Speed camera detectors

Can anyone recommend a good one?

I’ve been looking online and I can’t really find one with good reviews! All seem a bit mediocre.

In the nicest possible way, I am not looking for people to say not to speed! I am fully in agreement about this. This is for DH who has now got 6 points on his licence and I don’t want him to get anymore!

Thanks in advance!

To actually answer your question

The snooper things are ok but I think you have to pay to keep them up to date

So as well as greater awareness.... try

Snooper
plus waze
plus look at settings on you car to see if can set it to beep when over speed limit
plus also some cars allow you to set limits on speed. Latter helps on motorways etc

some cars allow you to set limits on speed.

i had a courtesy car - a Ford - 3 years ago that automatically set the limiter by reading road signs (it also made an audible sound when it saw a [triangle] road warning sign.

That'll be the next cycle of "AI" fluffiness - auto speed limited cars.

The problem with this is that the speed limit in the car doesn't always match the actual roads. The technology is far superior to what it was when I first had a qqashqai in 2017 with it and it was wrong more than it was right. My current car does pick up the gantry's on the motorway but the car I had last year, also brand new, didn't. If there are two signs close to each other, it can pick up the wrong one. A road near me was a 40 and is now a 30. Been about a year and my car still says 40. Also, there's a dual carriageway near me with a slip road that has a 30 sign. The car picks that up if you're in the left hand lane. Suddenly reducing to that speed would be dangerous so more needs to be done before that's available.

Oh, I know. A few years ago I had to correct a "shed load" of data from an insurer who had managed to get their black box offering into a twizz because the (cheap) mapping solution they used confused 70mph motorways which crossed a 30mph road.

(Now you or I wouldn't have made that mistake as we understand that cars go along a road, and don't "drop" or "jump" onto another completely different road. However people are more expensive than "apps" ....)

And then you have databases which just never seem to be updated. For a couple pf years there was a 40mph stretch of road near me that Google and Garmin insisted was 50.

Why - it's almost like you are expected to pay attention 100% of the time when driving ! Madness.

That's a very interesting point you raise. How many young drivers with black boxes will have been penalised due to this! I used to work for a tracking company who had a program that fleet managers could use to rate drivers and I honestly thought it wasn't worth the screen it was visible on.

I have family who live in Wales who have said the 20 speed limit is a shambles. It is in fact more dangerous as it is making impatient drivers overtake on roads they shouldn’t be overtaking on

I am not a fan of the 20 limit but it's not "making" anyone do anything.

I would never be cheeky enough to overtake someone doing the speed limit.

With the best will in the world, people make mistakes. If you are driving through a busy city centre, never been there before, following a sat nav, looking out for idiot drivers, then it is easy to miss a sign. We have all done it. Let he without sin cast the first stone as they say!

I don't agree, it's not always clear what a speed limit is. I think that if speed cameras are in use, there should be clear signs some way in front of them.

Mind you, sometimes the speed limit is really obvious, there have been great big 40mph limit signs for the last mile or so, but people will still slam their brakes on and slow to 20 when they see a speed camera.

Ditto when they are going along a motorway at 65, see a police car and slam their brakes on.

There is a reason that speed traps are bright yellow and have to be placed where they can be clearly seen from a distance.

Much as people would love to believe that they're money grabbers (in which case surely they'd be hidden so that they could catch more people?) they're actually there to make people reduce their speed. The more drivers who see them in advance, or who are warned of their existence, the safer that stretch of road will be.

Edited

They used to be grey, so you couldn't see them. I don't object to speed cameras (and prefer them to sped humps and pinch points) but I do object to speed limits not being obvious.

SerendipityJane · 25/10/2024 11:42

, it's not always clear what a speed limit is.

However, in the event you genuinely can't determine the limit, it's hard to go wrong by assuming it's 30 (in England).

It's a limit, not a target, so mistaking a 40 for a 30 isn't the end of the world.

Harder with the 20 limits. For example, I was recently driving through Gloucestershire and there was a van. I'd just been through a few 20 areas. My car said 30 but it looked exactly the same as the 20s and 30 in a 20 is probably points and a fine not SAC and honestly, it's not worth it. So I went at 20 just in case. I'm waiting for my "you're driving too slow letter" as just after the van was a 30 repeater sign 😂

And this week I was driving through Oxford somewhere, maybe Kidlington and my car said 20 as the side roads were 20 and it had picked it up but I'd also just been through some 20s that looked the same and didn't want to risk it for the whole road and a fixed camera. I saw another repeater after and sped up but the poor Range Rover behind me who politely kept a good distance was probably wishing they could just push me faster.

@sharpclawedkitten yes absolutely should be but I find they don't a lot of the time and it's so easy to miss a sign or not realise. For example, near me there's a sign that's been turned around so one side of the road says 20 and the other says 30. If you're toddling along and look at one sign obv assume the other is the same then you could get in real trouble.

Speeding and bad driving is a subject close to my heart as we all just want to get home safely and so many don't but even with the best intentions you can be caught out.
