Beside me on the sofa, where he's been every night for the last 12 years. He just slept away an hour ago with his head on my lap. DH is working away and DD is away at uni. DS (20) is inconsolable. I kind of guessed this was coming as he's been a bit 'wandered' for a couple of weeks and very unsettled the last few days. I know some people will think this is pathetic but I took a days holiday yesterday because I was worried about him. I'm completely devastated and I don't know how to tell DD.

He's a chocolate lab and cost us a fortune over the years eating things he shouldn't and generally being a knobhead like most labs are but, my god, how we loved that boy. He is absolutely part of our family. I've wrapped him up and put him in his bed and DH is on his way home. I've had dogs all my life and my parents had dogs before they had us and I really didn't want another one for the very reason that I knew I would have my heart broken all over again.

I don't really expect a reply to this, I know not everyone likes dogs or understands how much they can mean to people. I just know that my children are going to feel the way that I did when we lost our first 'family' dog. The one that came on all the holidays and stole the birthday cakes and chewed the school shoes.

Our boy really was the goodest boy.

Ohhh, he's gorgeous. I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers

Handsome boy. I’m so sorry. What a lucky dog to die at home and so comfortably and peacefully, with no long illness. Much nicer than being scared at the vets. Sending you a big hug.

Emliznoah · 13/10/2024 00:44

As a dog Mum I am just so sad for you .We love our dogs unconditionally ,but how lovely that he was at home with you , with his head on your lap rather than at the vets.
He had a wonderful life and death feeling loved .Xx

I’m so sorry for your loss, I lost my girl in January and I’m still not over it, a part of me died when she did, they are family members and their passing can be much harder than saying goodbye to human family members ( it is in my case anyway) glad your husband is on his way home, be kind to yourself over the next few days, he died on your lap which I’m sure was his plan, he knew he was loved right to the end x

Chickdaft · 13/10/2024 00:44

What a wonderful way for him. With his family and not at the vet for his final hours. So many pet lovers, me included so envy you that.
The pain of loss is yours now, but he had the best life.
so sorry x

CulturalNomad · 13/10/2024 00:44

I'm very sorry for your loss. Take comfort in the fact that he lived a good life surrounded by people who loved him.

Rantypanties · 13/10/2024 00:45

His little old man eyebrows! What a lovely soul. I’m sorry you’ve lost him, especially so quickly from when you thought something was wrong. I hope the good memories outweigh the sadness soon and that you can take some time to grieve one of your best friends 💔

I'm so so sorry for your loss. What a beautiful way for him to leave this world.

I lost my girl 6 weeks ago and I am still so sad about her going. She was also 12 and since she has gone out home feels so empty. I think of her as I wake and as I go to sleep

Sending you much love. It sounds like he was a lucky dog who was loved very much ❤️

Emliznoah · 13/10/2024 00:47

What a beautiful pic ,love his grey old man eyebrows Xx

I am so sorry for your loss. We are 5 months down the line after losing our beloved dog and it still hurts 💐

Hedgerow2 · 13/10/2024 00:53

Two of our labs have spent their final hours at the vet in pain and distress to this really was a very beautiful way for your handsome boy to go. And better for you and ds too.

I lost my old boy in January and think about him all the time so know how you are feeling.

YesIJudge · 13/10/2024 00:55

DH home now. Thank you so much for comforting me.

I’m sure you have an enormous space that he’s left. Sounds like you gave him a happy life and a peaceful death, that’s just wonderful.

rubeexxcube · 13/10/2024 00:56

I agree with a pp, a lovely death. A good death. And from the sounds of it, a beautiful life. I will hold my girl extra tight tonight and be thinking of you OP. x

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 13/10/2024 00:58

So sorry. We had to have our cat pts earlier this year due to a terrible unexpected cancer diagnosis, and I so wish she could have drifted off curled in my lap rather than go to the hated vet in the hated box. He looks lovely fella.

FloofyKat · 13/10/2024 00:59

I’m so sorry, those of us who have or have had pets understand that they become part of the family and when they leave us, they take a piece of our heart with them. Whoever said that grief is the price we pay for love was not wrong x

FranticFrankie · 13/10/2024 01:00

Beautiful boy 🤎❤️
Sorry for your loss

Pallisers · 13/10/2024 01:00

What a beautiful death for your lovely boy.

My dog is 14 and a half and that is exactly how he and I would want him to go.

thinking of you.

EconomyClassRockstar · 13/10/2024 01:02

I agree! What a lovely end to a much loved pup. We are nearing the end with ours and I genuinely hope the same thing happens, with his head on my lap. Sending love, OP as I know how big a hole in the family's heart they leave. ❤

Floralnomad · 13/10/2024 01:04

Sorry for your loss @YesIJudge 💐🐾

JRSKSSBH · 13/10/2024 01:04

I am so sorry for you. It is heartbreaking when they go. You sound like such a lovely dog owner. I am sure he had a wonderful life and it is so lovely that you took a day off work to be with him. God bless you. He died in his happy place. Take comfort from that. You gave him a super life. As a dog owner, you can’t do more.

AnnieMay55 · 13/10/2024 01:04

So sorry for all of you. We have it coming soon. It sounds the perfect passing, how any dog or human would want to go. I know it doesn't make it any easier for you but you didn't have to make that awful decision and call the vets. Take comfort that he was snuggled up safely with you and just drifted away so peacefully.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/10/2024 01:05

Awww love those eyebrows , bless him.

He was where he wanted to be , on the sofa with you , when he slipped away . Calm , settled . His time to go . .

My parents old dog was euthanised (years ago) while she was under sedation for a diagnostic , the Vet said if he found something then he wanted permission to do this . She went in happy , she loved the Vet , so her last memory was a positive one .
Hard on the ones left behind . She was a yellow lab, greedy little crittter , retired Guide Dog.

Doesn;t get easier does it ?

IIRC that was a Paul O'Grady words of wisdom.
