Do you believe a house can have an ominous presence? If so, why?

My husband and I were discussing the feeling of our new house compared to our old house. The house we live in now was built in the 60s so isn't new, but we both feel really comfortable here.

We moved here a year ago, and before that were in the previous house 8 years whilst we saved. House was small and run down, rent was cheap.

It was an old end terrace, originally housing wardens from the old prison across the road (now a house). It then housed poor families until the sixties, with one outdoor toilet at the top of the garden.

Once families started getting offered council housing, it was then renovated into 4 houses. The furthest from the road being mine.

Walking to and from my house we always felt a sense of foreboding. It always felt heavy and gloomy. It was beautiful to look at, all of the houses in our little court were - tucked away with beautiful red brick and very old fashioned. Sash windows, with a wonky roof. Steps into rooms, and walls weren't square, it had character.

At night, when I went to the loo, I didn't dare look towards the stairs. If I was staying there alone, I'd not sleep well and feel really scared. I couldn't even bring myself to look out of the window at night. I would constantly check on the children during the night.

Although I didn't ever see anything, I felt it. And I didn't realise I what I was feeling, until we moved to our current home and the vibe is so different. No negative feelings here.

Does anyone else live, or has lived in a spooky house?
