Give me your best recommendations for a weekend city break for a middle aged couple. We’ve done and loved York, Edinburgh and Bath.

Have you been to Chester? Great place for a weekend - walk the walls, boat trip, the cathedral, sick to death museum, all the Roman bits.
Loads of places to eat and drink - the new market is great and loads of independent places to eat alongside the chains

I second Chester but what about Salisbury or Canterbury?

redmapleleaves1 · 12/10/2024 16:36

Cambridge. Belfast.

HuaShan · 12/10/2024 16:38

Liverpool? Oxford?

Yes, we were quite pleasantly surprised by Chester. It's really lovely and has a nice energy for a smallish town.

Also had a nice weekend in Liverpool but when we tried to return a few years later we couldn't find a hotel for under £200 a night so didn't bother.

mitogoshigg · 12/10/2024 16:46

Liverpool, great place especially if you like music. Was £79 a night when I went a couple of years back right on the river

Whats middle aged these days?

From that list you like boring old places rather than modern cities so I'd go for Durham as it's very picturesque. Its small but plenty going on and nearby.

Boring old places 😂 The whole of the Uk is old, doesn’t make it boring!

I wouldn’t describe any of those cities OP has mentioned as boring, York is to date my most favourite city I have visited!

MumChp · 12/10/2024 16:53

Coventry

GMH1974 · 12/10/2024 16:54

Lincoln was nice when I went in July if you don't mind the appropriately named Steep Hill.

Belfast

All great cities to explore and have a good feel to them

cheapskatemum · 12/10/2024 16:58

No one has mentioned Brighton yet. It's great for a fun-filled weekend. I would recommend booking an AirB&B if you're finding hotels too expensive. Enjoy!

York is old and boring. Ditto Durham, Edinburgh and Bath.

Places like Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield have a lot more going on as you can tell from their contributions to music and culture, acting etc. You cant deny Durham is in the same vein as those other places.

London, stay in Soho. I adore Soho, by a freak chance of history it is more or less still 18th century in architecture.
So many unusual shops and although quite a lot of the grime and crime has gone it is still a bit different.
And lots of theatres in walking distance you could book a lovely evening show, and it's not even far to the South Bank if you wanted the National Theatre , which as someone not in the first flush of youth I really like for the number of toilets and the unobstructed views from comfortable seats.
St Martins in the Fields does brilliant music performances atmospheric as anything, candle lit and slightly otherworldly.
Soho go to Soho.

Boring to you maybe. Not to everyone! How rude!

I have never been to Durham so can’t comment.

Liverpool is my favourite UK city so I agree with you in that aspect, but York is a close 2nd for me. We had the best weekend exploring and partying there! (maybe you are the problem? I personally can have fun and not be boring wherever I go?)
