I need a hobby. Can you tell me about yours?

My kids are getting easier now they are a milder and can get themselves to after school activities so I have more time.

I am not sporty. Or dance-y. Or yoga-y

I don’t want to spend too much money or get too much equipment.

I do like crafts. I am more enthusiastic than skilful. Can crochet. Can’t knit.

I like board games and things like poker. Don’t like fantasy type role play things.

Any ideas?

I enjoying gaming on my Nintendo Switch. I play easy going, tycoon/open world type games, no stress, do what I like. Can do it in my pjs in bed drinking a cider too.

I do cross stitch. I draw a picture, or whatever, transfer it onto square paper, then make it. I don't like following pre-made kits.

I've done QR codes, TV/film related stuff, a dalek serving a cup of tea for my sister, simple snowflakes to turn into Christmas cards, small b/w Bauhaus inspired wall hanging, 9 Dragonballs for my friend's son.... Nothing huge, nothing overly complicated.

They do take hours though! I finished a nutcracker earlier in the year, fur myself, that took over 40 hours! But it's framed and I'll keep.it forever.

And swimming, I like swimming.

Gardening (although that tends to come naturally; if you own a garden you’ll know if gardening is your thing)
Cooking (and eating)
First aid and prehospital care-types of things

wulves · 13/10/2024 16:44

These days just Switch & J-Dramas.

EngineEngineNumber9 · 13/10/2024 16:45

I always suggest this, but cryptic crosswords!

I’m currently honing my biscuit baking and icing skills so I can make personalised ones to give people at Christmas.

Writing. One easy way to get started is to rewrite short stories by authors you like. Then add more of your own ideas as you get better at the actual writing part.

I sea swim year round, take Tai Chi classes, go on drystone walling weekends, go to two different book groups, and an arthouse film fortnightly event where they run a film and there's a chance to talk about it afterwards over a glass of wine. Other things I've done have been printmaking workshops, art history evening classes, climbing, yoga, and helping out a community arts organisation with making floats and puppets for street theatre.

Gardening, I have an allotment too

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 13/10/2024 16:49

More of a project than a hobby, but I like sorting through my digital photo collection and creating photo albums to order (I use photobox), I’ve got squillions of photos though.

I also do strength based fitness at home, though that requires equipment. I’m not especially sporty, but I do it for good health in later life.

do you like cooking/baking? Try out cooking different cuisines?

set up a book club?

jigsaws?

Rescue dogs. Train them. Walk them. Your life will never be the same (or your own) again..

Another vote for writing. Inexpensive and endlessly creative. I've been doing it since my teens and I'm in my fifties now and never get bored of it.

@tweddler I like your idea of rewriting existing short stories! Think I'm going to give that a go.

clawmachine · 13/10/2024 16:52

Macrame might be good if you're looking to learn a new craft, it can be as simple or complex as you like and you can make useful stuff

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 13/10/2024 16:52

I'm a Scout Leader

I had no scouting skills at all when I started. I've learned loads and made a great circle of friends.

I’d have to live to 110 to clear the backlog of photos. Just can’t do it. When I’ve gone no doubt most will go in the bin!

mondaytosunday · 13/10/2024 17:07

I crochet and just had two step grandchildren born this month so I'm making two baby blankets. Son has requested a beanie in his footie team colours, and dad wants a snood and fingerless gloves! So a hobby with practical uses!
I'm also taking a Japanese loom weaving course starting November, and hope to do stained glass one but that's not til April

This sounds interesting and I assume other groups need leaders too?

Biscuitandacuppa · 13/10/2024 17:20

Cross stitch, knitting and crochet. I also have been interested in History all my life and have just started a History degree with the OU!

TentEntWenTyfOur · 13/10/2024 17:23

I collect vintage brooches. You can always find them at boot sales and craft fairs, they don't cost much and don't take up a lot of room either.

I'm also interested in geology, rocks, stones & crystals and you can pick nice ones up literally from under your feet.

Octavia64 · 13/10/2024 17:24

Duolingo.

Last year I learnt Spanish for a holiday in Spain.

This year I'm planning to swim in the Rhine in the annual swim the Rhine day in Basel so I'm learning German.

Lindtnotlint · 13/10/2024 17:24

Needle felting is fun and creates surprisingly awesome output for not much deep skill. Adult colouring. Playing co-operative board games like Pandemic with DH.

MaidOfSteel · 13/10/2024 17:27

Family tree. It can get a bit expensive if you really get drawn in, buy you could get a subscription for less than £20 a month.

It's an interesting that has held my attention for more than 5 years now. I love it.
