How the f*ck do you take a flattering selfie when you are 50+

I'm in an interesting place for work - an art gallery in Liverpool- and I just took a selfie to send to dd who is interested in where I am going.

God I look bloody awful, about 10 years older than normal, grey roots, fat. Surely there's a knack to this? A filter? I'm sure I don't look this bad in real life i hope

Arm stretched out, elbow slightly bent, phone up high, above your eyeline hold it away from your body/head, like out to the side slightly, if your right handed put our arm out to the right side of your face and lift it up, get something in the background and to the left of you, look UP at the camera to eliminate double chins or nostril shots and smile, keep clicking whilst smiling, grinning, looking pensive.
Sit on a bench and delete any gruesome shots 😁
Good luck

Bluevelvetsofa · 14/10/2024 16:39

In my experience, you take loads from different Nile’s, with different expressions, until there’s one that doesn’t make you look like a witch. Then you delete all the rest.

TheStroppyFeminist · 14/10/2024 16:40

Your kids won't care but FWIW, good lighting, high up angle, filter but not overly so it doesn't look like you.

MouseofCommons · 14/10/2024 16:40

Lighting. Daylight and a flash. Slightly higher than the face.

Seagall · 14/10/2024 16:52

Getting some strange looks, but have found one which looks acceptable.

What filter?? I'm on a Samsung phone and I don't think they have any 😄

Not sure about 'high up angle' it can make it look like you have a very large head and a small body.
Somewhat similar to a Tyrannosaurus Rex (but without being green)

Sethera · 14/10/2024 16:53

You need a phone with a low res selfie cam! Mine look great because it's only 5mp!

caffelattetogo · 14/10/2024 16:55

Use a portrait mode if you have one.

Seagall · 14/10/2024 16:56

Ooh what does that do

OP posts:
Fordian · 14/10/2024 16:59

My iPhone has a portrait mode which seems to change the depth of the focus so your face is in better proportion.

PennyFarthingRider · 14/10/2024 17:01

Black and white! My author photos take a decade off me.

TheFormidableMrsC · 14/10/2024 17:17

If I take a selfie I put the camera slightly above me. I'm not keen on filters because I don't mind my 55 year old face and it's normal to have some ageing signs but I do sometimes change the light which doesn't change my face but brightens me up. I know people who filter so heavily they look like they're embalmed. It's not a good look. I do look after my skin and wear make up so that always helps.

DappledThings · 14/10/2024 17:25

Why not just take a picture of the interesting place? If I was in an interesting art gallery and wanted to send a picture of it to someone that's what I'd do. It wouldn't occur to me I should be in it.

I’ve never looked good in photos no matter what age I was. 😂
I avoid them at all costs.

Augustus40 · 14/10/2024 17:33

I have no idea how to filter but I hear it is ceasing on Facebook from January.

NewDogOwner · 14/10/2024 18:20

Hold the phone up high and tilt it down a little. Works wonders at making chins disappear.

GalaticalFarce · 14/10/2024 21:16

A friend made me pose for a selfie, look away and then take it. It worked quite well.

Game0fCrones · 14/10/2024 21:19

I take the contrast levels down - hides all the shadows and crevices. 😁

Cynic17 · 14/10/2024 21:32

Why do you need to take a selfie? Just send your daughter pictures of where you are - she knows what you like, so she doesn't need to see you in the pics. I've never taken a selfie in my life because they're utterly pointless.

Presumably because she wanted to. Just because you, a stranger, thinks they are utterly pointless doesn't change that.

Deliberately coming on to her thread about selfies to tell her that her sending a picture to her own daughter is utterly pointless is also utterly pointless.

It was technical advice she was seeking. Not your utterly pointless judgement.

I guess we are all different!
