Beside me on the sofa, where he's been every night for the last 12 years. He just slept away an hour ago with his head on my lap. DH is working away and DD is away at uni. DS (20) is inconsolable. I kind of guessed this was coming as he's been a bit 'wandered' for a couple of weeks and very unsettled the last few days. I know some people will think this is pathetic but I took a days holiday yesterday because I was worried about him. I'm completely devastated and I don't know how to tell DD.

He's a chocolate lab and cost us a fortune over the years eating things he shouldn't and generally being a knobhead like most labs are but, my god, how we loved that boy. He is absolutely part of our family. I've wrapped him up and put him in his bed and DH is on his way home. I've had dogs all my life and my parents had dogs before they had us and I really didn't want another one for the very reason that I knew I would have my heart broken all over again.

I don't really expect a reply to this, I know not everyone likes dogs or understands how much they can mean to people. I just know that my children are going to feel the way that I did when we lost our first 'family' dog. The one that came on all the holidays and stole the birthday cakes and chewed the school shoes.

Our boy really was the goodest boy.

I loved my yellow lab and miss him everyday - even though 10 years have passed since he left us. I have tears in my eyes thinking about where you are.

Your beautiful chocolate lab loved and was loved. The bastids both ruin your life with terrible ever-puppy behaviour and enrich it woth perpetual optimism, energy and kindness.

May he rest in peace. Love to the family at this time.

Such a handsome old man. So gentle and didn't have a bad bone in his body.

What a Boy. What a Boy. He’s just beautiful. I’m so so sorry for your loss.

He must have felt so comfortable with you as he took his last breath whilst leaning on you. He knew he was safe and loved.

gillefc82 · 13/10/2024 01:13

Sending lots of hugs @YesIJudge. We lost our Cypriot rescue dog less than a month before his 3rd birthday. He’d blessed our lives for only 2.5 years.

He became suddenly very sick and within a few days was hospitalised, being treated and then we were told it was acute kidney failure and there was nothing more they could do.

We couldn’t bare the thought of him dying on a cold metal table at the vets, so we decided to take him home and got to spend a precious day and night with him before they made a house visit on the Monday morning to put him to sleep.

Take comfort that he slipped away peacefully, feeling loved and safe, cuddled up to the people he loved most.

I’ve lost close members of my family before but can honestly say nothing’s broken me like losing him. 2.5 years on and I will still sometimes get choked up thinking about him. But more often, I’ll remember something that makes me smile, makes me laugh and makes me grateful that while we didn’t have him in our lives for a long time, we gave him a safe, loving home, he knew he was adored and he made our world so much brighter.

Please make sure you let yourself grieve. I took a week off work as I was in no state to face anything/anybody. You may have people who will be confused by your upset and think why, it’s just a dog. But you already know, they are so much more than that. And remembering how special that bond is will get you through.

RIP to your lovely handsome boy. Run free over the rainbow bridge little man, my Logie will be there to welcome you and join you in some zoomies 🌈😘

Those eyes 🤎

I’ve still not gotten over my wee amazing rescue border collie who we lost 14 years ago. Could never have another pet because letting her go was too hard. It sounds so pathetic but I still imagine her as my doggy guardian angel when luck shines on me.

thaegumathteth · 13/10/2024 01:25

I'm so sorry OP. Dogs are such a part of the family it's devastating when they go I'm glad he had a 'nice' passing

We lost our 13 yr old cocker a wee while ago and my daughter especially was hysterical as she couldn't remember life without him. It's settled though and now we can share memories of him like the times he got stuck down the side of the fridge, twice. In one affernoon

I’m so sorry to hear of your awful loss. It’s the worst grief ever when your beloved pet died. And even more traumatising is that he died next to you. So terribly tragic sad.
my cat was cremated last week at a wonderful pet crematorium and this was an important day for me.

OnePeachCrow · 13/10/2024 01:31

I am so sorry for your loss. We lost our lovely boy in January ans even though we now have a puppy, I still cry when I think of him. Sending hugs.

I am ao sorry for the loss of your friend 💔

Niceeyessweetheart · 13/10/2024 01:36

I'm so sorry. I can feel your grief. Your boy sounds beautiful.

We nearly lost our 12 year old lab last weekend but we've been given a reprieve for which I am so grateful. They truly are a member of the family. For me it also represented the shift of time. Our boy has been there whilst our kids have grown. He's the only dog that they've all known and with one now at uni and the others also at varying stages of teenager hood, it felt like the end of an era.

Lots of love to you and your family.

I'm so sorry to read OP at least he passed away on your lap, happy and comfortable. Bitter but the best way for a pet to go I think.
Very hard night / week ahead for you but we are all holding your hand. They really are family.

X

Healthyalltheway · 13/10/2024 02:09

oh he was beautiful - what a gentleman😍 . They are such a big part of our lives and have a special place in our heart. Never, be sad that you had him, that he had you and your family to love him and that you were together. Mourn his loss but how wonderful he found you and you found him. Dogs ( and all pets) are just wonderful and bring so much joy, love and happiness. I am here in tears in bed ( different timezone) with my doggie next to me and feel your pain xx

Pudmyboy · 13/10/2024 02:10

So sorry for your loss @YesIJudge and I join with all the previous posters in saying what a lovely, loving way to go, snuggled up warm and cosy on your lap, peaceful and quiet, at home with all familiar smells and sounds around him. Your instinct to spend the day with him shows how much in tune with him you were. Be gentle with yourself and each other. Please keep us updated if you want to 💐

SayithowitisYorkie · 13/10/2024 02:14

I’m so very sorry. Sending you heaps of hugs and love

BrieHugger · 13/10/2024 02:15

Just remember that even if you didn’t have him long enough, he had you his whole life.
