Give me your best recommendations for a weekend city break for a middle aged couple. We’ve done and loved York, Edinburgh and Bath.

Glasgow is a cool city. I love it there. Lots to do, great for shopping, lovely restaurants/bars, cool street art, museums, art galleries and the Botanical gardens are nice.

Also not quite a city but I recently went to Whitby for a long weekend and really enjoyed it. Plenty to do, lots of nice restaurants/bars. They have a steam train that runs regularly and it’s such a lovely day out.

Margate, again not a city but pretty cool. Some fabulous restaurants, beach walks, art gallery. It’s a bit like going back to the 80s, it’s such a retro old school place, loads of graffiti and amusements. Plenty to do.

Liverpool is fantastic loads to see and do for all budgets, plenty of unique stuff too

Glasgow, various neighbourhoods making up the city all different. Plenty to explore, easy underground transport. Parks, museums, river, coffee/cafe culture.

Newcastle, including the quayside and a short trip to the coast.

Leeds, Newcastle or Whiby.

Elderflower14 · 21/05/2025 16:36

Liverpool, Lincoln, Oxford..

Iwasjustasking · 21/05/2025 17:19

No one has mentioned Birmingham, loads of things going on and to see and do!

Cynic17 · 21/05/2025 17:24

Liverpool, but go midweek.
If it has to be a weekend, avoid the football season because hotels are £££ and book up quickly.

Not cities, but enjoyed short breaks in Malvern, Leamington Spa and Buxton.

Can you recommend some things to do there with a teen DD please, that are not centred around football or The Beatles? We are doing a day trip there this summer as we are holidaying nearby. Probably also going to do a day trip to Chester and maybe a day at Chester Zoo too.

We went up the top of the Protestant Cathedral and on the Ferry Cross the Mersey. (in addition to football stuff)

Various museums including the world museum which also has a planetarium (probably best to book at busy times)
Unfortunately the maritime museum at the Albert Dock is closed at the moment but it's definitely still worth a wander round the docks themselves. Some lovely food places and independent shops there.
There's also the Museum of Liverpool near the docks and it's always worth walking past the Three Graces on the waterfront. You can get tours of the Liverpool Building too and go up the towers.
The cathedrals - you can go up the tower of the Anglian cathedral and get get views across the city
Quirky quarter on Duke St near the cathedral is a fun activity depending on the age of teen)
There's various indoor golf and tenpin bowling places within the city centre
You could take a ferry across the Mersey or get the train out to Waterloo (15mins) and walk to the beach to see Anthony Gormleys another place - the iron men on the beach

Liverpool, has loads to see and do without the Football and Beatles ( Other Liverpool Bands are available)
Several beaches. Crosby, Southport, New Brighton, Formby etc.
The speed boat trip around the docks is fantastic and if your up for it after the trip they take you to a section of dock that has no speed limit, didn't stop grinning for days!

Williamson tunnels.
Museum's, just check what's open, Smuggling section in the Maritime is great
Baltic market, great for odd things and food
Great Homer street market, just a traditional market but bargains to be had.
And all the usual stuff in the city.
Bold street the one that ends up to the Bombed out Church is good for food.
Lark Lane a short ride out of the city is also a good food location.
The Train will take you to Chester or Southport too.
Knowsley Safari Park is just outside Liverpool 20-25 minutes drive

Many Liverpool buildings are used in films, Peaky Blinders etc.
All depends on what you like doing and want to see.
Chester is nice for a Day trip Marmalade Cafe just near the walls is nice.
