Flight radar squawks

Hi I'm new to flight radar do we ever know what the 7700 general emergency is?

Also I have noticed a lot of flights to and from Mumbai have issued this call sign over the last few days.

Anyone who can explain on here?

As a general point no, unless the problem is unusual enough to make the MSM or somebody onboard is in the know and broadcast it on social media you’re not likely to know why an emergency has been declared and 7700 used.

Given historically the main reason for squawking 7700, certainly in UK airspace, is a medical emergency then IMO it’s absolutely right that the reasons aren’t routinely released, and TBH in any event most problems that lead to 7700 being used are fairly mundane and probably wouldn’t be of much interest to the general public anyway.

OTOH the two (?) Air India emergencies I heard about this week were noteworthy enough to make the MSM and were supposedly security related/bomb threats.

There have been loads of Air India hoax bomb scares! Like 50 or more.

Ah, yes, thank you I’ve now played a bit of catch up and seen some of the stories from elsewhere…

I think it’s fair to point out for all sorts of reasons that I’m not going to go into threats received by an airline don’t necessarily translate straight into aircraft diverting /squawking 7700…..in any event in the context of the question posed by the OP if 7700 is squawked for reasons of security you are going to have to be happy with just vague details.

Oh ok, interesting @notimagain @Psilocybin sorry what is MSM?

No worries - MSM = Mainstream Media…likes of the UKs Daily Mail, that sort of thing.
