Towns or villages in East or south east which looks lovely at Christmas?

Hello,

I'm looking for a pretty town or village in either the south east or the east which looks magical at Christmas. Somewhere with lots of twinkly lights, book shops. That kind of clichéd thing! Must have a hotel in the middle to see lights from. Thank you!

Winchester is pretty nice around Christmas. Or Rye?

All the Wealden villages (Tenterden etc) look adorable in winter but there is fuck all to do in any of them. You could visit Bodiam castle or something though.

Oh yes have been to Winchester and agree! Actually have been to tenterten too but not in the winter, both there and Rye are good shouts! Don't really need there to be much more than a bed and pub. Thanks for replying

Thank you, agree Holt is very pretty. No lights switch on this year!

Henley on Thames always looks lovely at Christmas.

I think there is a lights switch on date but it's being organised differently, more by local businesses coming together rather than the mass affair it had become in recent years, so no road closures, I'm assuming no fireworks, stage etc.

If you're after a big switch on event though this one probably won't fit the bill

Stamford in Lincolnshire
It's very popular though so probably too late to find somewhere to stay.

Dazzlerazzlee · 14/10/2024 10:53

Thanks, I'll look at Henley and Stamford!

Yeah, I wasn't totally sure from the website. Not really after a big event and tbh it's crazy in Holt on switch on day (we are localish) Holt is perfect but we've been there before.

Guildford is nice at Christmas, helps that it still has quite a traditional high street with all the old buildings.

AI (atrocious intelligence) says:

Bath, Somerset

Rye, East Sussex:

Wells, Somerset

Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk

Winchester, Hampshire

Great ideas, thank you!
