Beside me on the sofa, where he's been every night for the last 12 years. He just slept away an hour ago with his head on my lap. DH is working away and DD is away at uni. DS (20) is inconsolable. I kind of guessed this was coming as he's been a bit 'wandered' for a couple of weeks and very unsettled the last few days. I know some people will think this is pathetic but I took a days holiday yesterday because I was worried about him. I'm completely devastated and I don't know how to tell DD.

He's a chocolate lab and cost us a fortune over the years eating things he shouldn't and generally being a knobhead like most labs are but, my god, how we loved that boy. He is absolutely part of our family. I've wrapped him up and put him in his bed and DH is on his way home. I've had dogs all my life and my parents had dogs before they had us and I really didn't want another one for the very reason that I knew I would have my heart broken all over again.

I don't really expect a reply to this, I know not everyone likes dogs or understands how much they can mean to people. I just know that my children are going to feel the way that I did when we lost our first 'family' dog. The one that came on all the holidays and stole the birthday cakes and chewed the school shoes.

Our boy really was the goodest boy.

I'm so sorry for your loss, he sounds a lovely boy, and was clearly much loved by you all.

tolerable · 13/10/2024 02:30

@YesIJudge bless, (my then 3 year old ds2 epitaph for our macy girl was "her was a dog n poo'd out her bum in the garden-rest of day-she was just us") the hurts immense- because the love is. x

feathermucker · 13/10/2024 02:54

So sorry for your loss 😔

Deargodletitgo · 13/10/2024 05:40

What a lovely good boy. So sorry for your loss, I still cry about the loss of my bestest girl husky, it broke me. Sounds like he had the best life and left this world in his favourite place knowing he was loved.

johnson39 · 13/10/2024 05:50

Sorry for your loss Flowers sounds like he's had a wonder life with a lovely family, so glad he passed with you by his side that would have been a great comfort.
My thoughts are with you x

Lesina · 13/10/2024 05:53

Ah I am so sorry for your loss. He was gentle looking lad. It is utter wretched when they go. My thoughts are with you.

DreamyCyanFinch · 13/10/2024 05:58

Wishing you and your family strength.I have just discovered how wonderful dogs are over the last four years.
Your message made me teary, as I have two now, I understand how much you can love them.
Yes they are a lit of work but so good natured and loving mostly, I totaly understand.

You had each other for that short time, you found each other, that can never be taken awsy.So what if others don't understand(also had a cat I loved to distraction.)

Thinking of you!!!

Bestyearever2024 · 13/10/2024 05:58

So much love to you ❤️

Buildingthefuture · 13/10/2024 06:02

Oh op, I’m so sorry. Loosing them is always so, so awful. They are family. But honestly, he was in his happy place, with his head on his mum, totally peaceful. It must have been such a shock for you, but for him it was (if there can ever be such a thing) a “good” ending to a good life for the goodest of boys. Hugs to you and your family op xxx

Allthehorsesintheworld · 13/10/2024 06:03

I’m so sorry. But a peaceful, quiet ending with the person who loved him and he loved the most after a happy, active, naughty ( eating everything in and out of sight) Labrador life is the best a dog can have.
Run free over the Rainbow Bridge, lovely boy, you’ll meet again.

ReadWithScepticism · 13/10/2024 06:10

What a peaceful end for him. Dear old dog. xx

marmadukedoggo · 13/10/2024 06:29

My sympathies to you and your family. We have a choccie lab. Whirlwhinds of destruction combined with the nicest nature possible. Imposissible not to love. Have a lie down now your DH is home. x

Pogpog21 · 13/10/2024 06:29

I am so so sorry for your loss. Thinking of you all. He looked absolutely gorgeous. xxxxx

Franhollywood · 13/10/2024 06:33

So sorry for your loss OP. What a good life and a good death, he was as lucky to have you as you were to have him.

We invite people into our company, but our dogs are there in our solitude. It’s therefore a unique loss and I hope the smiles at his memory come quickly for you all.

doodleschnoodle · 13/10/2024 06:58

I'm so sorry, OP. What a life he had and the perfect way for him to go, drifting off beside the human he loved so much. I hope that's a comfort in the days and weeks ahead. Run free, lovely boy 🌈

Jifmicroliquid · 13/10/2024 07:04

I’m so sorry OP. What a gorgeous boy he was, and obviously so loved by your family.
Take care xx

LightSpeeds · 13/10/2024 08:13

Awwww, so sorry to hear this 💐

whiskeyarmadillo · 13/10/2024 08:27

I'm so sorry. What a good life he had. 🐾

Rosecoffeecup · 13/10/2024 08:27

What a beautiful old boy, and the most peaceful way for him to go. You will always have the memories of the joy he gave you.

Anisty · 13/10/2024 08:28

As i read your op last night, i had no idea that, hours later our 11 yr old dog would be rushed to vet at death's door. At the time he was in our garden with what we thought was a nasty bout of diarrhoea. Turned out to be pure blood.

Vet has told us he is unlikely to make it. Waiting for news now. Possible ruptured tumour.

I truly do understand your pain and send my condolences to you and your family.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/10/2024 08:31

I’m so sorry - I do know how horrible it is. 💐
How lovely that he was at home, with you, though.

Nap1983 · 13/10/2024 08:34

Im so sorry about your boy. Choc Labs are the best. Xx

bozzabollix · 13/10/2024 08:34

I am so sorry. Labradors are so gifted at making us love them. It hurts horribly when they go. What a way to go though, in his favourite place, head on lap, no awful decision to make for you. He did so well there.

I can’t stand them going to the point I have a succession strategy of different aged Labradors so we’re never without one, so I know the pain you’re going through. We lost our eldest at 15.5 last year after her legs gave out finally to arthritis. The kids were inconsolable for a few days. It’s the worst feeling. My heart goes out to you.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 13/10/2024 08:37

BrieHugger · 13/10/2024 02:15

Just remember that even if you didn’t have him long enough, he had you his whole life.

That's such a good way to put it.

DinnaeFashYerself · 13/10/2024 08:37

He sounds as if he was the bestest of boys, and the love you have for him shines through every word. Sending you all some hugs.
