Whats the oddest thing someone has stolen from you?

Reading this story about a door handle stolen from a cafe made me wonder what the oddest thing someone has stolen from you? I once had some of my homemade CDs stolen from me on a train. Why would you steal someone’s really obvious crappy homemade megamix with their felt-tip handwriting scrawl all over it? I hope it skipped for them on the good songs!

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cdjekzxj4y4o I hope they get their handles back!

Men in CCTV sought after cafe door handle theft

The cafe in Redfield had its door handles stolen hours before opening for the first time.

Lost dvd box set.

It wasn't that that was stolen, but by who and when. It was my brother in law who took it. At the time I was distracted packing a bag to return to my home town for a few days as he and my sister had come to let me know our mother had died. My sister was sat in expected distress on my sofa as he chose what dvds he'd like to take. He was such an upstanding member of society was Police Constable BIL.

We were moving and left a box of odds and ends on the grass next to the van we were loading. Had junk in it - odd saucers, bits of rubbish, flat ball etc. Turned round to pick it up to see someone making off with it. Saved us taking it to the recycling/rubbish dump later.

TheSnugHare · 15/10/2024 20:45

To add to this someone once broke in and stole a lighter

Oh another one! Our lovely neighbour had a beautiful garden she was always landscaping. One day she said she'd removed a viburnam bush and asked if we'd like it. We gratefully accepted. I got home from work and it was on our front path in a plastic plant carrier thing. I tried to shift it into the house (to take it through to back garden) but it was too heavy and decided to ask husband to help me when he got home. I had to go and get my son from nursery. I was gone literally 10mins and in that time someone nicked the bush!

As I said it was huge/ heavy and would have taken two people to shift it and a van to take it away. Someone must have spotted it earlier in the day and come back for it.

Garden bench. However, what was strange was that practically every house along my terrace has a garden bench, all tucked up against our houses, next to a path that we all share. Why did mine get taken rather than anyone else's?? And, yes, I did check.

Someone stole a pashmina type scarf from me in a restaurant once. It was really nice (although not valuable) and I’m still bitter about it!

RatMouseVole · 15/10/2024 20:49

Someone stole the stickers you put on your headlights to drive on the other side of the road, abroad. I'd put them on whilst waiting in the queue to board the ferry to France. By the time we came back to the car to disembark, they had gone. You can buy them on the ferry!

Onlyonekenobe · 15/10/2024 20:49

I don't know what they're called, but the plastic screw-on covers for the nozzle where you blow up your car tyres. Branded replacements would have cost us over 50 quid. Amazon rip off were 5 quid.

I reckon almost all of these weird things are because people have lost their own ones and are too tight to pay for replacements, or replacements aren't available (eg for tiny fiddly things). Or, they need a weapon or a container immediately for something. You have to think like someone who doesn't have anything.

Haven't clicked the article but I'm guessing that was someone with a grudge against whoever was starting up the cafe business?

Our wheelie bin went missing once.
It wasn't until I saw this thread , it has made me realize how many things we have had ' go missing ' or stolen over the years.

My empty lunch box at Cannon Street Station. Literally saw someone running off with it

Was it a particularly nice lunchbox?! My Little Pony? Star Wars?

Doubledded123 · 15/10/2024 20:51

In my hotel room in Kenya. Mycheddar from the fridge and some sandals. A Kenyan cleaner had a nice toasty that week whilst wearing my comfy trekking shoes, bastards.

My Guinea Pigs 😢. When I went to uni I took them with me and put the hutch in the Garden. Came back one day and they were gone.

That's awful! I'm sorry. 🥺 Poor piggies. 😢

Well this will out me if my former friend is on MN but hey ho. Many years ago I saved up some money to buy makeup from a new line created by Imam, the late David Bowie’s wife. After I’d bought a load of stuff I went to visit a friend, Jane, who lived near the shopping centre I had visited. At the end of the evening I jumped in a taxi and as soon as it left Jane’s house I realised I’d left the bag with all my makeup in her front room. I distinctly remembered it was on her coffee table. I messaged her but she insisted she couldn’t find it and long story short, I never saw it again.

Fast forward a few months, I had purchased the items again. A mutual friend of both me and Jane came to visit me and saw the Iman makeup in my bathroom. She said “oh, Jane has those exact same items as well” as she had been to her house the week before. The bizarre part: the make-up was for primarily for Black women and Jane is Irish, one of the palest women I know. She would have zero use for the makeup (and this all happened before online selling was a thing so she wouldn’t have taken it with a view to selling online). So bizarre.

Good thread OP. The snowman getting nicked 😂 and the Baby bel story very funny. My late DM had a life size plastic bird of prey to scare off the pigeons on her roof that got nicked. I had a Saturday job in a cafe when young and a customer ran off with a bowl of sugar from the table.

Whatsitreallylike · 15/10/2024 20:54

Someone once broke into our shed and stole an axe. Nothing else. The door was wide open on the morning and I saw muddy footprints in the grass (is was very wet!) and footprints going up the fence where he’d obviously climbed out of the garden.

I called the police just to let them know that our axe was stolen in case it was used in a murder somewhere, I didn’t want us implicated if they traced it back to us 😂😂

JontyGentoo · 15/10/2024 20:54

Someone broke into my car when I still lived at home and stole an empty handbag and CDs but dumped them at the top of the road. Weirdly however they left a Peter Andre’s cassette single of Mysterious Girl in my car that did not belong to me. 😆

Tweensandterribletwos · 15/10/2024 20:54

The leftover spag bol in the fridge

They are honest in Spain though .

Dh thought he'd lost his golf shoes and didn't think anymore about it
Went back to the changing rooms at the golf club he was a member of many weeks later and the shoes were still on the bench not even been moved or touched.

Unicorntastic · 15/10/2024 20:57

All from my old Corsa at varying times,
The original aerial
Dust caps off the tyres (kids for their bikes)
And once someone smashed the window to take a carton of juice and a cereal bar.

I'm sure there's a ladybird book about that.

I'm sure it's a Tom and Jerry cartoon!
