Question about managed migration to universal credit

My partner is on ESA and we received a migration notice to move to UC. Do tax credits stop as soon as we set up the account to apply or does that happen when we press submit or equivalent? Sorry if this is a stupid question!

I waited until my payment day of tax credits then done it but I now owe the money back, but you can ask for advance payment of uc should you be left without money.

I'm sure more knowledgeable people will come along but was worried like you it would just stop.

They stop that day. So if you apply for UC on the Thursday and usually get your TC on a Friday you'll have to pay that Friday back. I just popped mine in a side account.
Although it is a NIGHTMARE trying to pay the money back. UC can't cope with organised people who just want to pay it back in one go. Took me about 4 months for them to let me do it.

So as soon as I start the application process, tax credits stop, as opposed to when I submit finalised application?

I think it will be when you submit the application but I’m not sure. There’s a help line number on your migration letter. Give them a phone and they’ll be able to tell you. I found them helpful

Thank you. I'll give them a call.

I started the application yesterday, but it will probably take a day or two to get info together and I just wondered how fast I need to be if I want to get the timing of my last tax credit payment to suit😆

Yes, it's when you hit submit.
My ID check at the job centre took another week so I actually had two Fridays of TC to pay back. But I knew that would be the case and put them aside.

Thanks. That's really helpful.
