I need a hobby. Can you tell me about yours?

My kids are getting easier now they are a milder and can get themselves to after school activities so I have more time.

I am not sporty. Or dance-y. Or yoga-y

I don’t want to spend too much money or get too much equipment.

I do like crafts. I am more enthusiastic than skilful. Can crochet. Can’t knit.

I like board games and things like poker. Don’t like fantasy type role play things.

Any ideas?

I make cards for a local charity. They provide the materials (although I do tend to buy more!). Crafting and volunteering at the same time.

Singleandproud · 13/10/2024 17:34

I do dance workouts at home just type "Dance workout..." And your favourite musician and the chances are there's a workout for it. It's fun and good for improving my physical activity as I WFH. And unlike a class there's no one judging/watching you.

Procrastination

Knitting/crochet - the thing that made it better for me was joining a knit and natter group, mine meets two Monday evenings a month (which I go to) but also Tuesday lunchtime and Wed morning. I get to chat a bit, see different techniques and patterns and can get help or help others. We have done some community knit projects too which is nice to be part of.

My hobby is leatherwork. I make purses, and covers for notebooks, keyrings and multiple card wallets.

I used to sell my work but now I only make things for school fairs, raffle and tombola prizes.

It doesn't take many tools to get started and you can buy pieces of leather on eBay or Amazon.

I love cross-stitch and growing veg.

Can’t say DH’s though, it’s too outing 😜

Learn an instrument. The Internet can teach you guitar up to a bashing out a song and singing along standard.

Running/ cycling/ gym. I'm envious of all the people in my gym who have time to go to lots of classes, because they all get to know each other.

Learn to sew or do pottery then get on one of the programmes.

I write history blogs for a local historical site - love history so it's perfect for me and cheap!

DieDreiHexen · 13/10/2024 17:46

I sing in our local choir which has given me so much pleasure, and friends of all ages. It's just a fib, positive hour every week.

Aside from that, I swim, do Pilates, love to cook, garden a bit and love travelling so spend lots of time planning our holidays.

ButterAsADip · 13/10/2024 17:48

Singing fits the bill. Soooooooooo good for your health too!

Local choir
singing lessons
RockChoir
singing alone at home
open mics

there’ll be loads of stuff locally assuming you’re not in the sticks!

Hohofortherobbers · 13/10/2024 17:52

Pool. Its not difficult to get good enough to impress, I love the pool hall.🎱

YesIJudge · 13/10/2024 17:52

Photography. Used to be an expensive hobby but after the initial outlay of a great digital camera, it's not these days. There's a great online community too.

Latenightreader · 13/10/2024 17:55

I make miniature rooms. I've loved them since I was small and my mother bought me a Rolife kit for my last birthday (a bookshop) and I also have a detective agency and a book nook. Really satisfying! I'm planning on attempting my own creation rather than going from a kit next time.

My Dd is in her first year at university and my Dh works away .I work 3 days a week but i’ve been looking for things to keep me occupied when I’m on my own
I enjoy going to the gym I swim a couple of times a week and do a few classes and use the treadmill and rowing machine most days
I’ve just joined a local walking group and also a local litter picking group
I enjoy researching my family tree , word searches ,reading , researching places to visit for holidays and listening to podcasts especially true crime

YourLimeLurker · 13/10/2024 17:58

Needle felting.
It is so relaxing and I love the smell of raw wool.

quirkychick · 13/10/2024 17:58

Duolingo too, revisited French and Italian, started Spanish and Greek. I watch foreign language stuff on Netflix to help (that's my excuse, anyway)
I also do yoga and weights at home - for health
Playing music - piano and flute
Some drawing, when I have time

A neighbour taught herself to spin with a spinning wheel, when she retired. She also is a keen florist and does wreath-making workshops for neighbours at Christmas.

Decluttering. It’s free! And improves your living space so much. Gives one a high.

YellowphantGrey · 13/10/2024 18:00

I walk with an audibook on. I'm lucky to leave near a huge park so I put on a weighted vest and walk for an hour and a half one way then back again. I do that 4 days a week.

I go to the gym 4 days a week for 45 mins each time for weightlifting.

I collect books, I read books, I go to my bookclub twice a month. It's a silent one and I love it

I do jigsaws

Book journalling.

Attelina · 13/10/2024 18:03

For you - macrame.

Xtraincome · 13/10/2024 18:06

Hi OP. Congrats on reaching that parenting phase where you can claw back some time- I'm a few years off it still.

I write, just finished my MA though so it's a future career plan really. Crochet, cooking new dishes, trying new fitness classes (active ones like spin, HIIT) in between my regular gym and walking.

I really want to get into scrapbooking. I loved it when young and now it's blown up as this crazy trendy hobby and the things available are amazing. I am going to incorporate it into some journaling and creative note making for my stories. It helps my imagination and I can't draw for toffee.

Could you please share your weightlifting routine? I am trying to incorporate 15 minutes into my gym session. I do machines but would like variety with free weights Or even just a link to your weightlifting inspo would be greatly appreciated!

Gardening. Writing fiction. Reading. History stuff.

CruisingDuck · 13/10/2024 18:10

Lego - the 18+ adult sets and big jigsaws (1k and 2k pieces), although was given a 3k!

Rainallnight · 13/10/2024 18:10
