House move discoveries

Awkward title 😳 but what I mean is have you come across any exciting things that have been left behind by previous owners of your house?

We've only found a couple of tea towels that have fallen down the back of the kitchen drawers and some (very handy!) work tools that were left in the garage.

A wedding dress in a black bien bag in the loft.

Not exciting but they left behind several bags of rubbish, a garden roller, a drawer full of crap, a cupboard full of crap and a loo cistern with a bag of drugs in it. They also took stuff they said they'd leave and plenty of stuff they were supposed to take.

Bit unusual but moved into a house where the owners had died in a car accident in their 40s.

The house was cleared by a house clearance team as family lived abroad.

My dad went up into the loft and found it hadn't been emptied. The loft hatch was in an usual place (inside built in wardrobes) and we presumed they'd just missed it.

It wasn't full of junk though. It had the usual Christmas decorations and seasonal stuff and then there were boxes of girls clothes. One box per age range. From newborn to 6 years. Then no more. Also boxes of toys that stopped at same sort of age.

Turns out the family had a daughter who had died in an accident aged 6.
This was 25 years ago and the child had died around 5 years before we had moved in.

Oh that one got me. Poor little girl and the whole family.

We found a loo door from the local pub semi-hidden in the garden bushes.

Also every light bulb was either red or green

The garage was stuffed full of newspapers.

Funnily enough, they didn't want any of it back

Were they running a grow-op or a Santa’s grotto? 😂

The only things we found were all the stuff they tried to sell us (random garden decorations, a gate, etc) at ridiculous prices. We said, nope, too much money for us. They left them anyway.

Also they left us a massive oriental rug in the lounge. It’s a huge room and the rug is unusually large. They were downsizing and said it wouldn’t fit in their new place so they’d leave it for us. It was probably a year of living here before we looked under the rug and realised the reason they left it was because the floor underneath was unfinished. 😂 They’d only done around the edges and under the rug is bare concrete! We’ve been here 3 years now. Still haven’t moved the rug or finished the floor.

Bottle of whiskey definitely deliberately hidden under the kickboards in the utility room.

Very very awkward as we actually knew the people we were buying off as kids went to same school!

Not me but….

Friends of my parents found £30k in used £20 notes in a carrier bag. This was about 20 years ago now and the notes were still current. They kept quiet, I think it had been a house clearance, and left it a year but no one came to claim it. They used it like a cash point taking cash out when then needed it.

A friend found a large portrait of a man in the loft. The painting is bigger than the lift hatch.

This is it

That’s lovely.

The loft was full of bags of stuff including a bridesmaid dress and childhood toys. We knew the couple had split on non-amicable terms and she didn’t want her ex to know where she now lived. Quite sad to throw it all out.

The house also had some furniture. The table and chairs we kept for twenty years.

In other cupboards were some kitchen stuff. Still have one glass bowl which I still use.
