Give me your best recommendations for a weekend city break for a middle aged couple. We’ve done and loved York, Edinburgh and Bath.

And having been to Manchester many times, I find it so boring!

whiteroseredrose · 12/10/2024 17:06

Oxford is lovely for a weekend. Pretty buildings, a few free museums and the colleges to have a peep into.

We have had nice weekends in Shrewsbury and Hay on Wye. Both mainly walking though.

LegoHouse274 · 12/10/2024 17:07

Liverpool

Doyouthinktheyknow · 12/10/2024 17:09

Love Oxford and Bristol.

I would also throw in Margate and Broadstairs for a little bit of coastal loveliness.

Paisleydad · 12/10/2024 19:13

Leeds. Beautiful old arcades. Fabulous market. The old corn exchange building.

Not Stevenage.

Pureshores499 · 12/10/2024 19:25

We love Edinburgh and Bath too! We also really loved Bristol and Canterbury. Llandudno is lovely too

Pureshores499 · 12/10/2024 19:27

Forgot to say, as others have said, Chester is also lovely. Very oldy worldy and lovely shops and restaurants.

VioletCharlotte · 12/10/2024 19:33

I went to Cardiff last weekend, it's very nice of you want shops, bars and restaurants. My favourite cities are York or Edinburgh.

Words · 12/10/2024 19:33

Oxford
Bristol.

Not Leeds! The arcades and the corn market and the Metropole are the sum total of interesting architecture pretty much.

Words · 12/10/2024 19:34

Edinburgh, yes.
Or somewhere like Cheltenham?

York is old and boring. Ditto Durham, Edinburgh and Bath.

Places like Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield have a lot more going on as you can tell from their contributions to music and culture, acting etc. You cant deny Durham is in the same vein as those other places.

Edinburgh has never contributed to music, culture or acting? Really?

Thanks for some great ideas. Definitely thinking Chester or Cambridge in the first instance but lots of others to look at as well!

been to and enjoyed for 2-4 nights breaks

edinburgh (not during the festival unless it’s why you want to visit)
york
newcaatle
Durham
london

been to but and enjoyed visiting but didn’t stay for the whole trip so I’m putting them in a separate section
perth
dundee
stirling

this summer though we stayed In Harrogate instead of York. It was half the price for hotels and it had a much more open less busy vibe than York and is much smaller so it was nice to have a wander but it made a great base to visit other places (which was more complicated than when we stayed in York)we had a day trip to York but we also we had a lovely day in knaresbourough which I’d highly recommend. Both were less than half an hour by bus or train from Harrogate.

there will be others but Iv had half a bottle of red so can’t be arsed to try to remember more sorry 😳

IcyLilacZebra · 13/10/2024 02:35

Oxford - Liverpool - London

avignon1234 · 13/10/2024 03:09

Chester (great but can be rather lively at night, avoid race days)
Oxford
Cambridge
Lichfield (small but old town feel)
Newcastle is fine but I am from there, and it is a big city, but sometimes has a little city-feel. Durham is OK but very studenty this time of year, as are many places, inc Leeds.
Liverpool (same issue to a degree)
Harrogate is OK-ish, better for the surrounding areas
I am not with Manchester, I am sure it has it's charms? I am struggling to see them. Every time I go I like it less and less. Sorry, wish I could report better and I have given it a few tries.

grafittiartist · 13/10/2024 06:43

Stirling
Dundee

If you go to Cambridge I really recommend Hotel Du Vin, on Trumpington Road, its so near the gorgeous Fitzwilliam Museum and it does good breakfast.

Coventry

I don't think I've ever seen Cov suggested as a citybreak location on MM before! What would you do for a whole weekend...? A mooch around the Cathedral and maybe the Herbert museum, a visit to Fargo Village and a bite to eat, but then what? Everything else I'd do in the area is definitely outside of the city itself!

It's definitely not somewhere I'd go as a base for a weekend break (I've lived in CV postcodes for nearly 30 years).

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/10/2024 13:50

As a PP said avoid race days in Chester but I think they are all finished now. Great atmosphere but so so busy!

At night I prefer the upper Northgate Street area as it's away from the main pub/clubs. Great theatre and new Picturehouse.

Have stayed in the Leonardo a couple of times, it's new and quite cheap.

Midlifecrisisxamillion · 13/10/2024 14:30

Is Chester relatively dog friendly?

ivykaty44 · 13/10/2024 14:32

Warwick, Stratford, Kenilworth & Leamington Spa

they are all together, 2 castles, one birthplace and a spa town

TurquoiseBear · 13/10/2024 14:41

Stratford-upon-Avon
Had a weekend away there recently, and it was great.

Piggywaspushed · 13/10/2024 14:44

Glasgow!

Is Chester relatively dog friendly?

Yes. The new food market allows dogs as do several eating places. Great walks through the park and down the river too
