Kemi badenoch now against autistic children

Hunnymonster1 · 14/10/2024 13:30

What is wrong with her? Just read that the children commision is saying average wait like to get diagnosed as autistic is 4 years.
So kemi banging on about how parents are pushing gor diagnosis because they see how much extra money etc autistic children get at school is wrong.
The fact is I woukd think judging by lbc many kids are not getting the support that they need.
So js this about her saying the conservatives need to save tax by not helping people or children with autism and mental health issues.
Bare in mind she said similar about maternity pay last week makes me think she's like Liz truss wants to cut alot of stuff
How the hell can anyone support this?

In the pamphlet hat she's printed it conflates autism with the same as anxiety and it's not

On average it takes 4 years to get an autism diagnosis so if your child has been diagnosed as autistic by a professional then they must be autistic

@Hunnymonster1 , so you don’t believe that misdiagnosis can occur? Some presentations could be attributed to various causes. It’s extremely important that we investigate the phenomenal rise in Autism diagnosis for the sake of the children.

That's because she's stupid as well as cruel.

Since it takes 4 tears on average to get diagnosed is it mire autistic cases or maybe peope are aware I believe i would have been diagnosed with something as a kid looking back now but I am 44 and people didn't. I remember going to school with a few that prob now would be diagnosed

@Hunnymonster1 , I haven’t read exactly what Kemi said but I do believe there are some parents who for a variety of reasons seek to label their children as autistic. This is not good for society as a whole and especially not for the children concerned. I have reached this conclusion after conversations with medical doctors.

How many medical doctors? 200? 700? 10,000?

I still boil with rage, even now (DS is 15 & autistic) at the message his primary school headteacher sent to all parents stating that it was her belief that parents were too quick to seek a diagnosis of ASD or ADHD for their child and should just accept that their child is just a little quirky and get on with life. She meant there would be no help or support at school from anyone and if you didn't agree, you could just remove your child and go elsewhere. I don't understand how she's still there, still unofficially showing children the door, supported by her unsympathetic staff.

Same with us; I used to get told this too plus the usual crap of being told I was an anxious mother who couldn't parent very well. School couldn't or wouldn't see how difficult life was for my son and daughter and so I sought a NHS diagnosis without them and I am so glad I did. The NHS diagnosis was difficult and confirmed the challenges they faced (and still face as adults). But even then school rejected the NHS report and refused to support them which in the end compounded my children's difficulties. My son in particular ended up with a life threatening condition and was too traumatised to go back to school for years. I have never forgiven them for that and shame on Badenock for taking a similar approach. She has no idea what she is talking about.

She is talking to the Tory Party - MPs and the wider membership in the country. She is not addressing the general public.

Among her target audience there will be many who think that diagnoses of autism ( and other special needs anxiety, ADHD etc) have become too common and that some parents and schools are keen to label children because it
a. gets them more money/time in exams
b. excuses inadequate parenting.

I imagine that message will go down well with many in the party.

How so, do Tories have fewer autistic people or children within their party?

I think it's probably both re number of cases and also awareness. I agree with the comment that there were kids in my primary school who definitely would have a diagnosis or be on the pathway to one. I'm 47, so not far off you in age.

Part of the assessment process is ruling out other causes. I had an assessment for anxiety, depression, BPD, bipolar, OCD, PTSD, and others I can't remember as part of my autism assessment.

If schools got extra funding for kids who have a diagnosis of autism we’d be swimming in money.

A diagnosis of autism brings zero extra funding to schools.

At one point there was a survey of teachers who thought that parents were trying to push for unwarranted diagnosis.

tbh though I can imagine ADHD can be confused with neglectful parenting but I’m not sure how autism can (have autistic children in my family).

Parents pushing for special needs diagnosis for children, survey says

YouGov poll finds some parents are pushing for SEN statements to help their children, while others slip through the net

Exactly just heard one mum on lbc very upset she's waiting over 2 years for a diagnosis and her kid won't communicate to school apart from using cards sad

@Hunnymonster1 what do 'medical doctors' have to do with it?
I don't think that they're going to all be experts in autism, are they?
Or are you saying that you have had many many conversations with autism experts who all agree that people are fraudulently claiming that their child is autistic? Really?

So she doesn't support womens rights, doesn't support parents and has completely ignorant views about what happens when your child receives an autism diagnosis. Love to know how having an autism diagnosis equals an economic advantage when schools do not get extra funding just because a child has a diagnosis, you don't automatically get benefits because you have an autism diagnosis and when those children eventually turn into adults there is the rather depressing statistic that only 30% of adults with autism are in work. It's also very tiring hearing earlier posters once again equating autism with badly behaved children and poor parenting. Not everyone with autism is badly behaved - just as not everyone who is badly behaved has autism

I believe it's well documented that females with autism are often misdiagnosed with BPD because of the overlap in symptoms and the bias in autism diagnosis towards male presentation.

Firstly anxiety isn't neurodiverse totally different yet she does say that it's the same i am not lieing......

The section specifically references autism and anxiety, stating that people diagnosed with these conditions get “economic advantages and protections” not given to their peers.
“If you have a neurodiversity diagnosis (e.g. anxiety, autism)

There yiu go at the end anxiety isn't neurodiverse

Either way, the point of the thread was to criticise Badenoch for her misogynistic and ablist views. Does anyone know Jenrick's views on those specific points?

Not that I imagine any of us are in a position to vote for the leader for obvious reasons.

Frowningprovidence · 14/10/2024 14:35

The pamphlets wording is rather awful.

It does imply she doesn't like the disability bit of the equalities act at all.
It also suggests that it's an economic advantage to go to a special school.

‘Low demand’ parenting can be very effective with autistic children but possibly looks like we have just abandoned all concept of applying boundaries/rules to unwitting/unsympathetic observers…

My DD's teachers all thought I was one of those parents. The school nurse agreed with them. The school doctor also agreed but did say he recognised that he could be wrong so was watching with interest.

After having a full, year long assessment she got a formal diagnosis. The consultant was a specialist in autism in girls. He said that he knew what the outcome would be within 5 minutes of meeting her.

Lots of teachers think they know what autism looks like but they really don't. They know what a certain presentation of autism looks like and that's it.
