Speed camera detectors

Can anyone recommend a good one?

I’ve been looking online and I can’t really find one with good reviews! All seem a bit mediocre.

In the nicest possible way, I am not looking for people to say not to speed! I am fully in agreement about this. This is for DH who has now got 6 points on his licence and I don’t want him to get anymore!

Thanks in advance!

Waze always tells you if there's a speed camera ahead, or police about!

Yup, just use Waze. Gives you all the warnings you need. And shows your - real - speed.

liveyoungstayactive · 21/10/2024 10:09

Speed kills. Is your husband not aware of that?

Skunkaniseed · 21/10/2024 10:10

You could always drive safely and at the speed limit then it won't matter if there is a camera or not

those who use a satnav to avoid being caught by fixed/mobile spots - though those who regularly speed to slow at cameras begin to get in habit of ignoring the mobile spot locations and eventually speed through or slam their brakes the day that a mobile camera is there
@tommika how do you know this? Are you hiding out in people's cars?

GladAllOver · 21/10/2024 13:38

Many speed zones now check average speeds over a distance. You cannot beat them.

supermamio · 21/10/2024 07:52

Its interesting that they're illegal as they are on google maps. When i connect my phone to my car via USB google maps loads on the screen, pings and tells me there is a mobile speed camera ahead.

That's pretty clever, what does it use to detect mobile cameras?

Gastropod · 21/10/2024 10:08

Waze doesn't magically know there's police around, other drivers have to repoet it don't they?

Gastropod · 21/10/2024 18:19

I always thought that the "police reported ahead" notification in Waze is another way for Waze to flag up speed traps without saying they are speed traps. As long as somebody taps "still there" then the warning remains in place.

No idea. Just pinged and told me one day. So now make sure to have it plugged in at all times 😂

MrsSmithD · 23/10/2024 00:23

Ok wow, this is the first time I looked at this since posting and it’s kicked off. Some really shocking nasty comments aimed towards me!

I was looking for a device that will tell him if he goes over the speed limits to warn him to slow down, as well as detecting speed cameras as a deterrent!! For context, all points he received were by going 25-26 mph!!! Yes it is speeding, but if you think that’s reckless driving at that speed you are insane. It wasn’t outside a school or a built up area he was caught.

In Wales the speed limits are now 20mph on some roads that used to be 30mph. If you’ve been driving all day, concentrating on your sat nav when you don’t know the area and which lane you need to be in etc, when in busy traffic, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility you can miss a 20mph sign as they are not then repeated continuously up the same stretch of road.

I obviously can’t control what an other person does but I wanted to help find a solution to figure out the speed limits when they have all changed - not to help him speed. And certainly not to be spat at with pure vitriol! If he drives everywhere at 20mph just in case, then I would personally think that is dangerous driving as you will have people flying up behind you and that in itself will cause an accident.

And for the record, the devices I’m
looking at are not illegal, you can buy them in Halfords for goodness sake.

The vitriol and sanctimony from some posters on this thread is a sight to behold. If only everyone was so perfect and morally superior.

Here is the device on Halfords with the write up “The Snooper My-Speed XL G2 is the latest version of our extremely popular 'My-Speed XL'.
Designed for peace of mind, it alerts drivers to changes in the speed limit on every road they travel on. That means you can be sure you’re driving safely, protecting your driving licence and avoiding speeding fines. ”

Instead of asking OP for the facts you’ve basically all just attacked her!

Christ, her DH was done for speeding at 26 mph, I could peddle my bike faster than that!

Christ, I could even drive a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe faster than that 🙄

Anyone know of a 'Bobby in the Area' detector?

I don't want to buy one, I just know where I can 'get' one.

Speedometers read about 10% higher than true speed, so if he was doing 26 in a 20, his speedo would have been indicating about 30 mph. I've no sympathy.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should,
Whichever way you try to justify it, such devices facilitate people such as your husband to speed when and where they can. You are supporting him in this, whether he be doing 25/6mph in a 20mph zone, or 90 mph in a 70mph zone.

So, even if you could walk faster, the fact remains he has points on his licencexand his wife wants to facilitate speeding
Just because such gadgets are 'legal', morally it is pants

DreamW3aver · 23/10/2024 06:45

Maybe the lesson here is to explain the situation ifully n your first post. How was anyone to know you live in Wales and that the speed limit is 20 and that he was caught doing under 30?

You'd have got very different answers I suspect if you'd asked a question with the full facts

Speedometers could have up to a 10% error - that error can go either way - so simplistically if you are actually travelling at 30mph - your speedometer could read 27mph or 33mph. So if someone was clocked at 36mph - it’s possible they were actually travelling at 32.4 or 39.6 - the speed gun which we hope is regularly calibrated but will have its own inaccuracies, can’t tell how accurate your speedometer calibration is. Do they allow you 10% in case your speedometer is reading low. Of course most people can measure the accuracy of their speedometer when they travel through the lit up speed warning sign or when using an app like Waze and may adjust their speed accordingly.
Just so you know the facts before you start quoting statistics.

Speedometers are more like 5% off unless a car's tyres are wildly over/under inflated, and the accuracy is better at lower speeds because it's to do with the number of wheel rotations. Technically they could be 10% +6mph off but that's quite unlikely.

Also for those of you who don't live in Wales, there are government and council consultations to change many of the 20mph roads back to 30mph because they're admitting many of the changes were unnecessary. The limits around schools and side roads should absolutely stay but there are many roads that are now 20mph which really don't pose any more "danger", where the limit probably should never have changed.

ThornVampire · 23/10/2024 08:37

I think people were pissed off for more than 1 reason though

  1. he is speeding, and therefore driving without due care and attention

  2. he is not bothered about it (enough to fix it)

  3. oh look a woman has to do the work of fixing him

Modern vehicles have a 10% overage, next time you pass a roadside speed display, go past at exactly 20 mph and it'll show 18; go past ate exactly 30mph and it'll show 27 - those signs legally have to be completely accurate. This is deliberate, because most people drive a little over.

I have friends who do street legal drag racing with cars and motorbikes and they tell me that their speedos are always 10% over, compared to the radar trap readings.

Sure but all cars on the road aren't modern.
