Recycling

Boring topic I know!

We've just moved from London to Somerset. When we were in London the rubbish collection was recycling weekly and general waste fortnightly. The recycling was one bin for all recycling and a food waste caddy. You could also have garden waste collected but had to pay extra (we didn't as the only garden waste we had was when the hedge was cut and as that wasn't often he would take the waste down the recycling centre himself).

Somerset are MUCH stricter. Your recycling needs to be separated into plastic, paper, cans and glass as well as food and the general waste is only collected every 3 weeks.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, I know it makes sense to separate it and the general waste 3 weekly is to encourage (or force depending on how you view it!) you to be strict with the recycling. But I'm getting my head round what recycling goes where!

How does your council collect it?

Hampshire. We only have to separate glass recycling, everything else goes in the green bin. Pay for garden waste annually as it saves time at the tip. We don't have food waste yet, apparently its finally happening next year.

I was previously in London, between zone 1-2 on a busy high st. We had 1 bag for ALL recycling. I could put put a recycling bag and bin bag out daily if I wanted and they'd be collected.

I'm now coastal, 2hrs away. Our council don't collect glass, cartons, yoghurt pots and many more items! Cardboard/paper one week, then tins/plastic bottles the next. The wheelie bin is every fortnight still and food caddy weekly.

The new legislation next year will mean that it becomes much more harmonised across the country. We don’t have food waste yet (Hampshire) and can only recycle very limited plastics. At the moment it is general waste fortnightly and recylcing fortnightly (wheely bin for plastic bottles, paper/card and tins, separate glass bin). Garden waste fortnightly at extra cost.
