If you’ve been blonde and brunette - which did you prefer?

I’ve both but struggled with blonde to make it look nice since I’m naturally dark and was constantly fighting against it going warm and snapping from bleach.

I’m now going back to brunette but I’ll miss it.

Much prefer brunette. Its healthier looking and shinier (I'm naturally dark too) was never happy with the shade of blonde as was addictive getting it lighter and lighter until it looked bad! Perhaps brunette with a blonde balayage? I'm currently brunette and toying with that idea to give my hair colour some depth

I've gone back to brunette and I thought I'd miss being blonde but when I look back at photos I realise that I was blonde blind and it was too blonde!

I never actually intended to be blonde blonde, just highlights but every time I got the roots done it just went blonder and blonder until I was completely blonde.

I'm enjoying the cost! Now all I do is have a trim every so often. I don't colour it at all. I'm making the most of my natural colour before it goes grey! It's in excellent condition as well. It wasn't too bad when it was coloured but now that there's no bleach or colour on it, it looks so shiny. I went for a trim last week and the hairdresser was really complimentary saying what lovely hair I had, which was nice!

I’m going an icy brunette, very pale. So it’s not too much of a shock 😂 so it will kind of be a balayge for now.

Im paler than a dead person and brown hair, no matter the shade, makes me look dull, boring and I disappear into the background. Blonde hair seems to make me stand out and people just assume I'm pretty as I have nice hair rather than my actual face having much to do with it but I do look a solid 3/4 more out of ten with blonde. I find I can wear more colours and it and I look more lively.

What pisses me off is the cost of it. £120 (which is frankly a bargain) a time rather than £10max from a box. Ther Schwarzkopf red black from Poundland is amazing too. I use a lot of purple shampoo to stop the warm.

Oh it also hides the greys! Brown aged me in two ways as they shone through after a few weeks.

SisterAgatha · 20/10/2024 20:48

I loved being blonde but my hair is just too naturally dark to keep it up. It would have to be short to cope with the damage as when it’s long it looks fried. I had 3 x the amount of hair when it was natural. Naturally I had shine like Claudia Winkleman (same colour too).

I’m red now. I like that the most. Also while blonde I got much more negative male attention.

Titsywoo · 20/10/2024 20:50

Blonde suits me better as I am naturally mousy so I'd have to say that. I prefer brunette I just don't have the skin tone to suit it. I never understand when people with lovely black or dark brown hair bleach it - each to their own of course but dark hair is so lovely.

tuberole · 20/10/2024 20:51

Another one who is pale, and blue eyes, blonde just makes me look less washed out. I keep it quite short so it looks healthy (and professionally done).

This made me laugh cos you’ve articulated exactly how I feel. I’d love darker hair in theory but whenever I try it it just doesn’t suit me.

TheSnugHare · 20/10/2024 20:53

I used to have naturally light blonde hair which has gone really dark blonde essentially brown and it was the nicest my hair ever was

TheSnugHare · 20/10/2024 20:54

Oh but I should add that with that my eyebrows were barely visible because they were also blonde and it looked stupid

Mine was always professionally done. I used to pay £300 a month.

I learnt how to tone it myself, but spending 4+ hours on my hair every week was getting too much.

Def blonde, much more flattering to my face than brown.

rainfallpurevividcat · 20/10/2024 20:58

I've enjoyed being both at different times.

But my hair is in much better condition when it has no blonde dye or highlights in it.

I think brown hair and blue eyes is an outstanding combination.

I know I do too on everyone that isn't me! I just don't seem to pull it off like Zoey Deschenel (sp?) sadly, blonde (with a fake tan...) seems to make my blue eyes pop more.

Oh I hear you, I go every 12 weeks I find that hard work enough, she "smudges" it and I do the rooty look though I know that's probably dated now.

Is it cheaper and quicker to go brunette? I wouldn't want my natural colour but this thread is making me want to try a brunette shade, just worried how long it takes to go blonde, and how much better it is for greying now I'm starting to get a few silver hairs.

abigaail · 21/10/2024 07:32

Just googled icy brunette and I think it's lovely!

TeamPolin · 21/10/2024 08:05

Have tried various colours but my best one is a shiny conker brown. Just really lifts my complexion and takes a few years off. Black or very dark chocolate brown made me look cadaver-ish and a lot of blonder tones just made me look very meh and nondescript. I think I'm going to stick with this colour until the grey creeps in, and then will have to have rethink.

Waterboatlass · 21/10/2024 08:25

Blonde, all day long. I was born and stayed light blonde until young adulthood then darkened to dark blonde (I understand the difference between this and light brown is the proportion if yellow to red). I like to keep it mid to lightish blonde, it's a bit of a balancing act with the condition as my ends don't take bleach well but brassiness isn't really a problem. I've had black, browns, reds, not for me.
