What wouldn’t you buy from a charity shop? Why? What do you buy? What’s the best bargain you’ve picked up? Genuinely curious, I’ve always picked up kids toys, books ect I think it’s a great way to re use / save money. never any kitchen bits but I know people pick up some good bargains..

Once found a great coat, new with labels on.
It was heavily infused with wet dog, though…

I buy all sorts- clothes, kitchen stuff, books, CDs, lamps and furniture. Toys when the kids were younger. And art!

Wouldn't buy shoes but that's about it.

Things can be washed or given a good clean - I love a charity shop hunt!

OneFingerOneThumbKeepMoving · 23/10/2024 22:02

I love the books from charity shops however they do have to pass my "sniff test" 🤷🏻‍♀️😀

Whatnextaaaahhh · 23/10/2024 22:03

Some saying they buy books but not clothes.. in my head books are unhygienic because the previous reader touched every page so that would be a no from me too.

MilmoMaggins · 23/10/2024 22:04

Underwear
Swimwear
Nightwear
Soft toys
Cushions

I don't mind shoes if they've only been lightly worn.

skippy67 · 23/10/2024 22:06

I've never bought anything from a charity shop, and probably never will.

Justleaveitblankthen · 23/10/2024 22:09

Sports wear,
Sheets,
Underwear
The thought of another person's sweat being seeped into the fibres 😬
Am fine with jeans, jumpers and jackets though.

My local charity shops are usually wall to wall blouses and Tshirts in summer, jumpers in winter...and handbags everywhere 😂

JC03745 · 23/10/2024 22:11

No
-Underpants, bras, tights. Underpants, because they are cheap enough new, plus anything with elastic will eventually fail and lose shape. I also have massive boobs, so doubt I'd even find my size 2nd hand!
-Clothes which are more expensive than buying new

Yes
-Most other things that can be washed plus knitting wool, books and gift bags

Notmanyleftnow · 23/10/2024 22:15

I did buy second-hand underwear from them in the nineties when I was poor.
Now, I wouldn't buy shoes because I have foot problems. I also won't buy anything with holes in. I took a jumper up to the till last week and then realised there were several holes in it. The till assistant said that was why it was priced at "only" seven pounds...

MagentaRocks · 23/10/2024 22:15

Shoes, underwear and swimwear. Would pretty much buy anything else.

ThoraZ · 23/10/2024 22:20

I used to buy stuff from charity shops very regularly but I wouldn’t buy anything from them anymore. They never have anything worth buying so I don’t bother going in. I think people must be selling their stuff instead of donating or using clothes bins.

TalesOfTheGoldMonkey · 23/10/2024 09:24

Knickers and bras. That’s pretty much the only thing I wouldn’t buy.

Snap! Sat here in 12 year old M&S skinnies and a lovely 2nd hand top, with some gorgeous boots that I got 3 winters ago in a charity shop for £2! 😊😊

FromCuddleLand · 23/10/2024 22:30

Mattresses or anything over priced. I have charity shopped for years and still regularly get amazing bargains. Recently I've had a suede next long coat, £15, m and s blouse £2, new in packet thermal base layers, £4 each, fat face chunky winter over shirt £6. You have to go regularly and have a good rummage. Best item I ever bought was under £3 and I sold it on for £900.

Shoes and pyjamas. Don't want anything that someone's manky feet have been in, same goes for their minge, just no 🤢

Love your user 💗 name.

It’s the smell of the shops that put me off.

Good grief, I can't believe how weird some people are. I buy tons of books from charity shops. I don't lick them or anything.

How do you cope with door handles and lift buttons etc. They get touched by multiple people every single day.

Could you read a book that a friend or family member had read?

Wigtopia · 23/10/2024 22:57

Underwear, swimwear, shoes. Everything else is fair game!

PrimitivePerson · 23/10/2024 22:58

I'd be willing to buy shoes if they were visibly in very good condition and didn't smell. I've seen some lovely DMs and Converse in charity shops in as-new condition, but never in my size, sadly.
