Anyone seen this bank detail thing with Spanish hotels

It was meant to come in from October 1st but had been delayed until December 1st. When checking in now you have to also give your bank details etc instead of just passport details.
The Spanish goverment say it's so they know who is in the country, but they know that anyway with our passports.

How do people feel about this ?
Why do they need this extra data? We're not supposed to give our bank details out usually are we so why do the Spanish government now want them ? It seems like a big privacy invasion to me !

What’s your source?

motormouth99 · 11/10/2024 15:06

I have heard about this. I don't like the idea of it, I don't really know too much about it. Hopefully someone else will be along soon who does know more about it

Hotels will be required to ask for and communicate to the police register bank details if you pay via transfer, if not card details if you pay by card etc. It is opposed by the Hotel services associations and they are prepared to go to court over it, so we´ll see if it ever comes into force. The new law was approved it 2021 and it still isn´t enforced. You may see December come and go and nothing happen.
Edited to add not only hotels, also airbnb hosts and clients, car rental companies, travel agencies and a few others who strenously oppose the measure as it puts huge bureaucratic strain on them, pisses off their clients and is impossible for small companies to keep up with. The Government says it is part of measures to fight organised crime and terrorism. Spain has been now for several years on level 4 terror alert.

So does this mean when you get to a hotel to check in whilst handing over your passport (which is fine I don't mind that) you also have to give your bank details ? Because that's what I am not happy about, just do not see why they need anyones bank details

Hotels usually swipe a credit or bank card when you check in. I don’t see that it’s any different. What do you think they can do with your account details?

No. As I understand it, they have to record your payment method, the name on the account, date of the payment and expiry date (if paying by card).

Can honestly say that I've never had to swipe my card when checking into a hotel abroad ! And no idea but why should I have to give my bank details ? If I pay tourist tax or a deposit I use cash. It's my personal data, my passport proves who I am that should be enough surely ?

The hotel lets you check in with cash? What about a security deposit?

I agree. If you give your debit card details those are your bank account details. Your account info is on the card.

Apparently will be required to fill in a form at the airport. You'll be required to provide bank account details, credit card details, driving license details, home address and phone number amongst other things.
This information will be passed to the police. No idea how long the information will be kept.

On top of that if asked will have to provide proof of funding for your stay....£94 per night I think it is. So will have to show cash, or proof of having funds by bank statement or credit card statement.

Seriously ?? I thought proving funds was only if you planned to stay longer than 90 days ? So not a tourist visa

We always book a package so it's all paid for when booking the holiday. We have never had to swipe our cards ! We only did that once and it was for pool towels deposit in menorca

Looks like it will be kept for three years from a quick google

I thought you were already supposed to be asked to prove you have a certain amount of funding for your stay - not that I've ever been asked .

I'm envisaging some very long queues at airports - and will people be sent home if they don't have this info ? Is it everyone in a party or just one person ?

NannyGythaOgg · 11/10/2024 21:01

Your 'bank details' are exactly what was on cheques when we used them.
Your bank, account number and sort code was printed on every single cheque.

No one can do anything with those details alone

Nasyan · 11/10/2024 21:08

I would probably just have a separate bank account that I would use for the holiday, I wouldn't hand over my main bank details alongside all the other details they want,

ohtowinthelottery · 11/10/2024 21:30

I opened an online bank account to get a fee free bank card for use abroad.I top the account up from my main bank account as and when needed. There's no salary going into it. They can have that account detail if they want anything. Any payments I make to hotels abroad are paid on credit card not connected directly to any bank account. It seems like a totally pointless request for info.

Not from what I read no, they can ask anyone for proof of funds.

Oh I wasn't aware of that already being in place, I thought that was new too.

Not sure what the penalties will be for not giving details, probably refused entry.
Seen a few online sites saying it's been confirmed from 2nd December but not seen anything official yet.

CeeJay81 · 11/10/2024 22:13

Had no idea about this. We are going to Tenerife in December. I've opened a Monzo account instead of taking cash, so I'll use that but between this and having to have your biometrics taken. It's not going to be a very relaxing start to the holiday.
