I need a hobby. Can you tell me about yours?

My kids are getting easier now they are a milder and can get themselves to after school activities so I have more time.

I am not sporty. Or dance-y. Or yoga-y

I don’t want to spend too much money or get too much equipment.

I do like crafts. I am more enthusiastic than skilful. Can crochet. Can’t knit.

I like board games and things like poker. Don’t like fantasy type role play things.

Any ideas?

Researching your family tree? Fossil hunting, metal detecting, magnet fishing?

caringcarer · 13/10/2024 18:13

I like decorating cupcakes to make them look like flowers. It takes so much practice.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 13/10/2024 18:16

Reading with interest..

I have been contemplating for years buying a sewing machine and doing a dressmaking class. Some day I will!

I love books and after being frustrated at no clubs near me, I set up my own. I invited only the cul de sac and got 3 people. We've since branched to 5 and that's enough. It's not just about reading. I've also created a monthly meet up in the pub mid week where I have 2 drinks and a laugh.

Jewellery making. Chain or beads or a mixture of both. You can give them away as presents when you get good at it, or even start a small business online

BluebirdBoogie · 13/10/2024 18:16

Also Lexulous app (slightly different version of Scrabble) is really good. It costs 79p a month, no adverts, no annoying pop-ups, just straightforward playing.

Could you please share your weightlifting routine? I am trying to incorporate 15 minutes into my gym session. I do machines but would like variety with free weights Or even just a link to your weightlifting inspo would be greatly appreciated!

I'm hoping that works? I basically follow her on Instagram. I started by picking one of her routines and a weight I was comfortable with and do it for a week. I did this for 6 routines then started again with a heavier weight and so on.

My gym also does classes and one of them is a weights class

Wonderful! Weights classes are not available at my gym which is disappointing. Thanks for the link. Will try to get a new routine in this coming week

Agility/dog sports if you have or like dogs! You'll never be bored again there's always something to try 😂

MeMyCatsAndI · 13/10/2024 18:45

Singing fits the bill. Soooooooooo good for your health too!

Local choir
singing lessons
RockChoir
singing alone at home
open mics

there’ll be loads of stuff locally assuming you’re not in the sticks!

Yes, I’ve been to a few Rock choir workshops and they were so much fun!

I also do YouTube Karaoke 😃

Bell ringing.

No experience or strength required - grannies do it - no need even to be Christian. Go along to your local tower and learn this uniquely British skill.

RoseJam · 13/10/2024 19:27

A few ideas that I have dabbled with -

Baking (it's amazing what you can create with simple store cupboard ingredients)
Polymer clay modelling
Lego for adults
Adult Colouring
Art (haven't done it since school and not that good, but so is most of the class. Some adult courses run in the evening and lay on drinks and nibbles even)
Mahjong
Volunteering (feels nice to give something back and there are lots of areas to get into from kids activities to soup kitchens)
Crochet
Assist with puppy training classes for Dogs Trust

Give it something that takes your interest a go and see where it goes!

OVienna · 13/10/2024 19:27

Seconded!

Though I think it's more an English thing, and if the OP is outside England there may not be a tower nearby with bells hung for method ringing.

MrsHamlet · 13/10/2024 19:33

Stained and fused glass. I have some equipment at home and I love it - I go to a class once a week.

MyEarringsAreGreen · 13/10/2024 19:36

Singing! There is no greater joy than singing in harmony with others. The likes of Rock Choir/Funky Voices don't require you to ever audition or sing on your own. It's a great mood improver!

Itssodark · 13/10/2024 19:40

Coloured pencils and watercolours - you can find good online courses and although equipment can be expensive mid range stuff can still get good results.

Table tennis- although active involves less running than actual tennis. Walking club.

Baital · 13/10/2024 19:56

Bobbin lace bookmarks, the youtube walks you through it bonitolace

martinisforeveryone · 13/10/2024 20:00

I suggest photography.

You can join a class to learn more, or just do a journal type project on your own.
Also suggest photographing a specific project topic, something that grabs you. The possibilities are endless.

I do cross stitch. I draw a picture, or whatever, transfer it onto square paper, then make it. I don't like following pre-made kits.

I've done QR codes, TV/film related stuff, a dalek serving a cup of tea for my sister, simple snowflakes to turn into Christmas cards, small b/w Bauhaus inspired wall hanging, 9 Dragonballs for my friend's son.... Nothing huge, nothing overly complicated.

They do take hours though! I finished a nutcracker earlier in the year, fur myself, that took over 40 hours! But it's framed and I'll keep.it forever.

And swimming, I like swimming.

This is a brilliant idea! I love stitching blackwork but never thought of doing a QR code. Thanks for the suggestion. Smile Is there a resource you could recommend for designing them?

But how do you learn to sing? I'd love to learn but I think you need at least a little natural ability which can be polished, and I don't have any natural ability 😭

PippyPip · 13/10/2024 20:35

I’m currently doing a 12 week language course and will keep going with it once it’s done ☺️

I’d love to learn how to throw pottery, I’ve looked up a course but I’m not sure if it will become a hobby as it’s quite expensive!

I've sung all my life.

I think the vast, vast majority of people who think they can't learn to sing actually can. A few people genuinely are tone-deaf. More people just don't have the confidence because singing can make one very self-conscious, particularly as it's become sadly very rare to sing, and lots of people get put off by unkind remarks.

As with all things it takes practice and at the start you have to remember that you will improve in time.
