Disappearances of women and rivers

I am just reading the terrible story about Victoria Taylor and the suggestion she fell into the river Derwent.

There have a been a number of these stories recently. They are all awful. But I can't recall this happening so frequently in the past. Am I wrong? Did this happen and it was less reported? Is it incredibly risky to walk alone by riverbanks, all the more so if you are female? How dangerous is this?

Drowning (and death by suffocation) is famously one of the nicer ways to die.

I thought drowning was known to be a horrible death?

Drawfulofbitz · 22/07/2025 21:29

As a woman, I would not walk along a river or a canal

You have never walked along the Thames in London?!

Drawfulofbitz · 22/07/2025 21:31

People seem to be hell bent on there being a serial killer on social media because ‘no woman would leave their children’. Some do.

I think some before the drama & thrill of a serial killer.

There have been inexplicable cases of dead young men found in bodies of water in various US cities as well since the late 90s. The deaths are highly suspicious, many with drowning not even the actual cause of death.
It's thought by many to be copycat serial killers or perhaps a group of organized killers. It's known as the Smiley Face killer theory. Currently it's happening in Pittsburgh PA.

There have been similar stories in cities in europe with lots of canals. Lucky serial killers if no-one they pushed in ever just swam to the other side and got out

I hadn't read the whole thread and just seen the post from oasis fan. That makes sense.

But basically in my mind if you can swim and your not drunk or on drugs, it's impossible to force yourself to drown no?!

All sorts of factors .Drwoning means fluid fills the lungs. People could be unconscious from the fall (hitting water at great height can kill you alone), could go into shock because of water temp, can hit rocks beneath the surface etc. They could either die of those things, or become unconscious and then drown.

I found this impossible to believe so have looked at the report and it doesnt say that at all

It says that of women who die by accidental drowning the largest number are aged between 50 and 59 but over 80% of those who drown accidentally are men

Which I think most of us would have guessed

Sorry, yes I wasn't very clear. But it isn't a coincidence that most women who 'drown' are between 50 - 59.

NotrialNodeal · 22/07/2025 21:52

Thank you for explaining that makes sense to me @Sidebeforeself .

What do you mean by a coincidence?

Drawfulofbitz · 22/07/2025 21:59

I remember learning at school that sudden immersion into cold water is very dangerous. People go into shock & that is what results in drowning.

Drawfulofbitz · 22/07/2025 22:01

I'm sure fighting it & trying to swim is more likely to cause drowning. If you fall into cold water you need to float first before you try & swim.

CalicoPusscat · 22/07/2025 22:02

I really don't know, if I fell into water by mistake I'd start paddling for my life and discard coat/cardie/jumper.

If it was nefarious intent by a stranger I would do my best to throw a rock at them. If it was concussion then I'd be in trouble.

I feel sorry there wasn't a better outcome for Rachel and her people.

Anotherusername13 · 22/07/2025 22:12

One of the lecturers from my uni fell into a river and drowned on the way home from the pub , it definitely didn't make headline news.
Also another woman drowned in Carlingford in Ireland several years ago. She was on a hen weekend and wandered off from the group.
I also know of a well known agony aunt who committed suicide by going into the sea, she suffered from depression and even wrote a book about it

That hormones can have a devastating effect on women's mental health as they approach the menopause. And I think they choose drowning.

I think this too, it's odd.

Same.. I was discussing this with my sister today..

I remember learning at school that sudden immersion into cold water is very dangerous. People go into shock & that is what results in drowning.

I live near a lake and we get strong swimmers jumping in and drowning because of the cold water shock, even on a hot day the water just below the surface can be extremely cold.
My DS does scuba diving and had to do dives in a quarry to get qualified. It was in the middle of the mega hot weather we had a few years ago and he had to wear a dry suit because the water was still really cold. He went in for a paddle and said he was shocked how hot the weather had been and how cold the water was.

GarlicMetre · 24/07/2025 11:18

Quarry pools are notoriously dangerous, due to the steep sides and extreme cold. There were loads of them in my long-ago childhood, where kids drowned every summer.

Most people who've been resuscitated after drowning say the first lungful of water's really painful but, after that, it feels natural. Some say they didn't feel pain - and it seems children don't, either, hence they rarely struggle if drowning. I'm not sure how accurate someone's memory of such a trauma would be, but I know it's true about children as I've rescued a few. They just sort of floated downwards, no sign of distress at all.

I think about this whenever I see a film where the woman wades out to her watery death! If you knew you could just breathe it in painlessly, it would be quite a peaceful way to go. I do think most 'mysterious' drownings are the result of falling in and getting stuck or losing consciousness, though. If you wanted to murder someone that way, you'd have to knock them out or weigh them down to make sure - so it wouldn't be mysterious.

There was a woman who got milk and stuff from the shops and ended up miles away from her destination n area and was found in a river. Like how is that not suspicious?

Jetecos · 30/08/2025 09:37

This does make sense this happens to me when my shower suddenly turns ice cold. If I was immersed in water. I'd suck in a deep breath from the blow of ice water n drown due to frozen panicked body.

But I still remember that day walking along the canal but got too far from my area. And taking a panic attack this man walked past and I asked him as it was getting dark quickly and my phone was dead if he'd be so kind as to walk me back to an area where there is street lights so I can see the path in the area I knew where I was. He agreed spoke to me about his work saying he was on break and usually walks the canal after a light lunch. Then he staring at the water asked a cold flat question. Can you swim. I said no. I tried to as a child but I drowned once as a child and never was able to learn to swim. ( I was also abused as child n purposely held under water in the bath by adults in the family many a times)
Anyway he stared at the water and then asked more flat and coldly. Can you swim. Like he ignored my answer. I said no. He kept staring at the water. I got freaked out. And realising I recognised where I was now not long after this happened while walked in silence I decided to cut off away from him and down out the canal. He was upset n very forceful about continuing the walk with him up to this wall area. I was like no. This is where I wanted to go. Thank you bye. He still insisted I follow him on. And I ran out of there.
Now hearing all these stories. This being years ago now.
It gives me shudders to think. Could I have been the next victim

You have a very active imagination.

Jetecos · 30/08/2025 09:55

You're a liar mate. I drowned as a child. I fought for my life and took ages fighting to reach the surface. I fought like crazy. Until I got worn out n gave up. I held my breath as long as I could until I started seeing colourful water and imagining it being magic water. God saved me just before I breathed in involuntary as when my body tried to the first time I forced it to stop somehow. But the second time it happened before I reached the surfaces with God's hands around my leg. I breathed in a lot of water. It was like acid fire and burnt everywhere nose throat lungs etc the pain was ereeme I coughed up fluid n vomited up green fluid. And wasn't well afterwards. N have scarring according to doctors to my airwaves. On inhalers most of my life since then. Until I quit those as they made asthma attacks worse. People remember this trauma and kids fight like hell to survive just like any adult. I had to when was attempted kidnapped at school when I was abused By predator
Kids aren't stupid. And they feel pain of drowning too. Maybe have your own experiences before shooting your mouth as if it's facts of about experiences you only heard about but never lived through. Stick To what you actually know personally.

CountryQueen · 30/08/2025 10:33

God pulled your leg? Think you’re the one doing the leg pulling 🤣
