One smelly armpit - help me!

I have one smelly armpit. It smells like onions. I've tried washing with bar soap, twice per shower, stronger deodorants. My t-shirts all smell in one armpit and even after soaking them in vinegar they still smell after they are washed and dried. Wise mumsnetters please help me.

Following with interest!

I sniffed my armpit as I was getting out the shower and it smelled stale and of used deodorant

Is it stress? Both mine sweat when I’m hot, but just the right one when I’m a bit anxious.

My tops always smell on one side if I’ve been giving a presentation or something.

I’ve got one smelly armpit too. I’ve heard of Botox being used for sweating, but perhaps it’s to stop the wetness as opposed to the odour? Mine isn’t wet. Just stinky.

Gymmum82 · 11/10/2024 11:46

Mine is the same and I put it down to peri menopause symptoms.
I use Driclor anti perspirant to completely stop sweating which has worked but my tops still smell as the smell won’t wash out

My DH and both DS all smell on one side only .

If this is a new thing though can you do an econsult with your GP

Viviennemary · 11/10/2024 11:47

Tri Driclor deoderant. I think you can buy it. Also dettol laundry in your washing

I have done quite a bit of research on this topic 😃. Might I suggest the following? Switch to a simple solid soap bar, use a flannel so you're really scrubbing off stuff, pat dry and use glycolic acid (the ordinary is cheap as chips), then use either mitchum or sure super ( pink box) roll on.

SunshineSky81 · 11/10/2024 11:54

Is it the side you carry your handbag on? I find one gets hotter so to speak than the other one, as i tend to carry my bag on one side but then fold my arm up so i am holding the strap if that makes sense?

I would second the suggestion of bar Soap, or an anti bac soap bar - wash and apply deodorant at night

Ivymedication · 11/10/2024 11:56

Wash with soap bar, then wipe with surgical spirit.
Also works on really smelly feet.
You can also decant into a spray bottle and spray into stinky shoes or spray onto the armpits of smelly tops before you wash then
The strong smell disappears after a minute or two.

Use a soapy face washer/flannel or exfoliating glove to give your armpits a good scrub under there.

You could try using Sunlight, Velvet(?) or Sard soap to scrub the underarms of the shirts. I use Napisan liquid to soak my shirts to get rid of smelly stress sweat smells. I found that the standard Napisan powder would leave weird bleach-type spots on my shirts but the liquid doesn’t.

Mitchum clinical antiperspirant deodorant.

I had this exact problem, and yes, it smelt of stale onions!!
It started when I broke my shoulder. I couldn't bathe at all for a week as also had broken hip. Then when I could shower it was really hard to lift my arm fully to scrub it. Also I couldn't shave for ages!
The one smelly pit thing went on for about a year. I'd have to wash the offending one twice or three times, sometimes it would still smell after I'd showered!?
I'm not sure what happened but it seemed to die down and now it's just the same stinkiness as the other one! I used a charcoal facial wash on my pits/body and that seems to help.
I do eat quite a lot of onions, but I don't think that's what caused it as I didn't eat any at all when i was in hospital?
Weird!

Shesellsseashellsontheseasure · 22/10/2024 18:49

Thanks for the help, sorry it took so long to reply. I've been scrubbing the offending pit with Dettol soap and a flannel and I've swapped deodorant for the past 2 days and no stink! Even my smells t-shirts don't smell after a good soak in vinegar pre wash.
