Less people using and posting on Facebook or just my friend list? I ?

gone so quiet now. After pandemics it seems less and less people are using it or just not anymore. I've asked a couple of friends and they say it's just boring now.

OP posts:

I use it for some craft groups, specific interest groups, local information groups, local history groups and groups for photos of my local area. I've never used it to correspond with or keep tabs on friends. I thought all the people who lived their lives through Facebook had swapped to Instagram.

Lovethatforyouhun · 12/10/2024 19:02

I’m middle aged and hardly any of my peers use it anymore. My parents generation do though, especially those huge avatars lol its def had its day.

camelfinger · 12/10/2024 19:05

A few actual people popped up to announce that they were at the Taylor Swift shows, and some people noted that they had managed to get Oasis tickets. But other than that it’s generally local groups moaning about traffic and asking about helicopters.

LizTruss · 12/10/2024 19:08

I know exactly what you mean.
It's just not the same now.
Yes, those were my salad days.

halava · 12/10/2024 19:08

I know I could find out somehow, but what's the difference between FB and Instagram please?

I just can't do influencers and all that jazz, and I only use FB (using a pen name) for membership of a few relevant groups that are of great benefit to me. I don't have "friends", don't have pics and my profile pic is a mountain scene.

I have a soft spot for the videos of police webcams from America showing mad as frogs drunk drivers getting arrested. Makes me feel I'm normal after all!

Judellie · 12/10/2024 19:09

I use Facebook Messenger.
I sometimes look at some facebook groups I'm in.
I used to enter facebook competitions but if I try that I either straightaway get a scammer telling me I've won complete with some dodgy link (usually put really obviously under the closing date in a week's time), or I get random posts from creepy men that need blocking.
So don't enter comps any more on facebook.
Don't like or understand Intagram either. Never looked into Snapchat or TikTok tho DD (17) has snapchat.

RowdyTiel · 12/10/2024 19:09

I hate Facebook, I shut mine down a few years ago.

I use it purely for groups and that's it

This. I use it a lot for groups - local info or related to my industry. Only some of my actual friends still post stuff.

reluctantbrit · 12/10/2024 19:11

I do the odd post as I have friends/family not locally or not who I talk a lot to. So it's a way to stay in touch.

I defintitely see friends using it a lot less for the last several months/two years. I actually think the last heyday was during the first lockdown when we all shared pictures of our WFH set up, baking experiments and moaned about the queues at the supermarket.

Otherwise I use it mainly for groups. Despite several attempts, there is no real alternative to interacting/starting discussions with others. Discord is confusing, proper website forums do cost a lot of money so are also covered in advertisement and need a very diligent host to manage it properly.

BanksysSprayCan · 12/10/2024 19:13

It was a good platform in the beginning when the algorithm simply showed you all of your friend’s posts in order of posting.

Bodeganights · 12/10/2024 19:14

Once it was used by companies for advertising I lost interest. I check it once a week now for births/birthdays and weddings and deaths aka hatch, match, despatch.

I did say that once it was full of adverts, people would move on, itll be the same with insta and the rest.
Then another social media will erupt and same will happen again.

BritinDelco · 12/10/2024 19:23

Used to be quite active but now barely use it. I see very few friends posts and tons of ads, suggestions that have no relevance most of the time.

DH and a few of his friends don’t do SM at all, group pictures with smiley faces over them etc. which does rather spoil the fun

WASZPy · 12/10/2024 19:23

My Facebook looks like the last days of Woolworths. Just random, jaded tat littered around.

TheDandyLion · 12/10/2024 19:28

Bloody awful platform. Can't see anything but adverts and short style videos of shit and can barely see any of my friends stuff so I don't bother anymore.

MermaidEyes · 12/10/2024 19:33

Justpeachy88 · 12/10/2024 18:39

Yeah, I believe Instagram has taken over from Facebook now as the popular site. I don’t like Instagram though but does seem that Facebook is dying out slowly.

I prefer Instagram tbh. Have friends on there and I actually see their posts, also follow a lot of celebrities or just random interesting people/groups. Instagram is the go to site for anyone famous to update on, unlike facebook.

Somehowgirl · 12/10/2024 19:37

I despise Facebook but it is useful for community stuff in my area. It's changed so much and is utterly unusable now. Just full of ads, miscellaneous bullshit, and weird AI images. It's almost like it's become a wasteland of the dregs of the internet.

They could fix it and make it what people want to actually use. A way to link with friends and family, use community groups, and Facebook marketplace. If that was it people would like it. In its current form of AI images being commented on by bots, it will die a death in a few years.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 12/10/2024 19:39

I had a big rethink about my social media use a few years back. I decided I no longer wanted to share much of my personal life, particularly regarding my children. I can't share things about work. And no one needs my mindless witterings on books or telly or the weather.

So I basically keep my facebook account for groups, particularly one local one which tells me which part of town I need to go and collect my ridiculously wandersome cat from this week.

Perfect summation

Healingsfall · 12/10/2024 19:44

Surely Facebook had its day years ago. The weirdest thing I find is people who have public profiles. So they update etc which is fine, but anyone who's not their "friend " can see their posts/photos/kids, quite literally everything they've done/posted on fb for the past 15 years. Really odd

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 12/10/2024 19:46

I've migrated to Instagram. But also I feel a lot more private and protective of my life lately.

Yeah, that seems dodgy to me.
Mine is locked down and private. I have been accused of being a troll account in some groups because I "don't have pics of family", as one twat said. The fact he was even looking at my profile means he was digging for dirt.

BrieHugger · 12/10/2024 19:49

Just click on the bottom right menu > feeds > friends, then it only shows stuff your mates have posted.

abracadabra1980 · 12/10/2024 19:51

I absolutely cringe at adults over the age of about 30, who have a need to seek attention constantly. Facebook groups are useful, the general use by the population of the universe, I hope, has had its day.

Skibideetoilet · 12/10/2024 19:53

It only seems to be my older relatives (parents, grandparents) who post regularly. People my age (30ish) seem to favour Instagram if they use social media but still occasionally use FB. All the teens I know post regularly to Snapchat and don’t even have FB accounts.
