Less people using and posting on Facebook or just my friend list? I ?

gone so quiet now. After pandemics it seems less and less people are using it or just not anymore. I've asked a couple of friends and they say it's just boring now.

OP posts:

However mum and her friends love it! They talk for hours about who “liked” what and who didn’t “like” a post. It’s very funny

Bizarre

Fundays12 · 13/10/2024 08:11

I find it awful now as it's so full of adverts I can't actually use it for the purpose I set it up for.

MouseofCommons · 13/10/2024 08:11

My feed is full up of random groups I have no interest in. I don't care about butterfly spotters in South Wales or funny memes from Newcastle. And just because I do parkrun I have no interest in other parkruns. Whenever I look at fb I spend a minute hiding all the crap then lose interest in scrolling any further.

I think that's VERY true

I no longer use FB as I used to

For me it's morphed into an information and selling entity 🙂

ShiftySquirrel · 13/10/2024 08:16

I tend to look at group updates.

Occasionally friend updates reach me but I think the algorithms don't show me most.

I CBA to have any more SM. I tried Snap which was funny for the filters but I just didn't get it really.

Oh yes. I keep getting this, and way too many ads.

I think Facebook has shot itself in the foot by doing this. I have disabled it on my phone. Sadly, I can't uninstall it.

I still find it useful for local events I would otherwise not know about.

redtrain123 · 13/10/2024 08:25

People do use it alot less than previously. In the past, you’d get a ‘look at my lovely roast dinner I cooked’ post - I now get fewer of those type of posts.

However, I do use it for keeping up with friends from uni, local info, etc and other groups.

Yes, that’s annoying. Does anyone know how to stop these happening?

ExquisiteIyDecorated · 13/10/2024 08:30

The other problem with the random groups popping up is that ones I was in and were relatively niche now get swamped by 1000s of newcomers and the people you'd seen posting regularly and got to know a bit disappear plus you get dozens of posts a day instead of just one or two.

My 66 year old auntie spent ages telling me about a man called Mick who had recently died, his son Paul who I don't know from Adam and his mum Sandra and how many people had liked the post about Mick and what they'd said. She literally reeled them off "Joe Bloggs said rest in peace Mick and put a heart" and did this 44 more times.

Then it's telling us all what her friend Diane is up to, or endless clips of kids singing, Gogglebox or Britain's Got Talent both shows I don't like or watch.

She never goes anywhere in real life.

Wouldn't you just use WhatsApp for that?

WhatsApp has uneven take up across age groups and countries. It’s barely used in Australia where iMessage and Facebook Messenger take its place. Also less used by younger Brits generally.

MeMyCatsAndI · 13/10/2024 08:52

I never see friends posts in a feed, I had to search for friends to see their updates. That said, it was all very mundane and boring. either drama he said/she said posts or just brag posts.

I deleted Facebook a while ago, I feel much better for it not being bombarded by random ads every 5 seconds. I use that next door neighbour app for events in my community now.
And anyone I want to keep up to date with I just WhatsApp.

MeMyCatsAndI · 13/10/2024 08:54

Skibideetoilet · 12/10/2024 19:54

I’d love a MySpace.com resurrection personally 🤣

Now those were the days of social media being truly elite! 😂

Vhp83 · 13/10/2024 08:55

Far too many adverts now so even if people do post it gets lost. I tend to just use it for groups and market place.

Porridgeislife · 13/10/2024 08:57

For everyone moaning about the ads on Facebook: would you otherwise pay to use the service? If not, Meta has to make money off the products it creates and maintains so that’s the price of using it.

I don’t agree with everything Meta does - eg Marketplace is deliberately difficult to search to make sure you look at more ads - but ultimately ads/suggested friends/suggested groups are the digital equivalent of Sainsbury’s highlighting a certain jarred sauce/yoghurt/wine to you in store.

Kierparma · 13/10/2024 08:59

I only use it for the local FB group and a couple of interiors groups that I follow. Even if my friends do post they get swamped by recommendations that I'm not interested in. I justed check my profile, I posted in July this year but that was the first time in 2 years.

This is exactly what I'm finding regards whatsapp

Younger friends and overseas friends don't use whatsapp !

I just looked up some of the people on my FB, and they have been posting... but my feed is so full of ads, sponsored content, and the public posts of people I don't even follow, that they just don't show up.

Same. I want to see what my friends are up to, not all the other crap.

SweetSakura · 13/10/2024 09:08

I find it useful for groups for my rare condition and I am also on it for groups related to hobbies.

I wish people would post more because I like seeing their updates and it's a nice way to stay in touch with people when life is busy

Ednoreilojal · 13/10/2024 09:11

I still post but its mostly for the benefit of the grandparents. I miss the days when everybody posted what they and their kids were up to. I actually am interested to see their kids growing up, and their holiday pics, especially the people who live far away or I don't see often. I don't even mind seeing their dinner or random musings on books or films.

LimeSqueezy · 13/10/2024 09:12

I only use FB for groups. I will cross-post big life updates, like a new baby, from Instagram but that's it.

MidnightBlossom · 13/10/2024 09:12

I've just binned it off. I only used it for a couple of groups I was on. My feed was mostly AI drivel, adverts and sponsored content.

The nail in the coffin was Meta's gen AI plan - the object link didn't work. De-regged and I don't miss it. I don't use X, Insta, TikTok etc. The closest I get to social media now is being on here.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/10/2024 09:16

I never did use it much, but now it’s virtually only for one closed craft group. A very few people I know do post almost daily, though.

Cynic17 · 13/10/2024 09:21

I have never used Facebook, but my impression is that it's over 70s (?) people only who bother with it.

Over 40s I would say.
