Going to New York

I’m going to New York next week with my husband and two teenagers.
Apart from needing a lot of money any tips or recommendations for when we’re there?

I agree with the above poster that Ellis Island is a good stop along with the Statue of Liberty. It was a huge part of US history and they have really nice tours where you can learn a lot about it. It was neat seeing all of the Americans looking for the names of their ancestors to see if they’d passed through when they immigrated.

@Everythingaches, a few questions before I start suggesting things to to - are you coming with children, and if so, how old are they? Where will you be staying? Do you have any particular interests in terms of the arts, theater, sports, museums, etc.?

Here's a restaurant recommendation I make to everyone visiting NYC:

It's lovely, the service is fabulous, and the food is divine. It's even reasonably priced by NY standards. Book ahead on the website, tables are hard to get.

I have to run off and do some shopping, but here's a few things they might like:

We found the tour inside the submarine fascinating.

and the stage door tour at Radio City is great fun:

This takes 2-3 hours to see it properly, but it's really moving:

Buy your tickets online and skip the often very long queues.

I'll check back later; feel free to ask me anything.

If you are still out there for Halloween I recommend trick or treating.

My girls loved it.

High Line walk then go to the Chelsea Market afterwards. Amazing food hall and interesting shops.

Brooklyn Botanical gardens was beautiful (but we went in spring, not sure what it will be like this time of year)

All the museums and galleries that other posters have mentioned

Dh & I really liked the Dumbo area. Great vibes. We spent a good 4/5 hours there, just wondering around. We got food (Lots of great food places) grabbed a coffee and sat on the grass banking near the waterfront to admire the fantastic views of Manhattan. Try and go early eve if you can, the twinkling lights of the city are wonderful.

We don’t normally do excursion type things when we are away but I found some discounted tickets for the circle line sightseeing cruise. It was really great. Definitely recommend. The tour guide gave us some great history on NY and the views were just magical. It goes past The Statue Of Liberty and you see New Jersey.

I love NY. You will have a wonderful time.

John's Pizza on Bleeker Street is awesome. You have to queue to get in but it's worth it. The whole Greenwich Village area is great for an evening out. There are some great jazz bars.

We are back now and a bit shell shocked!
walked 130,000 steps in 5 days.
did empire state, ferry, harbour yard at sunset, high line, 2 shows, 2 sport events, lots of coffee, walked by 9/11 memorial.
loads of clothes shops, Barnes and Noble, Sephora, Eataly, lots of unhealthy food. Drinks in hotel bar over looking Times Square.
cookies from lavine bakery, soho, Greenwich, so much. Can’t even remember it all.
Was amazing but exhausting!!!

That’s great, I’m so pleased you had a good time. And you had lovely fall weather as well.

Sounds like an amazing trip 🗽🇺🇸
Unfortunately most of us need to work to pay for such things 😆
