Endless threads about schools going down the pan and poor behaviour in schools making teachers want to leave.
NHS waiting lists and quality of care medical is poor.
housing market market in crisis and affordability of housing

I read the threads and it feels like life in the UK is really shit. Plus crap weathe for 8 months of the year.

how did we get here snd what is the solution?

Life is quite nice in Wales. Property is cheaper, the air is cleaner, there's lots of outdoor space, people are friendly, arts are supported, prescriptions are free, the scenery is breathtaking.....
It's not perfect (where is?) but it's pretty good on the whole.

because everyone wants something for nothing. The NHS is overloaded because I lot of people feel 'entitled', This feeling of entitlement makes people feel bitter. As far as children are concerned, it is a matter of education. There should be lessons on health and nutrition, which could include the systems of the body and how they work. Even 5 year olds can understand some aspects of human health. They learn very quickly when it comes to their pets.

There should be more cookery lessons, so when they leave school, they will know how to cook basic food items instead of the prepared stuff which includes chemicals.

The housing market will always be in crisis in UK because those in control of future planning don't discuss it enough. New housing rarely includes building studio flats for one or two. Something else schools could do, is to teach students how to live in the community, what a community needs by way of essential services, and appreciate the needs of others.

How many children leave school able to understand their bodies and the environment around them, what to look for in housing and what to consider, such as noise and pollution? If children are taught the status quo and not see their own future, how can there be less complaining?

There is more to education than excelling at basic subjects, which are included in living and environment anyway.

yea but how the people on boats still want to come here? Do they like the idea of 1 bed mouldy flat and money in hand ?

Totally agree with you. It’s a shit show. I live in a tiny house, that needs sooooo much work done, private rent. It’s cheap as we know the landlord but would love to move. Unfortunately we don’t have the money for a deposit 1)low income basic jobs 2)high outgoings in bills with 2 kids..

looked at private rent in the area we want- 1100 a month and that’s the cheapest… I won’t even let my son play out. This sounds snobby- but the area is awful.. feral kids, high crime- weed smokers.

I know we should have saved from youth- but we didn't and that’s on us. Nobody should bail us out BUT. We both work, me SE after maternity and DH SE full time. We feel like money just comes in and every penny goes straight out. Always something to pay!!! MOT tax, tv license, stock for my work, car insurance, van insurance, van MOT, school trip fee, nursery fees.. The list goes on. I am ashamed at what I have to offer my kids- all because I don’t have savings, and unfortunately don’t have a family who could gift me a deposit for my first home. Very depressing and tbh makes me feel guilty for having kids!!! They deserve more.

What is this country you’ve moved to ?

Sweden

Cielovista · 18/10/2024 19:23

The weather is def rubbish. But what has made the UK really shit in my opinion is the huge increase in large off lead dogs which now dominate any green space left. Those of us who don’t like/fear dogs are trapped in our houses or have to walk in the street rather than by the river. Abroad, dogs are fewer and mainly kept on leads.

I agree. Move to Australia and complain about the cost of housing and living there. Nice weather though!

There are so many wonderful things about the UK. Just make an effort to enjoy them - go see the beautiful building and sights in London and the countryside. Plenty of plays and musicals are on, and so many museums. Even a pub lunch with friends is lovely.

My DD moved to Aus, earns 3x what she did in the NHS, cheaper housing and works less hours, more time with patients, less stress.... went from wishing she'd never gone into health to loving her choice again.

People also take responsibility for their own health, instead of expecting the state to fix you, we seem to expect the GP to prescribe a drug to fix our over indulgences and laziness.

I quite like being able to own property and vote, so it's not exactly a hellhole here. I live in an area with good schools, decent GPs, efficient local hospital, and we had a lovely summer. I'm in Yorkshire, not some exotic locale.

This.
But it seems to be location specific, I can (In Salisbury) phone my GP and speak to them same day, often see them same day, if not a day or two.
Our hospital is really pretty good, A&E wait is about 4 to 5 hours, which whilst too long is not terrible, ambulance wait for non urgent about 30 mins (I look after a few elderly folks so both are regular features of my life)
Hospital appointments quick, the treatment in hospital is good and the food excellent, the post discharge support is also superb.
I appreciate this is not the picture everywhere, but it's not doom and gloom everywhere you go, more of a patchwork of good and bad.

TV licence should go, BBC should carry adverts and fund itself.

I think the difference is expectation. The Irish health service was always awful. I remember reading people complaining about waiting 4 hours in UK for A&E and thinking wow, that sounds amazing they are so lucky!

It has always been better than the NHS in many respects.

ThatCalmHelper · 18/10/2024 19:35

Nor is keeping paying it!

People love being negative. Is it really shit in the uk? I can list quite a few worse places. If you don’t like where you live, move. Life is far too short to be miserable.

The UK is beautiful and most people live good lives. Imagine being born in Ukraine or the Middle East at the moment!

Doubledenim305 · 18/10/2024 20:27

I talked to people who have left Greece to live here. They think it's heaven on earth, compared to what they have left. Say the Brits don't appreciate what they have got.
All relative I suppose!
Half the world is trying to get in = there are a lot of worse places.

Agree that wealthy people do but plenty don’t. And it might be beautiful but if you can’t visit those beautiful places because you’re working 2 jobs, not really worth it is
it ?
And has it got to the point where we compare ourselves to countries at war ?

OldScribbler · 18/10/2024 20:35

Cluborange666 · 16/10/2024 23:18

I feel like that too but I also read the Irish Times and see that they have a lot of the same problems there. I think it’s a worldwide capitalist on steroids thing. Not sure what the solution is. My kids plan to live in a forest in Finland and work online. And not have any kids themselves…

The two kids who fancy going to Finland are not stupid. Statistically it's the happiest place on earth. Personally I'm happy to be alive as I've lived far longer than I expected.

Most people work very hard to stay poor.

Pls compare the UK to mainland Europe, not countries at war, though Ukrainians in our village go back to Ukraine for dental treatment as they simply can't get it here!! shocking!

I've worked in Sweden and France and whilst there are plenty of excellent places in the UK, its our terrible public services that let us down... from roads to health to education, its all shite!

We've established that you are overjoyed at your financial situation. I'm very proud of you.

I don’t think it’s shit .

Perky1 · 18/10/2024 21:15

I am lucky to live in a scenic village that is a tourist destination. Since the pandemic and relaxation of lockdowns, it has become overwhelmed with visitors and their unreasonable behaviour.

A van life community was established in the lockdowns. They leave domestic waste and empty chemical toilets on verges and in grazing fields. Day trippers leave litter, human poo on footpaths, by field gates and stiles. They have fires and BBQs when they are forbidden due to the fire risk. Fly tipping, trespassing and illegal parking abound. An army of villages cleans up every week. Dogs allowed to run off lead have savaged local pets. Verbal abuse is commonplace for example if a local comments on illegal parking/drive blocking.

Our local city centre has became unrecognisable in just a period of 2 years. It has numerous nail bars, dodgy iPhone repair shops, Turkish barbers, boarded up and vacant retail units. It’s hard to walk around without being propositioned/harrassed by a man who speaks poor English and it’s normal to be pushed around and elbowed in the cheaper shops by immigrant women. I have stopped going there.

I think we are undeveloping.

FrauPaige · 18/10/2024 21:22

I don't think anyone is saying that the UK is shit. I believe some people are saying that aspects of life here are currently more challenging (shit) than they have been, and that they are concerned for the ability of current and future generations to acquire property, access quality education, access healthcare in a timely manner, to be financially solvent, and to have a rewarding social and family life.

These people love their country and the people around them, and want to see it change for the better.

IsThePopeCatholic · 18/10/2024 21:24

The state of our rivers and seas is disgusting. Tory privatisations are shameful.

Papyrophile · 18/10/2024 21:36

I hate agreeing with you @Perky1 , but I think the UK is reversing down the hill too. Not for everyone; if you are clever, then the world is still your oyster. But if you are middling and not driven to succeed, move and triumph, then I think your stage is smaller now than it was 20 years ago. I don't think it has much to do with party politics though.

Pat888 · 18/10/2024 21:40

Things were run to keep prices down which we thought was good but now suffering the consequences - Offwat - also doctors salaries Etc
Also poor quality food
Everything made in China - quality poor but cheap
Everything bought from Amazon or direct from China. We are buying everything from American and Chinese companies so our money goes straight overseas. No tax paid here.

Thankfully I appreciate it- after 6 years in Norway, which was also good.
Two family's who are related to me are heading back to the UK next year for various reasons (Australia/US). There are many people who are desperate to get here...
