How do I potty train?

Never done it before. DS has been very stubborn and a bit of a speech delay but k think he’s nearing signs of readiness (2y9mo)

What do I do? I tried nothing on waist down and just taking to potty etc when we tried 3 months ago

but Is there any specific way I need to do it? Do I have to stay in? And do I put a nappy on for bed time still?

so train all day then do a nappy for bed time at night

My DS was helped because he was at kindergarten and followed everyone into the bathroom even if he didn't use it. We tried a little at home but it didn't work.

What did work was time. He was nearly 3 with a nappy on and it suddenly dawned on him he was wet (as wet as you can be with a modern nappy). It's about control though I think. From that point on he recognised when he needed to go and would scream murder if a nappy came anywhere near him. He was then clean and dry during the day and at night.

You should be able to tell from your DSs face of he needs to go or if he starts jiggling.

It sounds as if it will be soon but I wouldn't push it.

Ds just one day said I want to wear pants, so I said oh okay but you'll need to use the potty and he started to bar a few accidents.

I think the main thing is waiting until they're ready. My DS is the same age as yours and maybe half his friends are trained and half still in nappies. The HV was clear to me, funnily enough the day before, that rushing them doesn't help and will make it slower.

In more logic way DS wore pants from day 1 as that was what he wanted to do but we were actually going on holiday the next day! We took a carry potty everywhere and had training pants for bed/long car journeys/soft play.

So we’ve had like practices he’s had 2 odd wees on the potty. He tells me he needs to go when he has nothing on but asks for a ‘clean bum’ knowing he’ll do something

when I’ve tried him with just undies he’ll do a wee and get upset ask for a nappy or do a little wee and not tell me :( but again these have just been numerous little tries to get him potty educated

I would leave it for a few weeks. It does sound like he's getting there but he's also getting upset.

If he's still having accidents he isn't recognising the need to go.
