People who use an ice-cream scoop to dish up their mashed potato

Please desist. It’s psychopath behaviour and it repulses me.

Just slap a spoon of mash on the plate like a civilized person. Cannot bear those creepy little 'oh I look a bit like ice-cream but I'm not ice-cream' mounds.

Thank you for abiding by this new culinary law from this day forward.

Who does this?

dontlistentome · 16/10/2024 16:16

I've never tried that. You've just put temptation in my path...

Tekphobebruvva · 16/10/2024 16:16

Have you been time travelling back to school dinners from the 1970s?

Hoglet70 · 16/10/2024 16:16

My Mum used to do this. I am laughing so much now!

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 16/10/2024 16:16

I have never seen this apart from school dinners back in the day.

DuhanDuhan · 16/10/2024 16:17

This was the serving suggestion of choice in my primary school in the early 80s, complete with a fine layer of crispiness from shoving the massive tray of potato scoops under a hot lamp for an hour or two to keep warm.

coxesorangepippin · 16/10/2024 16:17

Fil does this

I kinda like it

Like black forest gâteau

NeckolasCage · 16/10/2024 16:18

Surely this was only an issue in 1974.

Jackiebrambles · 16/10/2024 16:18

Yes school dinner mash! I think my Gran used to do this too - personally I quite like it, nice and tidy.

Topseyt123 · 16/10/2024 16:19

You've just reminded me about this from primary school dinners back in the early seventies. 🤣

I'd forgotten about it and have never done it. Now though, I must dig my ice-cream scoop out next time we have mashed potato. 😉🤣

NeckolasCage · 16/10/2024 16:20

Those scoops though, you’ve just triggered a major flashback OP!

That scuffed metal with the loose rolly pale blue wooden handle!

Who does this?

Thats Me I Am GIF by Ryn Dean

Me 🙋‍♀️

I was momentarily ashamed but I'm going to own it now!

Fromage · 16/10/2024 16:22

I spoon mine into a teddy bear mould and then upend that onto the plate.

I'm looking for moulds in the shaps of a pretty flower, a combine harvester, and His Majesty The King, if anyone knows any good sources. Thanks.

PS Ice cream scoop is just basic bitch spud serving and I fully agree it should be stamped out.

MainStreetOrHighStreet · 16/10/2024 16:23

That was my childhood too. Two of them side by side, you get weird mash/ice cream breasts on your plate.

Love51 · 16/10/2024 16:26

I do this. I enjoy it and it's great when you are feeding many kids. They are so busy admiring the pretty shape they don't whinge that a sibling has more than them.
I'm now wondering what else I do which might be considered psychopathic!

Heronatemygoldfish · 16/10/2024 16:28

They still do this in my work's canteen, though you'd have to be insane to eat the lumpy gloop mash.

Summertimer · 16/10/2024 16:28

I suppose they think they are getting a cheffy quenelle type shape 🤣

SlipperyLizard · 16/10/2024 16:28

My mum used to do this when I was a kid.

Last experience of it was 15 years ago having DD in hospital, the mash was one of the few edible meal items (double scoop for me, please).

MrsPostmanPat · 16/10/2024 16:28

My mother did this when I was a kid! Forgot all about it!

Fromage · 16/10/2024 16:28

Glacé cherry on top of each mound?

Also works on the ice cream tits.

Scampuss · 16/10/2024 16:29

If mash is scoopable and shapeable then it doesn't have enough butter and cream/milk in it.

TashaTudor · 16/10/2024 16:29

90s school dinners! I assume it was used to squash the dry cement dust they called mash together

itsgettingweird · 16/10/2024 16:29

Ha- another who immediately thought of school dinners in the 80's Grin

My mash potato is too soft to use a scoop. Unless the soup ladle I do use counts 🫣😂

OMGitsnotgood · 16/10/2024 16:30

I don't do it with potato but use an ice cream scoop for. making individual stuffing balls and for making sure I have the arm amount of batter in cup cake cases. Hope that is ok OP!!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 16/10/2024 16:31

I know this isn't AIBU, but YA very much NBU.
