Anyone seen this bank detail thing with Spanish hotels

cattywat · 11/10/2024 11:32

It was meant to come in from October 1st but had been delayed until December 1st. When checking in now you have to also give your bank details etc instead of just passport details.
The Spanish goverment say it's so they know who is in the country, but they know that anyway with our passports.

How do people feel about this ?
Why do they need this extra data? We're not supposed to give our bank details out usually are we so why do the Spanish government now want them ? It seems like a big privacy invasion to me !

It seems to be other countries as well that will have to do this so nothing to do with us being out of the EU, I did wonder if it was an EU thing

MrsCarson · 11/10/2024 23:12

I used to check in with a CC and then pay cash at the end of the stay, but that was in the US. CC was for a security deposit and they used to put a hold on the card for $100 it would come off after check out, or a day later or so every time.
It sounds similar. I'd just use a CC on check in.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 11/10/2024 23:23

I read about this. The Spanish hoteliers are not happy about it hence the delay.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 11/10/2024 23:24

I will have to keep my eyes open . We're going to Spain at the end of December - I'm sure I'm not the only one . This is reminiscent of all the changing travel rules in the pandemic !

cattywat · 12/10/2024 06:34

Yep I'm away too over Christmas, the airport is already a stressful event so this is something else to look forward too 😆

This might assist people. I can’t guarantee its accuracy but it is a travel journal and appears to be well written.

Apologies this link is to the Daily Mail

Nasyan · 12/10/2024 07:26

A lot of people including us use a credit card that gets points or cash back to pay for the holiday and a different card for spending there that doesn't have charges, is it the account you pay the holiday with they want or the spending money account or a bank current account which is not used at all for the holiday but is a proper bank account.

Freshersfluforyou · 12/10/2024 07:31

Sadly this stuff is becoming increasingly necessary because so many dodgy fuckers simply refuse to pay their taxes /operate legally and insist on paying loads of stuff in cash to launder a bit of profit.

Freshersfluforyou · 12/10/2024 07:36

Instead of blaming governments and authorities, how about play your part. When your cleaner/plumber says cash only please say fucking no!!

Timeforaglassofwine · 12/10/2024 07:37

The thing is with bank details, they can't use them for withdrawing money, only for paying money in. As a business every Tom Dick and Harry knows my sort code and account number. They can't do anything with it unless they need to pay me. I don't think it's a bad idea though to have a second account when travelling.

Bewareofthisonetoo · 12/10/2024 07:42

cattywat · 11/10/2024 20:53

I will just make a random bank account and keep a quid in it especially for this

Great Idea😁
ThinkI will too and only ever transfer in enough money for the ‘proof’ needed by the hotel.
And guess what that’s what all those terrorisrs who stay in ABnBs will do too 😂😂

But many don't use their bank account for travelling and I don't think credit cards have sort codes so would they want the account details of a bank you aren't using for the holiday

Had no idea about this. We are going to Tenerife in December. I've opened a Monzo account instead of taking cash, so I'll use that but between this and having to have your biometrics taken. It's not going to be a very relaxing start to the holiday.

(Biometric thing has been postponed again -was due to be Nov 10th - day I am travelling…)
I was thinking of going up Tenerife in Feb but will definitely give Spain a swerve if that’s the case because of the delays it will cause,

cakeorwine · 12/10/2024 09:24

If you give them a fake sort code and account number, how are the police going to know?

Will they automate it to verify people's details?
It sounds like a GDPR nightmare.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/10/2024 11:17

Those links are referring to your accommodation owner taking details rather than being required to fill in forms at the airport which one poster suggested. Car hire firms already hold your card details in case of any ongoing issues and whereas we normally give security deposits at accommodation in cash, I think that hotels often hold your card details anyway. I get that sharing these with police is a new thing. So it's about whether as a tourist you feel comfortable with this - but also the extra work for the businesses concerned.

I am wondering if there's likely to be a problem with us going with no return ticket booked.

I flew to Tenerife on 1st October and we had to place a finger on a reader at passport control. The queues were really quite bad

boomerangguy · 03/12/2024 10:23

I am going in January and am opposed to this on a matter of principle. I have read that these rules could be a breach of civil liberties and breach data protection laws. I understand further restrictions are due EU wide. This will be my last trip to Europe for vacation particularly Spain. I am expecting legal action against the Spanish government. Are there any lawyers who have looked into this?

Chrislad · 06/12/2024 14:16

All hotels in Spain have been instructed by law to ask for 40 pieces of information from any guest whether you are a visiting tourist from another country or a Spanish citizen. Not surprisingly, this has caused much concern from both the travel industry and Spanish citizens. But it looks like there is nothing that can be done, Spain is going down this dictatorship road and all the politicians appear to be powerless or spineless to intervene. Policies like this are just the tip of the iceberg for what's to come for the Spanish people. I've lived in Spain for 24 years, but I am sure glad that I have kept my UK passport.

EmmerdaleFan78 · 06/12/2024 14:54

I don’t like the idea of that but I can’t see it coming in tbh. On the off chance it ever did, I probably wouldn’t go back, I’ve been approx 5 times so plenty more of the world to see. Could potentially kill tourism off.

Dictatorship? 😂

You need to give your name, address, id and payment details. If you're travelling with children then you have to explain your relationship to them. Most of this is standard information that you'll have given when you booked.

It's hardly the Spanish inquisition!

cakeorwine · 06/12/2024 17:34

These are the requirements - I would argue that the data collected may not be kept securely by the person collecting them - and there's a risk of Identity theft - copies of passports, addresses etc

  1. First name
  2. First surname
  3. Second surname (if applies)
  4. Gender
  5. ID document number
  6. Document reference number
  7. Type of document (DNI, passport, TIE)
  8. Nationality
  9. Date of birth
10. – Full address (Place of usual residence) 11. – City (Place of usual residence) 12. – Country (Place of usual residence) 13. Landline phone number 14. Mobile phone number 15. Email address 16. Number of travelers 17. Relationship between travelers (if any are minors)

The rules and data requirements are here

BOE-A-2021-17461 Royal Decree 933/2021, of 26 October, establishing the documentary registration and information obligations of natural or legal persons who carry out accommodation and motor vehicle rental activities.

soupfiend · 06/12/2024 17:44

Who is gathering the information, is it at the airport?

We dont have a landline number

But that is only 17 items and doesnt identify the need for cash for your stay, is that a requirement?

LauraNorda · 06/12/2024 17:55

Hassling holidaymakers for their private financial and biometric details, supposedly for 'terrorism' and 'so we know who's in the country'. Yet anyone can rock up in an inflatable from anywhere and they are just let in. The mind boggles.
