my ds the Chivas Regal collection tins (he collects whiskey) and I can tell you, the boy was chuffed. If I convert they cost about 20p. Easily pleased that lad.

And a heavy glass ice bucket/holder that I just couldn't leave. I don't use it for it's intended purpose but for my sourdough starter. I saw some etching at the bottom, checked it out and yes, it's worth quite a bit.

I have no issues with any clothes and rotate my wardrobe thanks to them. But there was no way I was taking those skanky Birkenstocks.

So appliances and Birks are my two no's.

I notice a lot of posters are saying they wouldn't buy underwear from a charity shop. I was actually under the impression that charity shops don't accept donations of underwear.

We don't. But unfortunately we don;t have x-ray vision when black bags are handed over. Used undies belong in the textile recycling bins!

As a volunteer in a CS, and a long time browser in others, I’d be interested to know where you (and so many others)have seen old pants for sale? Our shop doesn’t sell used knickers, used boxers, old socks etc., and I don’t know any that do.

As others have mentioned some do

Jfdomega · 10/11/2024 14:15

Oh, do they sell second hand knickers?, interesting. Unwashed? Only messing! I’m a guy, I had few drinks! Got a stupid mood coming on! Can’t help it! Giggling away like al idiot …….Sorry.

Jfdomega · 10/11/2024 14:30

Going to go now before I get myself in trouble. lol. Bye bye. 🥵

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/11/2024 14:40

I’d never buy underwear but almost anything else is fine - as long as it looks Ok.

Best bargain was a large Disney Princess Fairy Castle with all the princesses and assorted bits, bought for £8 when Gdd1, now 9, was 2. The batteries (it plays Disney-film songs) only ran out recently. Last time Gdcs were here I suggested taking it to the charity shop, but Gdd1 is sentimentally attached to it, and Gdd2 (coming up to 5) still plays with it.

Gds (8) of course couldn’t give a monkey’s. 😂

Isseywith2witchycats · 10/11/2024 16:16

Im surprised at charity shops selling second hand underwear at ours socks knickers, underpants and bras if already worn go straight in the rag basket
i buy a lot of books which i read and donate back, got an under seat cabin bag this week brand new with the tags on for next years holiday, shoes no thats my hill to die on wont buy second hand shoes, clothes yes as i can stick them in the washing machine, jewellery yes specially vintage brooches

fussychica · 10/11/2024 16:24

I rarely buy from them anymore as I feel some of them are taking the micky charging more for a used item than you could buy if for new but I used to be a real fan.
Things I wouldn't buy - underwear, swimwear and nightwear, hats, shoes unless virtually unworn. Obviously anything in poor condition.

LucyLocketLovesPollyPocket · 13/11/2024 19:16

So it turns out my local charity shop does sell underwear, and no, it was not all new!
