Speed camera detectors

MrsSmithD · 21/10/2024 00:56

Can anyone recommend a good one?

I’ve been looking online and I can’t really find one with good reviews! All seem a bit mediocre.

In the nicest possible way, I am not looking for people to say not to speed! I am fully in agreement about this. This is for DH who has now got 6 points on his licence and I don’t want him to get anymore!

Thanks in advance!

These are also called speed camera detectors though, take a look online. So OP used the correct terminology relating to the product she was looking for, but it is the Mumsnetters that misinterpreted this, jumping on her like a pack of wild animals. Which sadly I am seeing more and more on mumsnet these days. It has become a place to attack strangers on the internet and no longer the place of support it once was!

Yes, I realise that they are called detectors. I have never seen this before so have been educated.

I still think it is valid to point out that the use of such devices, however they are described / named, is unnecessary if one is paying attention.

With the best will in the world, people make mistakes. If you are driving through a busy city centre, never been there before, following a sat nav, looking out for idiot drivers, then it is easy to miss a sign. We have all done it. Let he without sin cast the first stone as they say!

Oh, the level of entitlement on your post is off the scale.

SophiaJ8 · 23/10/2024 15:20

Waze notifies of all cameras and the speedometer on Waze also goes red if you go over the limit.

SerendipityJane · 23/10/2024 15:44

Citrusandginger · 23/10/2024 13:45

As pp have said Waze has audible alarms if you go above the speed limit and warns you if you are approaching a speed camera. I also use my speed limiter if I'm doing 30 on a quiet road for any length of time to stop my speed from creeping up.

You are the only person to have mentioned using a speed limiter.👍

Says a lot, really.

WhistPie · 23/10/2024 15:47

My car doesn't let you use the speed limiter for 20mph - it's impossible to set it.

My commute has so many different speed limits, I’d be changing the limit every mile.

Changing gear is a pain too.

Odd.

Mine does. However it really struggles on even the slightest incline and you end up riding the brake which I detest.

All that brake dust is probably worse than the exhaust fumes ...

I learned a salutary lesson about that when I was a teenager. Fortunately, I wasn't the driver, but my friend was pulled over for speeding. The police officer asked him what speed he was doing, and all the usual, however my friend tried to use the 'I didn't see the sign'. The police officer gave him the choice of a speeding penalty, or a driving with undue care and attention penalty.

Ironically, in the situation you describe, the last thing a driver would want is something beeping to further distract them.

I used to have this. Fucking Peugeot BUT it had a fabulous sat nav that alerted me to almost all cameras - static and vans. Really inconvenient with all the 20mph zones creeping up.

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 23/10/2024 19:57

A lot of sanctimonious posters here. It's obviously not illegal - they used to post where they would be and what days in the paper. Google and Waze have it as a feature. Some cars come with it as standard and I pay £25 a year for my car to tell me where the static cameras are. This is from the manufacturer app so all legit.

I've had six points at a time. I got them just under 3 years apart and about 60k in the middle. I now drive around 50-60k a year and despite my best efforts, imagine it's only a matter of time until I get another set.

Your speedo is not about 10% out. It's set by the manufacturer for x reading to be y speed and all of their cars are exactly the same. It's not an accident. It's highly planned. It's always reading lower than the actual speed.

Just a watch out. I was using Waze for a bit but have stopped as although you do get an image notification in the area if you're looking at the screen, it beeps to warn you at 0.3 miles and the camera can see you at around 1km so don't do what I did and keep your eyes on the road (but still miss the van) and not the screen and hear the notification at the same time you see the van and not be any safer. Luckily I was within tolerance so didn't get a ticket... yet.

That's not quite true. Radar detectors are illegal and always have been. Systems that use publicly available data such as you describe are not illegal. Nothing sanctimonious about pointing out facts.

Also, I think you have your speedo readings the wrong way around. They always show higher than the actual speed, i.e. your speedo shows 70, you are actually doing about 67.

I have driven similar mileage to you with no points, over a period of nearly 40 years. I had 3 points in my late teens, but none since. I have found the mark one eyeball to be very effective.

@HappiestSleeping yes, that's what I thought I said 😂😂😂

The sanctimony is more regarding "not learning his lesson" and the like. We all make mistakes and it's best to plan a way to not make them so he's probably doing the right thing. I took "device" to mean the usual Waze/sat nav's etc and not radar which I imagine is outdated anyway now?

My car flashes the speed limit sign on the heads-up display when I go over to get my attention. I think you can set a beep too.

Radar detectors are NOT illegal in the UK. Jammers are, however.

YourElatedLimeJoker · 23/10/2024 21:12

Yes very sanctimonious! I can’t believe the things I’ve read on this thread. The OP was clearly asking for help, not trying to enable her husband to break the law and has been spoken to appallingly. One person accused her of attempted murder earlier. It is tantamount to bullying everyone piling on and saying vile things about her and her husband who clearly made a few mistakes but is trying to put things right.

I have been through this thread and have copied below some of the utter filth that has been posted in this thread, to a man driving 25 miles an hour, and his wife trying to find a sat nav / Wave type device to help him stick to the speed limits:

“Well, if you find something "suitable" and he gets caught speeding and the police discover it, I sincerely hope he gets charged with attempted murder and you as an accomplice.”

“The roads will be safer when he is banned.”

“he doesn't belong on the road or deserve a license.”

“pre-meditated breaking of the law”

“He is wilfully deciding to break the law, knowing he could kill someone if he causes an accident.”

“He'd be better off learning to count”

“You should focus on not letting your children ride in the car ever with this dangerous driver. And take him off the insurance on any vehicle you own”.

“So you want to facilitate illegal behaviour.
Lovely”

“Why the fuke do you and your husband feel so entitled...to speed and break the law?”

“Tell your DH to take responsibility for his actions and stop speeding.”

“why are you looking for it for him? Is he just not bothered about fines and law breaking? Does that have any overspill in the other aspects of his life?”

“Just because such gadgets are 'legal', morally it is pants”

“oh look a woman has to do the work of fixing him”

^^^ these commenters are everything that’s wrong with society right here. Yet I bet these are the ones going around in “be kind” T-shirts!

Well, I've been trying periodically since they brought in the 20mph limit and I can categorically say that you can't do it on my 12 year old Ford!

I got slated for doing that earlier. Apparently, we are supposed to know what posters meant, and not just what they said 🤣

My being outdated happens on an almost daily basis now. 🤦‍♂️

Indeed. Although by “radar detector” we tend to mean radar, laser and GPS. When you combine that with Waze, speed limit recognition tech and good observation skills you’re much less likely to be speeding in the first place and if you are there’s a good chance you’ll be aware of an upcoming camera/trap.

Even so, the only way to deal with 20mph zones is to drive at or under 20. Knowing where the cameras are is immaterial.

Same for the 30mph stretches that are monitored by average speed cameras.

Generally nowadays around the main city routes it's almost impossible to speed anyway during the day. You find yourself in a line of cars all doing whatever the limit is.

I (very idly) wonder what would happen if someone published all the locations of security CCTV cameras around the UK, so that people could shoplift or mug people without worrying about "getting a ticket" ? Judging from this thread, that would only be me though 😀
