How old were you when you moved out of your parents’ house and why did you?

I was 25. I lived at home during university but I met my then DP while I was at university. I guess I moved out as I wanted to start a life with my now DH! Still see my parents on once a month or so.

What about everyone else?

I had no privacy. Parents opened my post, went through my rubbish, etc.

I felt very suffocated.

I still feel anxious now when I think about it.

They still have issues with boundaries. I can’t let them have a key to my house and if they’re coming over I hide any post/bills/statements.

CoverMeInMarmalade · 19/10/2024 21:34

18 when I left for uni.

echt · 19/10/2024 21:35

Nineteen, to go to university.

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 19/10/2024 21:35

16 didn't get on with my mum. Still don't really. She made my life at home a misery

Icanttakethisanymore · 19/10/2024 21:35

18 - left to go to university and never went back aside from a few months between tenancies. I have a very close relationship with my mum (separated from my father) so no reflection on her but I didn’t want to be where she lived and I wanted to live my own life. I was never shy of work so always had a bit of money, even as a student.

Coconutter24 · 19/10/2024 21:36

21, got pregnant so
moved out with babies dad

betterangels · 19/10/2024 21:37

My relationship with them was not great. Better now but we are all very different.

Nottodayplease36 · 19/10/2024 21:38

17, pregnant and got a council house. Never went back. My family home was overcrowded, and in hindsight my family situation was very strange.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 19/10/2024 21:38

21
I bought a flat and (now) DH and I moved in together

ThoraZ · 19/10/2024 21:38

17, because every day in that house was a living hell and I couldn’t take it anymore. Left at the first opportunity.

VioletCrawleyForever · 19/10/2024 21:38

18 - to go to university

Idontlikeyou · 19/10/2024 21:38

I was away for uni then came back for 2 years, saved and moved out in to the little house I’d bought at just turned 23. I always wanted to live on my own. It was bliss, just me and my cat!

I have lovely parents btw, I just wanted my own space and they were keen I bought. Within 3 years of me buying house prices exploded and the era of being able to buy on a low grad salary were gone (I still have the house-I paid ÂŁ74k, now worth ÂŁ300k).

HippeePrincess · 19/10/2024 21:40

18/19 to move in with my boyfriend because I didn’t like my step mum and he essentially wanted a live in cook, cleaner and sex on tap. Worst thing I ever did.

Simonjt · 19/10/2024 21:40

15 when I went into care, and then 17 when I left my dads flat

Longhotsummers · 19/10/2024 21:41

18 to do final year of secondary school in US on an exchange programme. I returned home for 1 year then left permanently and moved to the other side of the world, although originally I was just going to travel for six months!

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 19/10/2024 21:43

I was 19. I moved out to be closer to my university and also to live with my boyfriend (now husband).

AceofPentacles · 19/10/2024 21:43

15 and my mum was fine with me living on my own. Says it all really

BruFord · 19/10/2024 21:44

23 when I permanently moved out. I did a four-year degree and came home during holidays. Back home for several months after graduation and worked locally while applying for jobs further afield. Moved away when I got one and never went back.

moggiek · 19/10/2024 21:45

18 to get married.

Franhollywood · 19/10/2024 21:46

18

OnTheBounce · 19/10/2024 21:46

18, to go to university; got a job in London and never moved back. Really loved my hometown, and still do, but the industry I work in is still mainly London based.

SummerFeverVenice · 19/10/2024 21:46

17- succeeded in running away

Ratfinkstinkypink · 19/10/2024 21:46

17, I got sick of always being the one who was in the wrong, sick of being called a slag and a slut, and sick of the notes threatening suicide because I was such a "difficult" child.

Citygirlrurallife · 19/10/2024 21:48

Left at 19 to go to uni, came back for 6months afterwards and packed the house up for them as they left for France, moved in with then bf now DH. If DH hadn’t been on the cards my plan had been to stay in my university city and move in with friends there

EveryOtherNameTaken · 19/10/2024 21:50

20 to move in with then boyfriend.
