What wouldn’t you buy from a charity shop? Why? What do you buy? What’s the best bargain you’ve picked up? Genuinely curious, I’ve always picked up kids toys, books ect I think it’s a great way to re use / save money. never any kitchen bits but I know people pick up some good bargains..

Underwear because yuck.

Shoes because secondhand shoes can damage your feet.

okydokethen · 23/10/2024 19:52

I don't like the clothes, they are hard to look through and rarely my size and... sorry but they can smell.
I like kitchen bits, nick nacks and when the kids were younger, toys.

Ellmau · 23/10/2024 19:54

Clothes of any sort, I just get the ick.

Mainly I buy books.

Starlightstarbright3 · 23/10/2024 19:57

I litterally don’t buy anything from them anymore .. price and the colour co indignation which makes me have to look all over the place . I go on vinted instead

MyEarringsAreGreen · 23/10/2024 20:03

I wouldn't buy very used shoes, underwear or secondhand Primark. Will buy everything else!! Prices not too bad round my way - I've just bought a Dorothy Perkins jumper dress for £6!

ThomasPatrickKeatingsDegas · 23/10/2024 20:25

I used to love charity shopping but unless it’s a independent charity shop in a small town, most of it is fast fashion tat over priced and minging.

Needmorelego · 23/10/2024 20:29

Do people not realise charity shops don't sell SECONDHAND underwear and socks. Only new products the charity has purchased the same way any other retailer does 😂

LucyLocketLovesPollyPocket · 23/10/2024 20:39

Buy the nasty old stinky ass shoes and sell then on ebay or vinted for a mint to those inclined to...enjoy them. Just takes the right words in the listing.

Bonjovispjs · 23/10/2024 20:44

Shoes and pyjamas. Don't want anything that someone's manky feet have been in, same goes for their minge, just no 🤢

Like others, shoes. Unless they're clearly new. You'd have such a hassle getting rid of fungus, smells etc. I also won't buy sports leggings because I don't think sweaty crotch washes out properly from that material. Even if they were clean I would think of it. And bed linen. Even if it were spectacular I would think of bugs.

Needmorelego · 23/10/2024 21:05

@OneLoftyFish how would you know if the previous owner was dead?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/10/2024 21:06

Best bargain - Kenwood chef with all the whistles and bells. 2 weeks before lockdown. It made a lot of banana cakes! I use it at least once a week. £20.

Also, a Buffalo Windshirt (if you know, you know), £3, 1989. Still wear it.

Also, little bag of minature toy road signs, traffic cones, wheelbarrows etc. £1. Kept DS entertained for hours, for years.

Wouldn't wear underwear. Can and do wear any other type of clothing from "Boutique CS"!

@OneLoftyFish huh? Why would they necessarily smell musty? They could have been new and only worn once then the owner died 🤔

Trethew · 23/10/2024 21:08

Knickers and bras

I volunteer in a charity shop, all pre used underwear and socks go to rag. If we get new underwear, which is rare, that can be sold.

Lemevoir · 23/10/2024 21:22

I always scout the bookshelves in my local charity shops.

Best buy was a cashmere jumper that I spotted from across the shop.

Would never consider buying shoes, unless new with labels.

RosesAndHellebores · 23/10/2024 21:29

Books and glass fruit bowls for trifle.

Clothes and shoes are the same as jumble. No thank you.

Allatonce2024 · 23/10/2024 21:33

Car seat, bike helmet or anything designed for safety.

You don't know how someone kept it

BananaPalm · 23/10/2024 21:33

Shoes (I don't want athlete's foot which is a nightmare to get rid of) and underwear. That's about it. Love charity shops!

Needmorelego · 23/10/2024 21:34

@Allatonce2024 charity shops usually aren't allowed to sell items like that.

Needmorelego · 23/10/2024 21:35

There seems to be a lot of misinformation about what charity shops actually sell on this thread.

Gowlett · 23/10/2024 21:40

Anything that passes the sniff test.
Shoes generally must be new.
