Sodastreams - are they good?

Does anyone have or use a sodastream? I like the idea of it, reducing plastic bottles but are they actually any good? Do the Pepsi, 7up flavours actually taste similar to the originals?

I've had one for about 18 months. We use it a lot. I use it mainly for plain fizzy water but also for adding to cordials like Bottle Green to make a slightly fancier drink!
DD1 and 2 like the Pepsi flavouring, they say its quite similar, I don't like Pepsi so cant really tell.
Each gas bottle lasts us for a few months then we take it back to Argos, they refund £10 when you buy a new one so it costs £15 each time I think. We always have a spare one though so once one finishes we've a new one to put in and don't have to wait to get more fizz!

I find their flavours quite artificial but it works great for sparkling water - adding flavours of your own!

or makes amazing cocktails…..

GrumpyPanda · 10/10/2024 22:43

The fizzy water isn't quite fizzy enough for my taste, and where I live now they still sell water in glass bottles. Am told it helps to put the filled bottles in the fridge before carbonation them.

They are awesome, we made our own cava & fizzy red .

We have one but have stopped using it at the moment, we had the gas on subscription but it got a bit too expensive. We use a lot of sparkling water and it was one of our CoL cutbacks as it’s actually cheaper to buy cheap bottled sparking.

I did like it, we will go back to using it though, it didn’t save us any money but I liked the reduced plastic.

I hadn't considered the possibilities of cocktail making.

We've had one for years - because we wanted to stop buying plastic bottles.

But we don't use the syrups. We add to squash/cordial, just as you would with tap water, so can't comment on how similar/different they are to brands like Pepsi, etc. A canister lasts us for ages, so it's definitely cheaper than buying fizzy water each week!

Trampoline · 10/10/2024 22:55

Yes! We tried the official sodastream cordials but didn't like them so just use with squash. However, we mainly use it just for sparkling water with lemon, it's great. You can return your empty gas canisters to Robert Dyas to get something like £10 off a new one. Not tried cocktails, good idea!

SongSungBlues · 10/10/2024 22:59

Yes, we got one to cut down on the number of plastic bottles we were getting through with buying fizzy water. You can make the water as fizzy as you like, doing how many charges you give it. We don’t use the official syrups, just cordials we like.

I have one of these

gets lots of use for sparkling water and fizzy drinks. All good and I find cheaper than bottled water, but probably not quite so fizzy.

I was using a new cartridge every 10-12 days as I like my fizzy ‘sharp’. Too expensive.
I've gone back to tap water as my plastic habit was too high.

Talulahalula · 10/10/2024 23:06

Yes, I have got the e-terra one. I got it to cut down on the excessive number of plastic bottles my sparkling water habit was creating. I don’t think the gas canisters last that long, though, but then I am making 1-2 litres a day and DS is also making juice.

LuisCarol · 10/10/2024 23:06

I drink literally nothing but fizzy soda stream water and wine these days.

Haven't tried fizzy soda stream wine yet, but it's surely a matter of time.

Maviz · 10/10/2024 23:07

It's not fizzy enough. Very disappointing.

Falifornia · 10/10/2024 23:11

Useful for fizzing white wine when you've run out of Prosecco for your Aperol Wine. Just don't fill the bottle too full when not doing plain water!

Yes that was our issue, 3-4 cannisters a month was a lot more than bottled equivalent.
